I've gotten fairly addicted to the good old NES games lately. I'd like to know if anybody can recommend me any good games to play.

Thanks in advance ;)

I should've mentioned, but of course I already know about Super Mario Bros. and Zelda, and they're great games.

But I wanted to know which NES games aside of the incredibly popular titles (Mario, Zelda, Megaman, etc.) are good games to play.

I would say that Just Breed might be worth looking into. It is a mix of a traditional JRPG and a Stratagy RPG.

I've never really liked 8bit and the size of the NES catalogue scares me (it is at least 1500 games...) it took me a week to audit the MegaDrive catalogue down to 375 titles most of which should be worth playing...the time consumed have kept me doing the same with the SNES

The three Castlevania games are pretty superb (if you don't mind some of the quirks). Great music, excellent platforming, etc.

There's also Konami Wai Wai World, another side-scroller gem. Two other games I'd recommend are Uninvited and Shadowgate if you're into point-and-click adventures. The former is horror while the latter is fantasy.

A personal favourite of mine would be Phantom Fighter. I'm not sure if you'll like it, but I love that game. It's basically you going through cities and into buildings, fighting "Kyonshi"s as a master of kung-fu.

That's all I can think of, off the top of my head.

Here's an old list I made up a few months back. I haven't played my NES in a few months, but Just Breed definitely deserves to be on this list, as do some others I got into playing.

[!!!] = Must play

*all games U.S. if not specified*

NES

8 Eyes (Castlevania ripoff)

Batman Returns (some of the more detailed graphics on the NES)

Battletoads (one of the most complex games, coding-wise)

Biohazard (pirate homebrew, but a complete recreation of Resident Evil 1 on the NES. If you can get it to boot, try it).

Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle [!]

Chip'n'Dale Rescue Rangers

Darkwing Duck [!!!]

Deadly Tower (one of the worst games on the NES D:)

Destiny of an Emperor [!!!]

Destiny of an Emperor 2 [J] (makes sure you get the best patch)

Dragon Quest [!]

Dragon Quest II [!]

Dragon Quest III [!]

Dragon Quest IV [!]

Duck Tales [!]

Duck Tales 2 [!]

Mother

Famicom Wars

Faxanadu [!!!] (get it NOW)

Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy II

Super Dodge Ball

Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros. 2

I also made a list sometime ago about some good hacks for various systems, NES included. I could scrounge that up, if someone wants ^^

Thanks a lot, people. I really appreciate it.

And please, if you could find that list of good hacks for any system (preferably NES, SNES and GBA), then I would really appreciate that as well.

Some good hacks that I recommend:

NES:

  • Numerous Megaman 2 hacks
  • Mario Adventure and other good SMB3 hacks
  • Ultimate (and Second Ultimate) Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle

SNES:

  • Numerous Super Metroid hacks, especially Redesign
  • The Legend of Zelda: Parallel Worlds
  • Numerous Super Mario World hacks

Not huge lists, but still some stuff that I'd enjoy.

Zelda II - Part 2

Zelda II - Part 3

Unfortunately, I'm missing a ton of great hacks still. frantik's Super Mario Unlimited is one of the more captivating hacks I've seen in a while (lot's of nice ASM features thrown in). And here's some great Japanese hacks for Super Mario Bros. I never got around to playing. Hopefully the Yoshi's Island hack is in there, as is the Metroid hack (yes, you play Metriod-style Mario. As in, explore new areas after getting items Metroid).

Worth mentioning outside of NES... Zelda: Parallel Worlds is a great hack with a lot of investment, but a lot of the dungeon designs are lacking. VIP Mario and Brutal Mario are hacks everyone needs to play. Maybe more will come to me later :/

Utilize this list guys.

Metal Storm looks to be a fun game, though haven't the chance to play it yet. It looks to be a side-scrollin' action game, with proportions of gravity thrown in for fun: your character has the opportunity to flip from the floor to the roof at will. If no roof is above you, you'll teleport from the top of the screen to the bottom until you hit a solid object. Worth a try if you're looking for something new.

.

Guerrilla War looks also to be a mix of Contra and Metal Gear in terms of presentation. Shooting, and all that.

I can definitely recommend Little Nemo: The Dream Master. It's a Capcom game from the time when almost everything they did from Mega Man to their Disney games turned to gold, and whenever anyone asks me to recommend an underappreciated NES game, I reach for that one.
