With the Kickstarter-backed revival of the series slated for later this year, Sega is giving us the chance to get caught up on one of the most ambitious franchises in gaming history. I'm genuinely surprised. Shenmue remasters have been asked for for years, but the idea always came with red tape. These games are faithful reconstructions of Yokosuka, Japan and Hong Kong while featuring actual branded products from the real world. Some products are from companies that no longer exist, and others that absolutely need to be contacted such as Coca Cola. There is a common hashtag on twitter #SaveShenmue. Sega Addressed this with a new hashtag: #ShenmueSaved

Confirmed Details

  • These are not remasters in the sense of having rebuilt graphics. But they do have HD resolution.
  • New UI.
  • New control options with a classic controls option for purists
  • Dual Audio. You can play with the Japanese or English voiceover.
  • Presumably no issues with transfer data between the first and second game. For those of us in the US, transfering data between the games was a feature not possible unless you were willing to resort to hacks or buying the game's international releases. No word yet on whether transfer data will be implemented between this collection and Shenmue 3.
  • No Switch version, but the Xbox One release is surprising given there is no announced release of Shenmue 3 for that platform.
  • The games will support achievements for their respective systems. Some of the people that got to demo the games had achievements appear as they played.
  • Proposed price for both games is $30USD.
