There are a lot of job classes within FFT and perhaps people (like me) who might actually want to play along would like some guidance on their generics. So, do you think you could list out the possible classes for the generics and your thoughts on them? Maybe later, like at the end of Act 2 (which is where I've played to). Spoilers: by the end of Act 2, Thurio and Mercurio still won't be in their final classes. For now we've barely scratched the surface of the more complicated classes, and you probably get the idea by now ('you leave squire immediately, archers are decent, knights are fucking boring, thieves are stealbots, monks are good despite not having hats fsr, chemists are dull but efficient, white magi are dull but efficient, black magi are dull but efficient, mystics have really accurate disable and a bunch of abilities that are not really accurate disable'). We'll get into the more complex classes when we use (like Orator), face (like Summoner) and desperately try and get through the arcane and asinine JP requirements for (like Samurai) them. That does, however, mean I'm writing the full overview now. It just won't be seen for another week and a half! Always prepare your buffers, people. Mage Knight 404
There does seem to be a lot missing with Argath in hindsight; after his abrupt face-heel turn he just kinda laughs gleefully at being made to follow the orders of his highborn idols and spit in the faces of Delita and Mercurio(who still takes everything in stride gods bless). Ah, but it makes him all the more punchable! And who doesn't love a good sockpuppet?
Parrhesia
Update 11In Which the Gauntlhat is Thrown Down Spoiler We're back where we started. Mercurio doesn't answer the Doublegaff. Things Gaffgarion is paid to do: Escort the princess, kill people unnecessarily Things Gaffgarion is not paid to do: Actually guard the princess Presumably he just sort of gets paid by the route? Like hell, it's the princess' problem if she can't keep up. But dude, Gaff, if you get the chance to take a detour, that's more taxi fare. God. Cab better, Gaff. Chuft Oldsman drags himself out, Agrias shakes her head. Chuft Oldsman is supremely unworried about Ovelia now that she's gone. Boom - Mercurio. It's never explained how he falls in with Gaffgarion. I did not cut anything out of that exchange. Gaffgarion, who is the unambiguous leader of Mercurio and the Lad, did not want to go after Ovelia. He decided it was not financially worth it. Finance and a vague secondary tendency towards bloodshed have been the only concerns that he, a mercenary, has displayed. And yet Mercurio's like 'I want to figure out who the dude is' and then Gaffgarion's like, yeah, okay, sure! Why? Welcome to chapter two. Agrias' knights and the Lad all join you - they're generics in FFT but have a minor sidequest in WOTL. We're thrust without warning into a fight in Dorter, a Blue Dot. It's relatively inoffensive here since there's not terribly much else that can be done anyway. This thief has a portrait because he owns. The ruffian gives the most exaggerated turn and shrug, it's great. The ruffian glances over in our direction. I did not predict the location of the textbox correctly. OH WELL oh what a surprise he whistles for its dudes and it's archers and black mages Gaffgarion, who in the prologue (chronologically, right before this) was paid by the head, even if those heads were knights, now considers killing people to be charity. This fight is all about letting Gaffgarion and Agrias flex their muscles while you struggle to find a favourable camera angle. After all this, the surviving archer looses an aimed shot at Mercurio, who is already dead, and Jesus Christ I need to de-equip black magic from Gaffgarion. He's expertly positioned his attack to only get two guys and also to stop Thurio punching anyone. Mercurio gets lucky. Portia's essentially doomed so she may as well redirect the best-compat fireball onto the non-Hat Boy thief. The game constantly tries to wrestle me into This Angle, even Right Now, when I moved Portia There. The fireball, centred on Selkie, somehow does not hit the thief, who is like, twenty centimetres higher. The paladins save the day. Leave it to the professionals, the game tells us, as the level curve ramps up without our input. Thurio's gonna Thur. This is where the camera forces me into for Portia's turn. Black magic has been cast somewhere into the void and I need to figure out where. Hhhhuh. Apparently the thunder rod sometimes calls down thunder after the attack. I guess we're just gonna go storm the whatever-sky castle. But what exposition did we miss? And how can the game cram as much of it as possible down our throats? Margaret of Anjou! Goltanna's the bourgeoisie choice! [missed