The Complete Fódlan Timeline

Recommended Posts

This originally started as a personal way for me to keep track of Fódlan's timeline, but I decided to share it with the world because why not. We don't know the dates of everything that happened in Three Houses's backstory, but maybe putting everything we know together might be helpful. Events are not listed unless we have approximate dates for them (so Jeralt's birth year is not estimated, nor is the year when he met Rhea, though I would guess he's younger than 200), but if you think something not mentioned here should be added, please say so.

It should be noted that each Imperial Year begins with the Great Tree Moon, which is the equivalent of April, and ends with the Lone Moon. This wasn't reflected in the roster until Wave 4, so, for example, Lysithea is now listed as being born in Imperial Year 1164 instead of 1165. For convenience, the moons will be numbered by their Gregorian equivalents (the 21st of the Guardian Moon is 1/21, the 13th of the Pegasus Moon is 2/13, and so on). Events are not organized within years unless they have a specific date assigned.

Part I: Fódlan's Prehistory

Spoiler
  • The goddess Sothis descends upon the continent of Fódlan and takes the form of a human. She creates her children, the Nabateans, from her blood, and they share their knowledge with the native humans to create a prosperous civilization.
  • Humans turn their back on the goddess and engage in senseless conflict. The Agarthan civilization eventually challenges Sothis to battle, and the ensuing war scorches the land and kills most of humanity. The surviving Agarthans retreat underground and come to be known as those who slither in the dark.
  • Over a long period of time, Sothis restores the land. Once the continent is at peace, she falls into slumber in the Holy Tomb. The Nabateans build a settlement in Zanado to watch over Sothis’s resting place.
  • Under the guidance of those who slither in the dark, the bandit Nemesis breaks into the Holy Tomb and pillages Sothis’s body, acquiring the Crest of Flames from her blood. Those who slither in the dark create the Sword of the Creator for him from Sothis's bones and heart.
  • Nemesis uses his newfound power to massacre the Nabateans of Zanado, and their bones and blood are used to create Heroes’ Relics and Crests for his subordinates, the 10 Elites. Sothis’s youngest child is the only survivor of the massacre.
  • The survivor adopts the name Seiros and sets out seeking revenge against Nemesis, who becomes the "King of Liberation" and the ruler of Fódlan. She eventually recruits the remaining Nabateans, who were outside Zanado during the massacre, to her cause.

Great work, this might certainly help things in the future for me when doing research about what event should have happened when.

Still, isn't there an issue with the only information really being available in game are horribly biased towards one faction or another? How do they know the truth from church or Agarthan propaganda? How do they know that Sothis is a goddess and not just another Dragon? Do we even have evidence she was the first of her kind?

I suppose you're asking why I'm treating Rhea's information at the end of VW as the truth. End-of-VW Rhea is probably the least biased character who knows everything about the backstory, since at that point she regrets lying about Fódlan's past and wants to make amends. Lying wouldn't make sense from a writing standpoint either because she's framed by the narrative as being truthful, without any evidence that she isn't. Rhea also refers to the real Sothis as the "progenitor god" so she isn't talking about the fictionalized Sothis worshiped by the Church. Sothis even refers to herself as the "progenitor god" shortly before merging with Byleth. And Sothis is probably a dragon, but "dragon" and "god" are basically interchangeable in most Fire Emblem games anyway.

The Agarthans are a cult based entirely around hating Sothis and everyone who isn't them, so I don't consider them a fully reliable source. The Romance of the World's Perdition probably has some truth to it, but its filtered through an anti-Sothis lens.

At the end of Verdant Wind, Rhea says that people began to think of themselves as gods and that's why they challenged Sothis to battle.

Except Myson says they need to return the world to mortal hands at then end of Azure Moon, Arundel wants to see the moment humanity is free from Rhea's control at the end of Crimson Flower, they describe themselves as children of men in Romance of the World's Perdition.

So if the Agarthan's think of themselves as mortal humans, and have always thought of themselves that way, does that not disagree with one part of Rhea's information at the end of VW? And if one part is wrong, does that not cast a shadow on the rest of the information?

Not really. Even if Rhea is mistaken on one point there's enough evidence to show that everything else she talks about is most likely true. Assuming you're right and the Agarthans didn't think of themselves as gods  (and they inherently think of all humans aside from themselves as "beasts" which doesn't make them seem very humble), Rhea is still trying to be truthful even if she doesn't understand why the Agarthans fought Sothis.

While the Romance of the World's Perdition is obviously heavily biased in the slitherers' favor, it also corroborates and complements many of the info Rhea provides about them in VW:

"In the land of Thinis, where the old gods are said to live, the False God has awakened. Its looming, heteromorphic vessel was resurrected to sink the world to the depths of the ocean. It will bring extinction to all children of men, and salvation to all beasts of the land, sky, and sea. For the children of men who spilled too much blood of life, it promises only cruel retribution."

  • The agarthans were fully aware Sothis' human form is not her real one, and only took it after she arrived in Fodlan. The last sentence also heavily implies she started paying attention or showed worry towards them due to how much bloodsheed their shenanigans were causing, which in true agarthan fashion, they never seem to regard as a bad thing to do.
  • They see themselves as the only humans (or "children of men" in this case), while pretty much everyone else is simply a beast, and this mentality continues in the present game as they regard the surface humans beasts as well. What exactly this implies is anyone's guess (are there different human breeds and the molemen are just racist? Or are the humans that came after their people actually Sothis's creations? )
  • Also Sothis may or may not have called herself a goddess, which didn't go so well with the agarthans who already lived in the land and likely workshipped something else (assiming they actually did have a religion of some sort). At the very least we know Rhea and the other nabateans see her as a god-like being.

The False God must be defeated before the world sinks into a watery grave. To this end, the children of men have erected pillars of light upon the land. Thinis, Malum, Septen, and Llium were utterly destroyed. Those lands have vanished from this world. Yet even still, the False God stands. And soon, a flood aptly named Despair will drown this world.

  • Both Rhea and the Agarthan text agree the slitherers made the first strike, and from their own account, they did so as a premeditated strike as they feared Sothis would try to meddle with their affairs. For this purpose, the pillars of light were made and they wasted no time in employing against her and the lands her children lived in. Despite the destruction, Sothis survived and retaliated swiftly with some "flood".
  • The Agarthans also see themselves as the center of the world.

The children of men fled to the depths of the earth, beyond sight of the False God, beyond the embrace of the sacred sun, and beyond the reach of the waters of Despair. They swore a fervent oath of revenge against the surface world, ruled by beasts, and against their tormenter, the False God.

  • The survivors hid themselves underground (likely in a glorified bunker that later became Shambhala) and swore revenge against Sothis, and they hate everyone in the surface as a proxy of being protected/workshipped by her.
