  1. For best, I have to give it to SoV. Each character just looks amazing and Hidari's artstyle just also happens to be my favourite in the series, Sachiko Wada being a very close second. Also, I really appreciate the amount of man cleavage we get with Saber, Atlas and Jesse.

For worst, I'm not sure since I do think each FE has its really strong designs and not so good designs. If I had to pick one, I'd probably say Awakening, solely because I hate some of the class costumes. I think their overall characters are designed well and I do like Kozaki's art, but oh my god some class designs are horrendous. Cavaliers and Knights? Rotten. Heroes??? Yeah exactly. Overall very bleh.

On the topic of Engage, I actually quite like Engage's designs, Hortensia included. I understand why people would be averse to it considering how different it is from other FEs, but I really enjoy the semi-medieval/semi-modern aesthetic its characters have going, especially in their casual attire in the Somniel.

  2. Don't particularly care for the anima triangle tbh. In games where it was split Fire/Thunder/Wind, there wasn't near enough differences to justify it and either a) one magic type was just better (wind in GotHW) or b) mages were shite in general (RD). The magic triangle in general is rather redundant imo, whether it be anima only or the GBA anime/light/dark triangle cause the only units in those games that used tomes and thus would get something out of the magic triangle would naturally have good res.

I do think Engage has done it the best with how it differed magic. All under one weapon rank, but each type does something different. Fire is an all-rounder, wind is effective v fliers as per and is light but weak normally and thunder magic is super strong and has 3 range but can't double. Then you have the new surge tomes which are super powerful and never miss but can only be used at close range.

I also think Engage's Bow/Knife/Tome getting broken by Arts was a pretty nice inclusion and way to include tomes in some form of weapon triangle sitch if they have to be included.

  3. I personally really enjoy Engage despite its flaws.

Gameplay wise, it is one of the best FE games. Really good difficulty balancing, even on maddening. Great maps. Emblems feel powerful but not broken. Good class diversity and class types were a great addition. This is the first FE  (with reclassing) in a while where I feel like the meta isn't completely dominated by wyverns and that units that aren't mounted are utter crap. Biggest critique I have about gameplay is unit balancing. Early game units feel weak and need a lot of investing and said investment feels worthless once Kagetsu and the other mid-game pre-promotes come along and completely overshadow the Firene/Brodia units. But that's about it and regardless, every unit is still viable even if you do get straight up upgrades in some chapters. The Fell Xenologue is horrible though, but the DLC for this game is in general tbh.

Story wise... yeah we all know. I do think though that I don't have as much issue with the plot because it feels very Saturday morning cartoon/90s 4Kids dub vibes which is funny. I also really don't think the devs had any intentions of delivering this massive plot which I think softens it a little, compared with Fates which felt like it was was supposed to be this super grand and nuanced plot that fell super flat. Following Three Houses was gonna be hard anyways but I do appreciate a less intense story every now and again and Engage provided that. I do think that there were great moments too. Chapter 10/11 was great imo as was chapter 17, both gameplay and story wise. I think the story's biggest flaw is that the story was designed around highlighting the gameplay (chapter 11 and 17 being key examples of this) which made the story suffer. If the story had a bit more fine tuning, I do think it could've been a good but simple plot. Instead we got a fairly meh plot that even in its simplicity, was still rough.

Characters are okay. I do find the majority of the cast a bit meh, especially the Firenese and Brodians, but following the cast of Fodlan, who in fairness had Three Houses and Three Hopes to develop, its not really fair lol. If I had to list my top 5 characters, it would be Alear, Ivy, Fogado, Mauvier and Yunaka.

Engage also looks great. Best looking 3D FE by a mile. Feels like it combines the best visual aspects of every era of FE. This style would be perfect for remaking the GBA titles, its literally perfect. My only issue with the style is the Emblem's faces, but I think thats more so because I have a certain image of them from their base games and og art that kinda clashes with Engage's.

Overall, pretty decent game. I do hope the series follows suit in terms of gameplay, but I would really love if story and character wise, they took some cues from Three Houses, especially Azure Moon.

  4. From a narrative stand point, I think it's great. Gameplay wise, it's iffy. So many units are punished so badly from a lack of availability, especially the majority of part 1 units, more so units who are new to RD which really sucks cause the new units are already hurt by a lack of any character depth due to the shitty support system so them being hard to use hurts even more. However, despite this, I still do think its cool and really made RD's story feel like a grand spectacle and an actual war and did grey morality and dramatic irony pretty well. Like Florete said, I'm happy RD did it but I'm also happy for it to remain a RD only thing.