a screenshot but IIRC it was about how Goltanna's lands are wracked by poverty and famine] But he really sucks at his job! What's Mercurio been up to? Yeah, he's basically just fucking vanished. The Beowulves seem to have given us up for good. Mercurio's done a pretty shitty job of it, though. Hot tip, if you're a fugitive from the Northern Sky, having killed up to six members of the Northern Sky, you probably shouldn't take highly-visible contracts from the Northern Sky. :( Finally, our new compatriots; Awh, Gaff's first name got changed in the localisation (probably for the best). Goffikgarion's a war criminal. He's such a good war criminal that it's given him Satanic powers. FFT seems to use Ser and Lady instead of Sir and Dame. Which annoys me. I'm fine with 'ser' as either a feminine-specific or unisex equivalent to 'sir' ('dame' doesn't quite sound... fightly enough for a setting with female combatants, as basically all fantasies should be, since we aren't just here to copy medieval Europe's shitty attitudes towards gender) but eh. In the meantime? Grind time. KILL COUNTER archers and mages Edited April 5, 2017 by Parrhesia

There are a lot of job classes within FFT and perhaps people (like me) who might actually want to play along would like some guidance on their generics. So, do you think you could list out the possible classes for the generics and your thoughts on them? I can help you with that. Males have higher PA (physical) and females have higher MA (magical), so in most cases, it's better to have casters be mages and females be casters. There are some exceptions to this. Males make better Chemist than females because the only weapons that they use are physical or don't use any stats at all except Faith and weapon power. Females make slightly better thieves on the account that most of the enemies in the game are male so Steal Heart is better used from a female than a male-- it also helps that females cannot have worst compatibility with males so it makes it impossible to ever have your stealing rates plummet as a result of signs. The only exception to the male / female dynamic is Ramza who is actually good at both because he gets male and female bonuses outside of gear. If any of your characters have time that are male, they should always go to Bard Summoner Job Level 4 and Mediator Job Level 4. This class enables them to get Move + 3, the best movement in the game besides Teleport (Time Mage). If you're on the PSP version, you CAN get it with Dark Knight, but I don't think Dark Knight is worth grinding for. Onion Knight is a lousy class and cannot learn much. *Master Onion Knight is okay, but I still find that it's not really worth it. You should always have Gain JP Up / JP Boost equipped until you at least hit the job that you want and from there grab everything else that you need. The main thing I'd say for a Vanilla "good" team would be. 1) Wizard (if it's Ramza use his Squire class) / Sub Samurai skills (female or Ramza). Since Samurai skills scale off of magic, it's a great way to have Ramza fight up close without having to rely on charging, and in Chapter 4, Ramza gets a skill that boosts his magic. It's amazing. 2) Ninja / Sub Monk Skills with Martial Arts as the support ability. Two Swords with Fist is some of the best damage in the game, and the monk skill is very versatile. Plus the Ninja is one of the fastest classes in the game in terms of growths and multipliers which will result in your characters being able to go more frequently (and perhaps get a permanent speed boost depending on long you stay in the class). I'd recommend this be a male at all cost. 3) Geomancer / Sub White Mage - Having two people that are capable of reviving is never a bad idea, and the white mage can have some free AoE attacks when it's not supporting your team. Plus Geomancer has competent MA as well so you can use magic without fear of it being rather lackluster here. 4) Mystic (Oracle) with the Samurai's Two Hand passive is great on a female unit. Since sticks scale off of MA, you can have a woman go to town with sticks and poke people to death while simultaneously giving you access to powerful status effects. In all honestly, it doesn't really matter what you use as your secondary, but keeping with the magical concept, I'd use Summon skills if only because you'd pack some large AoE with smart targeting (doesn't hurt your allies) and you get Golem, a spell that ruins the intelligence of the AI and blocks physical attacks for the amount of hp that the caster has. These skills also have the incredible ability of "not missing" it's nice. 5) Monk / Time Magic - This is actually more effective than you'd believe. Since most of the spells don't actually do damage, you can have a unit that can hit with haste on the party, and if for some reason can't kill or reach enemies, use slow on them. A team like that should be a great starting point to beat the game. I'd recommend Math Skill, but it's more of a pain and a chore to get and I don't recommend doing so on a first playthrough as the class itself is rather lackluster even if the skills themselves are very powerful. Dandragon
