First Time on Holy War

Weapon types...

Swords > Lances > Axes. ONLY THE HERO AXE IS GOOD! EVERYTHING ELSE SUCKS.

Wind > Thunder > Fire. FIRE TOMES ARE HEAVY AND THEREFORE SUCK.

There's no con stat in this game so AS loss = weapon WT.

People with holy blood tend to be great.

You only need Levin and Sigurd for chapter 5.

That is all...

Hmm... let's see.

Edin should probably be paired with Midale for good growths on Lester and pursuit for him. There's also Jamuka but he won't give Pursuit to Lester.

Ayra could go Holyn for good HP and overkill skill on her kids which is good since they'll have Lunar and Meteor (Lunar = full power hit with enemy DEF dropped. Meteor = 5 attacks). Then there's Lex who would give the kids decent stats all around and better def than with holy. They'll miss out on Lunar but they'll both get Elite (known as Paragon in FE9/10). There's also Noish which gives the kids a decent skillset but I find Holyn or Lex better.

Lachesis' best choice is probably Beowulf. Haven't looked at others.

Sylvia's would be Claude so the kid can use the Valkyrie staff (which revives). Honestly, I don't care for her kids. Her other option is Levin but that's a bad choice since it means you get the uber wind spell late in the 2nd gen.

Briggid, same as edin. I just tried Holy with her and that makes it so Patty can use a hero sword to make up for her lack of Pursuit and giving her Lunar is a nice thing too. Faval's good enough with just about any physical father and he gets pursuit from his class so there's not much to worry about him. If not Levin, Jamuka or Midale, give her some1 with good growths and Pursuit.

Tiltyu's best choices are Levin or Azel. Levin means her kid (who appears in the first 2nd gen chapter) will come with Holsety and you'll have some1 with epic dodge quite early. Azel means both kids will be quite decent magic users. There's also this interesting combo: Tiltyu x Lex which results in the 2 kids getting high defence and low magic stats but they get Ambush and Wrath which would make at least one of the kids ridiculous.

Fury's best choice is probably Levin. She's got a pegasus knight and a sage as a kid so if you give her a dad of physical power, the sage won't be doing too well =\. Fee as the daughter of levin would probably end up with some magic so she'd be good with the magic swords.

Fin is a great alternative to Beowulf for Lachesis, but harder to do.

If you pair Levin with Tiltyu, pair Fury with Claude or Noish. Former cripples Fee offensively unless she uses strong weaponry or magic swords, but it turns both her and Sety into awesome staff weilders. Latter just gives them a great skillset. Fee will pack a huge punch, Sety not so much, but he's fine.

Holyn and Lex are the best partners for both Ayra and Brigid.

For characters not to use:

Gen 1

- Ardan. Nothing is good about him other than his natural Defense.

- Deirdre. Limited availability, and no good anyway.

- Alec and Noish will be rather obsolete after Ch2. Beowulf is slightly better than them, but only after extensive raising.

- Only use Dew if you're willing to put a lot and a lot and a lot of energy in it, as he'll remain incapable of any good punching until after promotion (where he gains Pursuit). Lachesis, however, is much easier to raise and has an awesome promoted class.

- Ethlin, Fin and Cuan leave after Ch3, so don't overrely on them (but do use them when they're around, they're all very useful).

Gen 2

- Johan/Johalva. Hero Axe is their only redeeming feature.

- Hannibal. Same issues as Ardan, pretty much.

- Corple. Too late to do much of anything.

Ronan is FE5 dude.

Like I said, FE characters with holy blood tend to be good.

Characters you definitely need to avoid is Cuan, he leaves after chapter 3. So does Ethlin and Fin but Fin is in the 2nd gen so you'll want to have him promoted.

Ardan sucks. Noish, Alec, Midale do too but they're not as terrible as Ardan.

Fin x Lachesis means Fin won't keep anything he had in Gen1 and I think he ends up with a bad lance.

First time player pairings

Aideen and Midir

Aira and Holyn or Lex but wait until ch.3 so Aira can get the hero sword from one of them.