I was wondering how easy it is to get second seals in this game? With the weapon customization and emblem ring mechanics, I was wanting to tinker with my army a bit (Like making Framme a speedy sword unit, while I make Alear a healer for example) but I'm not sure how well it'd play out compared to Fates or awakening.

Second seals become available from chapter 8 in the shop (you also get a couple from chests I think) and you get a couple available every chapter in the shop, until chapter 17 where they become infinitely buyable. So yeah they are in fairly large supply.

Does it scale to player progress?

To expand more on this, the FX doesn't scale difficulty wise with your playthrough. The FX's difficulty is separate from whatever file you are playing currently, in that you could be playing maddening mode in the base game but choose to play normal mode in the FX.

The only thing your main file affects is what units and emblems (plus supports and bond levels, and also any skills too) you have available. Unit levels and inventory are all pre-set in the FX. So basically you can make the FX a bit easier by having decent supports and higher bond levels on units and you may be artificially making the FX somewhat more difficult by playing early on where you less emblems, supports and skills available for your units. Also worth noting that pre-promotes are inherently better in the FX as units that join in base classes are forced back into their base classes for the first two FX maps meanwhile pre-promotes stay in the normal classes, thus have 5/6 move.

    For example:

    Spoiler

In the first FX, all your units are level 15 and anyone who wasn't promoted when recruited goes back to their base class, meanwhile pre-promotes retain their promoted status. So in the first mission, you can choose to deploy and a level 15 Axe Fighter Boucheron with 12 strength, or if you have her, a level 15 Berserker Panette with 22 strength or a Saphir with 20 strength. It's kinda comical actually.

The characters with special classes are obviously internal level 20, but what about the characters that join as promoted level 1? All of the other prepromotes in the game have internal level consistent with promoting at level 15.

Can you buy seals for the new classes before beating the fell xenologue? Downside to waiting for new character levels to match story progression would be delaying class skills on these new classes if not.

Am pretty sure that, like Mauvier, Gregory and Madeline come with an internal level of 20. (Also just want to point out not all units come with Int. Level 15. Rosado and Goldmary are 17, Lindon is 18, Saphir 19 and like I said, Mauvier is 20).

No, the new seals (and Cannoneer's cannons) are only unlocked in the shop once you have beaten the FX.

  8. I think for myself, waiting until post-Solm is best to do the FX. You'll have Seadall by then which will help make the missions go faster to get the five units. Also by this time, the skirmishes and DPs (if you left them this late) wont feel as much of a gut punch in difficulty because of the level 20 units.

    EDIT:

Just finished the DLC. The full version of Emblem Engage is available now in Alear's room lol

As for what I thought about it...

    Spoiler

I'm not a fan tbh. The last two maps of the FX were horrible to play through and felt like long slogs, which is strange considering Engage has honestly not had many maps that I didn't enjoy some aspect of. The only map in the main game I could say was annoying was Chapter 15 and 19 cause of the miasma but even then they aren't horrible.

I just can't fathom why they thought it was a good idea to restrict you to set unit levels and inventories. I do understand not wanting there to be a barrier of entry if people wanted to play the DLC asap, but I think they could've just either had the difficulty scale like the DPs do, or just have each chapter have a recommended difficulty. Considering we get super powerful units at the end of the DLC and you can do the DLC from chapter 6, it's just stupid. Even if they wanted to restrict grinding, just do what they do in TT and RT and make it so you gain no exp, SP and your items/staves aren't consumed. At least that would make playing it that more bearable and as if you have any input on the maps. All I can hope for is that someone develops some really good LTC strat to make playing through the DLC on subsequent playthroughs less of a headache.

As for the story, I enjoyed Engage's for what it was but I think the fact I didn't enjoy the gameplay experience, I found myself rolling my eyes often and just not engaging with the story. Nil and Nel are eh (have yet to see their supports) and the Four Winds are there. Overall, I just found the experience to be pretty unenjoyable, which is honestly super disappointing considering how fun base game Engage is. Really wish they gave us a NG+ cause I feel like that would solve so many issues with Engage.

Do you gain xp in these missions for your main campaign? I heard somewhere that the lvls are preset for these missions.

Yeah, everything is preset in the FX.

NGL, I haven't finished yet but this DLC is disappointing to say the least.

With how the FX works and how level is predetermined, you would think you might as well play ASAP to get everything but that just fucks up your early game since you get 5 overpowered units that fuck up your skirmish levels. But with how bad post game is, if you wait until then you get 5 units with nothing to do with them. And on subsequent runs, you'll have to replay all 6 missions again to get anything from them.