while i appreciate the suggestions for a team composition, i was more thinking of something along the lines of my generics being Male Monk/(fill), Female White Mage/Time Mage, and Female Geomancer/Samurai. Ramza, im still not sure what he should be. but, these are options for another time, and once again i appreciate the suggestions. Radiant Dragon
If you plan on leaving Ramza in his base class (which is fairly good, so it's not a bad idea), magic-using secondaries are probably best, since Ramza's useful skills are mostly supportive in nature, and most physical secondaries either don't help him kill enemies (Knight, Thief) or aren't great on Squires (Charge w/o range, Jump w/o Spears, Punch Skill w/o Martial Arts). The only exception would be Throw, but while it's fine there are better options. Item is also fine, since instant speed, unmissable healing/reviving is never bad. Draw Out is great because it has damage, healing, buffs and range. Black Magic is great for damage, White Magic offers more support as well as Holy for even more damage. Green Magic has a lot of utility, and the HP Drain destroys bosses since it deals percentage damage. Elemental is good for range and possible status, but is kind of weak. Time Magic lets Ramza support even harder, and occasionally drop a giant rock on his enemies. I'm not a huge fan of Summons outside of a dedicated caster, but Golem is nice. Talk Skill is better for grinding and/or min/maxing than actual combat. Math Skill is obviously amazing but also a giant pain to grind for (although Auto Battle lets the computer do the math for you). Same with Dark Knight, but much more so. The best thing about Ramza is he's incredibly flexible, since he gets the best of both Male and Female growths, so I would recommend just using whatever you like most. Parrhesia
Update 12In Which We Make Bird Friends Mandatory listening through the update. Spoiler Meet Bran. Bran's going to have some personal issues, but it's okay. Oh, shut your gob. Gaffgarion is a DUMB BITCH who DOESN'T KNOW SHIT, FUCK YOU, GAFFGARION, BIRDS ARE PERFECT. If you're a DUMB BITCH as well, you lose 10 Bravery for the fight which translates to losing two forever, note how this is inconsistent with Argath. I'm okay with it because of course you want to save the bird? (This isn't actually the counterexample to Argath I was talking about earlier - I'd forgotten about this). Gaffgarion's a dumb bitch and I hate him. Mercurio actually talks about how wild birds are tougher than domestic birds, but... It's Boco. Weirdly enough, Wiglaf's ride is also named Boco, and since there are no coincidences in video games, it's the same bird. I don't know if you still recruit him if you choose not to save him. I don't think it changes anything if you crystallise him (and thus Kill For Real) in the fight against Wiglaf, either. He might only turn knocked out, like a guest. This is a boring fight with a ton of potholes but mostly the issue is these two fucking trees which block all your sight lines. Selkie and Portia are Orators now, the best class in all of Tactics. They basically exist to, well... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sk-W06fiwlo THANKS AGRIAS agrias does not appreciate words Sadly they're early in their careers thus far and they were still in their grinding skillsets so I forgot to put Black Magic back on them. Still, they are at least merely Bad at fighting, rather than Hilariously Bad. Granted their Magic isn't very good either. Gaffgarion hits the man with his sword. I have never seen this happen before. Precious bird son. Oh, now that Mercurio's had a sprite update, his Squire class has received a buff. He can now shout at people to improve their brave by 5 (1 permanently). That's how he's been grinding, essentially. His bravery is now 77 permanently, and it will - I mean let's be real, I'm getting it to the 90s. He can also wear armour as a squire now. Combine that with the fact that the stats are pretty good and the speed in particular is above-average, and you have a viable endgame class. In the original translation, his unique abilities were named Yell and Scream. Anyway, boom. FFT came before the rebrand that chocobos had to go 'Kweh' instead of 'Wark'. I think I prefer Wark. ALL BIRDS ARE LUCKY, JUST BY BEING BIRDS. You can refuse to let Boco join up, if you're a monster. But it's okay. Because we miss three 55% Raises in the next random battle and have to load anyway. Ah, bless. But there's one last bird to showcase; Bran. Bran isn't very happy, though. He's going to go in the corner and cry. The fun doesn't end there, though! I can proudly say we have perfected BIRD ALCHEMY. KILL COUNTER five beasts Edited April 6, 2017 by Parrhesia