Lachesis and Beowulf

Fury and Levin: you can make this pairing in one turn in ch.4(Silesia) and this is a canon pairing.

Sylvia and Claude

Tiltyu and Azel

Brigid and Jamka or Holyn

In Gen.2 I'd suggest picking Johan rather than Johalva.

This is important Train Fin because he returns in the second gen and if he's promoted, it will save you a headache.

^ A matter of opinion. Although Arden is trash Noish is decent and Alec is fairly useful (makes a good father and fighter).

As for pairings, for a first timer pairings pitbuller hit the nail on the head. However my personal preferences are

Claude x Fury (Sety gets Valkyrie Staff which nearly saves him from uselessness without Holesty).

Levin x Tiltyu (Arthur joins in the first chapter with Holesty, instant ownage!)

Sylvia x Nobody (Corple is a pain to recruit and Layla is far better than Leen)

Ayra x Lex (Paragon plus the great growths is certainly useful)

Brigid x Holyn (Patty with Moonlight Sword? YES!!! Patty with Strength? YES!!! Faval still owns just as much)

Lachesis x Alec (Alec makes a good father, passes on Pursuit and Awareness which means Delmudd will have a better time surviving. Both children also have great stats)

Don't listen to Archy, he phails. ;) *Obvious sarcasm, love you Archy! <3*

The pairings I recommend are.

MideelxEdin- Pursuit and the Hero Bow makes Lester instantly useful, and Lana will largely be a more offensive Edin.

LexxAyra- Elite, Ambush, and great stats for the kids.

FinxLachesis- A bit more difficult than AlecxLachesis, but provides much better durability due to higher Luck and inheriting Prayer.

Levin/Azel/NonexSylvia- Azel gives Pursuit and high Magic growth, making Lynn a decent fighter with a magic sword and Corple pretty decent after promotion. Levin provides Holsety for Corple. Otherwise, you get Sharlow and Laylea. Sharlow has Elite, so he levels quickly, and Laylea Charisma which helps in utility.

ClaudexFury- Sety gets great Magic and the Valkyrie Staff, while Phee can use Recover after promotion.

Azel/LevinxTiltyu- Arthur is overall the best user of Holsety, but Teeny can suffer due to lack of doubling. Azel builds up faster and provides excellent growths for both.

BriggidxDew/Holyn- Dew gives Solar Sword and excellent growths and Bargain aids Faval, while Holyn gives the Hero Sword and Lunar Sword for Patty, making her a better fighter at join.

For the first generation, use everyone. All the characters have some use (Except Arden XD), so it's a waste to bench anyone.

Characters you definitely need to avoid is Cuan, he leaves after chapter 3. So does Ethlin and Fin but Fin is in the 2nd gen so you'll want to have him promoted.

It's nearly impossible to get the Knight Ring and the Bargain Ring without Cuan in Ch2, and Cuan has to be trained a bit for that. Definitely use him when he's around, just not moreso than others.

Fin x Lachesis means Fin won't keep anything he had in Gen1 and I think he ends up with a bad lance.

Fee gets much more milage out of Fin's lances, and anything he loses is transported to the shop anyway. If he's promoted in Gen 2 as you say, then he'll be killing left and right even with that Iron Lance during Ch7, and after that, he can buy his stuff back. In exchange, you get Prayer on Delmud and Nanna, which is much more helpful overall than Charge, much better Luk on both, and Nanna gets +5 Spd if you talk to her with Fin after conquering Darna.

Nah, it's like in Radiant Dawn, where it literally saves it there and not just "suspends".

Example:

You save on chapter 3 turn 23 and never save again. Each time you load up that save, you will always end up there and that save won't be gone till you delete or overwrite it.

Lovers can give gold to each other, and thieves can give it to everyone. Don't bother giving gold to Sigurd though, he does amazing in the arena and he should take all of Deirdre's gold at the start of Ch3.

Chapters are longer, but there's also only 12 maps in the game, and you fight like 1-2 armies per castle seize (usually one attacks you and one defends the next castle), with some infrequent small enemy groups along the way.