I really wish they just made it so the FX was a dlc campaign you played over the course of the game where each chapter got more difficult so that you could actually get something from it. Having to play these six missions every time I start a new game to have to use preset characters that gain nothing from doing the missions is very unfortunate to the say the least.

  10. One run I've tried (and dropped since I got bored and I kinda want to wait until the DLC is out) is an under 18 run. Since a lot of people pointed out how young Engage's cast is and how many kids there are, I wanted to actual try a run where my only units are child soldiers lol. Thanks to datamines, we know unit ages and which characters are under 18.

    They are:

    Spoiler

    Alear

    Clanne

    Framme

    Etie

    Céline

    Jean

    Anna

    Alcryst

    Citrinne

    Fogado

    Hortensia

    Rosado

    Veyle

Madeline would probably be added to the list after DLC is out since Marni is 16 which will round out the list to a nice 14, the max unit slots. I'll probably reattempt this run after DLC with Madeline cause why not.

  11. I mean Alear's dragonstone is destroyed and nothing is mentioned about Veyle's dragonstone being anywhere (I vaguely remember her mentioning she buried it but that could also just be me making stuff up in my head lol), so I can't imagine them transforming anytime soon. Even with Nel, I have a feeling her transforming will be locked to the Fell Xenologue tbh

    Spoiler

Story wise it seems like Nil holds her dragonstone that allows her to transform, and based on accidental screenshots from the Hong Kong trailer (and also datamines) it seems like Nil wont be playable and is an enemy at some point in the Fell Xenologue.

Is there anything specific that causes Spirit Gems/Pretty Pebbles to appear in the Somniel? Because it's been a few days and I haven't seen any

You have to have a specific level of relationship with Sommie and they only appear after you complete normal chapters/paralogues and they don't appear after skirmishes

  13. I don't necessarily think Engage made me appreciate TH more tbh. While I do overall prefer TH (I have nearly 1000 hours sunk in and is the only FE where I went out of my way to 100% the Support Log (which in retrospect, TH has it the easiest out of any game by far) and I'm still actively trying to create a 100% NG+ file), I do think Engage is a nice return to form for FE and I think sets a nice precedent for future FEs. TH was fun for the one game however, on a whole, the gameplay of TH is lacking imo. Engage is much more intuitive and engaging (lol) gameplay wise and feels more rewarding when faced with difficult challenges, even on Maddening which actually increases in difficulty quite well over time rather than being the agitating slogfest that is TH Maddening. Overall, as a gameplay experience Engage is much better imo and TH is overall lacking in the actually strategy section of the game. Also the visuals. TH is hella ugly and the colour pallete is boring af. Engage is a nice refreshing breath of fresh air.

Overall tho, I still prefer TH. The music is much better (Engage is lacking imo, the only standout is Solm's music), the setting is more interesting and I haven't really latched on to any of the characters (even Rosado who I loved the idea of pre-release). This could change on subsequent playthroughs which I am currently waiting for the final DLC to come out before I hop into a new playthrough, however as of now TH>Engage tho I do think I'd rank Engage decently high up in my FE Rankings.

So, this DLC-exclusive "Nel" character has a dragon form that can be used in gameplay, but Alear is still essentially a human-in-all-but-name. Why does IS continue to torture those who wanted to see an actual dragon protagonist?

Anyway, I wonder how Nel's dragon form works; do they just stay in dragon form for the whole battle, or are there limits on its duration?

It seems to just be a breath item she uses whenever she wants. Considering the new Mage Cannoneer class also uses what is counted as special weapons, I'm assuming we'll get a new inventory menu for special weapons where her breath attack and the new classes cannons will be kept.

  15. By the looks of it based on tweets, it is gonna be a CS type thing where units are at certain levels however, supports and bonds with Emblems will carry over I guess? Am not to sure. But it seems like we get Nil and Nel and the three of the Four Wings post Fell Xenologue rather than them being recruited as the story goes on which is nice.

Am really looking forward to this tbh. Is it gonna be messy, yeah. Based on evil Alcryst, I'm expecting to get my fill of laughs lol. Also am expecting Mauvier to back stab us since he's the only one who looks like his prime Elyos self unlike Zelestia, Gregory and Madeline.