Mage Knight 404
Bask in the one perfect birb that is Boco, but now relish in the thought that from now on all future birbs can only walk in Boco's perfect shadow and can never share his perfection. Parrhesia
Update 13In Which A Mystery is Solved Spoiler Welcome back to bird alchemy. Well, fancy that. Hilariously and symbolically, Ovelia detaches from Delita, leaving him just sort of hoverhanding the air. So, just to help you keep up at home, the Northern Sky has staged a Southern Sky abduction of Ovelia which they will now foil. Gaffgarion has silenced the Southern Sky guys at the Cathedral and now will finish the job by killing Delita. So yeah, this, basically. They will now finish off Ovelia and her bodyguards, Agrias, Lavian and Alicia. Risk to the throne gone, Southern Sky blamed for it as a pretense for war. Well, the Northern muscle haven't cottoned onto that bit yet, so helpfully Delita gives them some political advice. Yeah, well. Torn yet again between two leadership figures, Mercurio returns to Delita's fold. And it's time to fight it out. Delita promptly oneshots Gaffgarion. Gaffgarion dies, because this game allows your victories to mat- haha i had you going there didnt i Gaffgarion is in whatever build you had him as and whatever gear you had him with. He takes that gear with him. It's a dick move and it can only be countered with a dick move of your own; specifically, taking all his shit away from him. I gave him a quarterstaff for fairness' sake. At least, that's what I thought - Dark Holy Elf disagrees and, well, I'd count how many oak staves I had in my inventory afterwards but chronologically I did this update in late March so idk Most departing guests do not take their shit with them, but deserters do so vOv In any case; I cheated. Thurio finishes the job. Delita's a paladin now. He's got most of the sword skills, but doesn't have the equipment destruction ones or Gaffgarion's lifestealing. So basically it's Agrias' skillset, plus Chant (a Mettle ability from the better squire, which is a neat touch IMO) and wayyyy better stats (a decent 7 instead of a woeful 4 attack, average instead of bad speed and 4 movement). We recruit this moron, Zell, but his gear is really bad and he's the lowest-levelled guy on the field. Delita holds the bridge while Ovelia casts a ridiculous array of defensive buffs on herself and runs for it. Since Delita has the bridge and we don't have many sources of ranged damage all we can really do is keep grinding lol It may or may not have come up, but all special classes just overwrite Squire, and only its A-abilities at that. So most paladin enemies have Defend and Counter Tackle equipped. It's stupid. I move Thurio next to the knight to finish the dude off... ... or. Shit. I don't even have the right camera angle from the eight available to me to find one where it's clear to see where he is, but he's a knight-move northeast of the guy. Well whatever, this is what Aurablast is for. The rude bitch hurls a rock at my dude who hits it for six. what the actual fuck agrias But yeah, Delita's basically unstoppable this map and Ovelia is invincible. This is Defend, by the way. It doubles your evade until the next turn. Crystals suck. The AP of the skills you get doesn't even contribute towards Job Level, so if you can't use the skills on their own merits, they're pointless. Selkie tells Delita that she preferred his old outfit. Now Delita's defend stance looks like he's crying. Anyway bye last knight. Watch the cutscene. We've no alternative then but to swing south, appealing to the Church for help.KILL COUNTER five knights. Parrhesia
Update 14In Which We Asymmetrify Warfare Spoiler Meet Mustadio. Mustadio's in a spot of bother, accosted by a Standard FFT Battle Formation. Auracite. Is it important or just a MacGuffin? I don't remember. It's new, anyway. How enthusiastic is Mercurio about this? If he picks 1, he decides we must help this dude, Mustadio, everyone gains 5 Bravery, and we need to rout. If he picks 2, we come to the EXACT SAME CONCLUSION, but now we must protect Mustadio and everyone gains 10 Bravery instead. This time, the game encourages us to take the knightly option, so I will give it a shot. This mission sucks, though. Height fucks us over. Grass is green. Their mages are free to bombard us over the walls, though, of course. Also despite my like two hours of grinding they've closed to our level again. I'm too busy bitching about that to post their archer throwing a stone at Mustadio instead of shooting him. This guy gets GEOMANCED. Then all the spells go off at once. Notably, Portia prevents this guy from moving and cuts off his Firaga on Thurio. Triple digits! So what does Mustadio do, you might ask? Mustadio's got a gun. That's about it. He knows Disable and Immobilise, and Burial - he's sort of the prototype for the FFTA archer. I keep complaining about sightlines, and this map is also extremely bad at them. Welcome to the team, Firaga guy. A good example of camera tug-of-war. The game generally tries to realign you to whatever it's feeling like whenever you do... anything. We unearth another valued employee. Hearts and minds, people, hearts and minds! OH MY GOD, AGRIAS. uh. So yeah Ronald centred a blast one south of the knight and walked into it. Ronald fucking self-terminated. You aren't getting away with my stuff that easy, Ronald!! We're waiting on Emerick's crystal but Agrias decides to end the fight early anyway. You alright, Mustadio? Fuck. I mean, good. That mission wasn't nearly as bad as I'd feared. So who were those guys anyway? Mercurio shakes his head. So this is what points to FFT coming AFTER the other Ivalice games. It makes sense, too - after the bright, vibrant and technologically-proficient atmosphere of, say, FFTA2 (probably also FF12, but I don't know it as well) we've basically entered a dark age. Mustadio is basically a mooglaboo. Goug's like... the only constant between like EVERY Ivalice game. It used to be the moogle home city in the TAs, so it stands to reason that what are now its ruins is just sort of there for the plunder. I wonder how much of this was planned at the time? Since FFT was the earliest Ivalice game to be made. In any case, this is one of the story details of FFT I do like a lot. So this is where our stories combine. Mustadio wants to see the Cardinal, so do we. Agrias asks him a second time, point-blank, why Baert's after him. You're a needy little shit, Mustadi- Poor Agrias. She just wants to do her job. KILL COUNTER two knight two archer two black mage are you seeing the pattern All Enticed guys go in Hearts and Minds but only story enemies (including ones Enticed) enter the Kill Counter. Radiant Dragon
I never used Invite much myself due to the terrible base accuracy, but I like the idea of Ramza convincing his enemies to join him with words like some kind of Fire Emblem protagonist. Parrhesia
Update 15In Which FWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeet Spoiler Here we see Agrias and Ovelia having a quick conversation. Which soon becomes Agrias talking at a brick wall. Ovelia's more interested in plucking a leaf off a tree and then dropping it. Unsurprisingly, her life's been pretty shithouse to this point. Mercurio perks up a bit at hearing her name. I guess Alma's a nun or something? This ain't Ovelia's first manipulation rodeo. MERCURIO HI HI HI MERCURIO MERCURIO MERCURIO WHY ARE YOU SHUSHING ME MERCURIO HI HEY MERCURIO, WHY ARE YOU HERE BEHIND THIS WALL MERCURIO MERCURIO NOTICE ME NOTICE MERCURIO, IVE GOT A GUN MERCURIO,;; Then we hear the saddest, weakest, most defeated fart in the world. Ovelia's trying to do the grass flute thing. (alma) I ask the deceased classical musician, Ludvig van Beethoven, how to play the piano. Without a word, he plays on, for like forty minutes, beautifully strumming key to key and note to note or whatever, in all the time signatures and everything. When he's done playing the old classical favourites, like Freebird, he turns to me. "Got the hang of it?" It works for Ovelia though, she makes a sound roughly equidistant between her initial Eeyore's Flatulence and Mercurio's Road Rage Hornet. Sure, you can have him. Or not. Welcome to summoners. We open the fight with geomancy, stopping an archer in his tracks. Geomancy basically works like... you don't get a selection of skills, but rather it's like, you unlock ground that you can use Geomancy on. And if you're standing on it you then get to deal area damage with a chance to status at people from distance, using both magic and physical attack, so Mercurio's ideal for it. Another nice Oratory skill - Mimic Darlavon puts people to sleep with boring rhetoric. Orator owns. Darlavon, by the way? The tutorial guy. So this map's going peachy, right? But there's one small problem that turns it into a motherfucker. summoners. Through the power of r/atheism, Mercurio is pretty much unharmed by it, but don't be fooled - summons are pretty nasty. They hit a huge area and, here's the key, []distinguish between friend and foe.