  16. If I had to rank them it would be SoV>Awakening>Fates.

Shadows of Valentia bar none. I liked Gaiden even before SoV was announced so seeing it updated to SoV was amazing. The music is gorgeous, the art is fantastic and I love the more RPG-esque features like dungeon crawling and town exploration. While its maps aren't the best and the story is rather basic and you can tell its from the 90s, I still really enjoyed the game for its presentation and other gameplay aspects.

Awakening was my first FE like many so I hold it quite dear to me. It definitely has its issues, however, it has a charm to it and I really do enjoy it, tho I do prefer SoV.

Fates is ehhh. From a gameplay perspective, Conquest is one of the best in the series bar none. However Birthright is bland and Revelation is far to gimmicky imo. I do think my opinion of Fates was extremely soured due to pre-release hype that was not met. I don't have as negative an opinion on it that I used to but I still think that it essentially feels like a 'Awakening did this and that was successful' kind of game when I wish it just tried to stand on its own. Though, like I said, I will always stand by Conquest having some of the best gameplay in the series.

I'm aware that emblem rings get forcefully unequipped in arena, but does this also apply to DLC emblems? I'm specifically wondering if Tiki's Starsphere can be active on levels gained from arena without inheriting it.

I haven't tested it properly, but yeah all emblem rings/bracelets get removed since you can face dlc emblems in the arena by chance also you so if you want to make use of starsphere, you do need to inherit it, same as with lineage if you want to make use of that

  18. Well...

Marth - Alear/Veyle. Alear is fairly obvious as to why. As for Veyle, I like to imagine that while Alear is going about as an Emblem themself, they give Marth to Veyle so Marth can protect her (well that's what I did lol). Also Veyle has a conversation with Marth in his paralogue.

Celica - Céline. This is actually really sad in retrospect cause really it should be Alfred but for years, as far as Eve and Céline knew, Alfred was gonna die so Céline ended up being entrusted with Celica so yeah.

Sigurd - He's hard to pin done. Personally I enjoy putting him with Vander. They have a conversation in Sigurd's paralogue about Lumera and Vander appears in multiple end game cutscenes so I think its neat. Also it's Alfred that is in his tutorial

Leif - Pretty hard to pin down actually. Ivy is the only one who has a conversation with him in his paralogue but she's better suited elsewhere. In his tutorial, I'm pretty sure its Boucheron he's engaged with but Boucheron is not a main character enough to be the canon choice of an Emblem imo. I personally gave him to Alcryst since you get Leif in Brodia and I do think Alcryst and Leif are actually quite similar, both having self-image issues so I think it suits.

    Roy - Diamant obvi

    Lyn - Ivy obvi

Eirika - Rosado is who who joins with her and is in her tutorial so that fits (also the fact it's an emblem about duality and Rosado fucks with gender I think is cool also I love Rosado and I love Eirika and Ephraim so I like it lol). Goldmary could also be argued for since she has a boss conversation with her but I would still pick Rosado. I would also argue for one of the twins since they are boxart characters and one of the twins having the Azure Twin emblem makes sense.

    Ike - Timerra obvi

Micaiah - Obviously there is Yunaka who comes with her. However, I also think Mauvier would work. He is a more prominent character plot wise, he uses Miccy's emblem as an enemy and is from Firene, where Miccy's emblem originates from. Either works imo.

Lucina - Alfred. We see Alfred with her in the opening cutscene and in their bond conversation, Lucina mentions that her ring belonged to Firene 1000 years ago and iirc (I haven't seen all the bond convos) is the only ring to mention belonging to another country aside from one they are already in.

Corrin - Seadall of course. I also would argue for Fogado cause Corrin is Solm's ring, but I do think Seadall, as much as it doesn't match gameplay wise, lore wish works better

Byleth - Hortensia. She uses him as an enemy and has a conversation in his paralogue. Also she attends an academy in Elusia so...

As for the DLC emblems cause why not:

Tiki is seen with Framme in her tutorial, but I think Alear/Veyle makes the most sense cause dragons. I do think she'll probably end up with one of the two new dragons we see from the Fell Xenologue.

Hector is paired with Vander in his tutorial but is said to be alt!Firene's bracelet.

Soren is paired with Clanne in his tutorial but is said to be alt!Elusia's bracelet.

Chrobin is paired with Alfred in the tutorial, but idk if they said they are from an alt country. I imagine Chrom will end up with one of the two dragons like Tiki.

Camilla is paired with Yunaka in her tutorial but is said to be alt!Solm's bracelte.

Edelgard is with Alear in the tutroial. No idea for the alt Elyos.

Finally Veronica is also paired with Alear in the tutorial but mentions being alt!Brodia's braclet.