[/i] Oh yeah and there's two of them here. The guests are useful for once. And Selkie's down again. Summons are meant to be slow but this one goes off instantly and yeah that's both my revive sources gone. Mustadio kills off an archer and runs, Agrias stops a knight. They can also splash area heals, but not for terribly much. We try our best but, well. So let's start next map in better fashion. Welcome to the team, Reginald. I don't understand why you have the shittest robe in the game on, but, hell. SUMMONERS Bye Reginald. Bye Selkie. Bye Portia. byestadio As before, we get the summoners, but the damage is done. We almost get both archers too. I mean, still, we lose on the next turn, but... in literally any other tbs this would be fine A stroke of good fortune gets me back on my feet. For, you know, one turn. Summons are the best form of spells in every single way bar their slow cast time, which only works if they actually have a slow cast time, which they don't. You know, a guy once did a video streamthrough of the game where his only unit was Mercurio, alone, as an Archer. He won, somehow. Bloody-minded persistence will get you a long way in life. The same guy who made FFT 1.3, which explains many of the design decisions. There was one section where he needed to just run into one of the late bosses, hope he didn't use a particular skill with either of his three turns, and get three maximum-damage critical-hit punches in a row. And it left me thinking; I really did have too much time back in the day, since I managed to watch the whole damn thing. Parrhesia
Update 16In Which We Have Five Deployment Slots Spoiler We begin in the- oh, for fuck's sake. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFBhR4QcBtE After his stupid overwrought metaphor, Dice pours himself some wine. Cool ways to accomplish that: 'kill someone who he is very fond of in front of him, give your knights carte blanche to attack and try to kill him' Even Gaffgarion, who is, I will remind the audience, an intense enough war criminal that it gave him unholy superpowers, is like, 'dude, chill'. not a word "Wow, archvillain-sempai, you truly are a terrifying archvillain who does many actions that make absolutely no apparent sense under the guise of P O L I T I C K I N G [tm]" The game script is tripping over itself to tell us that Dycedarg is an extremely cool Badman who is totally clever and cool and gets all the Females and totally told off those jocks. This is an exhaustive list of what Dycedarg's schemes to this point have achieved; The term 'Knight Devout' has never been used before. I don't know who it refers to. Apart from the line where the scriptwriter forces Gaffgarion to acknowledge how cool Dice is meant to be, I like his tone here; specifically "this is the most unprofessional clusterfuck I've ever had the misfortune to be involved with". Terrifying Omnipotent Archvillain, Dycedarg 'Dice' Beowulf: "lol the dudes I sent just sort of all got murdered and idk what happened to them, probs means the plan got leaked but let's just try and get on with it anyway" As long as Ovelia remains with her faithful bodyguard whose sole loyalties lie with her, who have so far destroyed all opposition to Ovelia, we are fine. Gaffgarion, bae. Dude are you a knight or a fucking herald, open the fucking portcullis An important lever. In fact, I think this lever is the only reason for this sub-scene. 'Do you think'. Is it that hard? So we sat in the walls of the Not Vatican, seat of the Not Pope, patriarch of the Not Catholicism and in the grace of Not Jesus, and everything blew over, Why? This is Final Fantasy, my dear, there's no such thing as just 'a crystal'. At least it's not an 'as you know, ' situation. It's a fairy tale. I think Lucavi just means 'demon' in whatever origin it's from, but any search for the term just produces FFT. And of course you can't have your Not Jesus without His Not Disciples. Mustadio, who was introduced to us by way of a man shouting at him to 'hand over the auracite', is Not well. Let's all stare at Mustadio. So, still useful for tech purposes, Zodiac Braves (a stupid name) or not. I wonder if the Zodiac Boyz themselves were actually called Aries/Taurus/etc. "I guess we'll have to seize another of the unspeakably powerful ancient relics, oh well" So we're off to go help liberate the unspeakably powerful ancient relic from Baert Company. We actually get a full combat load for this one!!! Welcome Solyeuse to the team. Also this is another of those filler battles. I miss Mustadio turning a ghost to stone, but he does so, because that's all this map is, is an excuse to make Mustadio look good, which he isn't, he's a geek. Instead of watching the battle, watch this GIF instead! Now watch the battle. Shut up, Mustadio! Nobody asked you how you felt! fuck off zell KILL COUNTER
