Well, this patch can work with emulators that can't deal with larger file sizes: Project Naga has that problem with some emulators. I do see people still bring this patch up as well, it's not dead or anything. Project Naga has to patch some things as well to finish it off.

I liked playing with this patch for my first playthrough.

Cool, glad to hear you liked this patch.

I think Project Naga is really interesting as it seems they figured out how to replace the font and did a lot of other stuff the base patch I started from couldn't. I'll have to look around and see if Naga ever released any sources as I'd be interested to see them.

  2. Do you know if it is for a headered ROM or an unheadered ROM?

Looking back at the sources, I believe this should be for a headered ROM. I didn't modify anything in this part of the code from the original sources. Here's a quote from the readme in the fe4transsrc package:

    PROBLEMS?

This patch only works on a headered FE4 ROM. The size of the ROM should be:
    4, 194, 816 bytes
    If it is instead
    4, 194, 304 bytes
then you have a ROM without a header and you should either find one which does, or find
a program to add a header to it for you.
Headers are unnecessary and I've considered releasing a headerless version (as opposed to
a headered version, not in addition to) but I can't be bothered at the moment.
  3. gharnef seems like a pretty intelligent person, he should be able to figure the rest out himself

    Ha, thanks :)

Dude I just got into the hacking business. I was only trying to help out the cause.

    I appreciate everyone's help so far :)

Nick, here's a description of what's going on with the graphics - the graphics for some things are visible if you open up the ROM in a sprite editor program. Things like the Holy Weapons are plainly visible and you could edit them in place in the ROM. Other images - like character portraits - are not visible in a sprite editor, even though they're in the ROM somewhere. This is because they're compressed - like what Winzip does to a .zip file, shrinks it down - and compressed data is much harder to work with than its uncompressed form. I was able to change Sigurd's compressed portrait because I knew where in the ROM his compressed portrait data was. How did I know this? I have some Japanese documents that detail the starting location and ending location for portrait graphics. I'm not sure how the author came about this information, but I bet they did something like run the game through an ASM debugger, found a routine that's called to decompress graphics, watched for that routine to be called and made notes of the data areas referenced.

    ... whew

So why can't I just replace the Holy Blood chart graphics for the names, like Holsety with Forseti? Because, since they're compressed, I don't know where they're stored as data inside of the ROM. If I look at a save state for the game in YY-CHR - which is a snapshot of the running MEMORY set - I can see the graphics in their UNCOMPRESSED form. They have to be uncompressed to be displayed as a graphic. But this does not tell me where they are loaded from, or stored in compressed fashion in the ROM.

So... I could probably do what others did to get the compressed portrait locations BUT I don't have the time to dedicate to just this right now.

I'm planning on tackling the rest of the text changes in the next few days and updating the patch. That should do it for most text based issues. Graphics, missing translations... those are the things that are going to take a while.

  4. For science, using the FE4 hack docs, google translate and this website, I hacked Prince Marth's portrait from FE3 into FE4 as Sigurd's portrait.

Also, using save states and YY-CHR I found where the graphics for the map, Holy Blood chart and more all are in memory. So I am getting somewhere with this at least ..

  5. I believe we decided Brigid was "stupid" and reverted it back to Briggid. Same goes for Tailto and Claud I think?

Not that Brigid stupid (I really should have used a better word than "stupid") but it's the same spelling as a Celtic mythological figure. Since we're not calling Tordo "Thor," and we're not calling Belhalla "Valhalla" I think going with the reference over the mythological name makes sense.

Oh, what's that you say, what about Mjolnir? Talk to NoA ;)

I have a list of all the changes in a spreadsheet... trying to figure out a better place to put it. Will probably just spoiler it in the first post...

  6. A few things - formal list of changes so far will be made available soon. Just deciding where to upload/best way to share.

TOR HAMMER made me lol - it's been fixed.

Whomever found the brother's overflowed convo, I think I have a fix.

Agree that the NaGa TeXt should be changed, I understand why it was done this way but don't like it.

Re: half-width font, I like the idea but it's a little out of my league right now. The font DOES get compressed in the patch it seems - the code that does this actually doesn't work right now because of a bug in the lz77 code (so I use a pre-compressed one to compile the patch). This might have other implications in spacing calculation and addressing if the chars are shrunk in size. TBH deep technical stuff like this and graphics changing are future todos, I primarily wanted to nail down the script before tackling stuff like this.

Watch the first post for an updated patch in a few mins.

  7. fiddling with the binary folks' graphics compressor

    [spoiler=Q.E.D.]FE4akanesim_00049.png

problem is that I haven't found anything yet resembling locations of where the addresses for graphics and crap starts, I only worked from one that happened to mention a single address... but yes I managed to insert this from some portraits deep in their files

stay tuned on a step-by-step to insert these, but I still need to figure out the addresses...

I'm doing a FE4 patch update for official NoA stuff. Things like Grandbell -> Grannvale, Holsety -> Forseti, Fala Flame -> Valflame etc. One thing I'd love to do is update a few graphics in the game - the World Map, for one, because it still says "Grandbell." I see that you've made some progress in getting at the images in the ROM ... have you gotten any further with finding the addresses for images?

  8. I haven't had a chance to try the new patch until now.

However, the game was running too slow.

I tried the unpatched rom and it was still slow, so it's not the patch that's not working.

I think it's either the emulator, or my computer(it has recently been damaged, physically).

I'm not going to continue playtesting until I get this figured out.

By the way, you should update the first post with the new patch and changes that have been made.

Sorry to hear about your computer and thanks for playtesting up until now. First post patch link always points to newest but yeah, a formal list is my next work order.

  9. In that case, who decides what is "stupid"? I'd go with the Museum not being official either, personally.

I dunno, we all should? There was universal dislike for "Tailto" so I took it as being stupid :)

I need to get my act together and work on a formal list of changes that have been made and get other suggested ones out there too. Just been too busy with work.

  10. I want to point out that the ingame romanization of the Lord character in the first Fire Emblem is Marth. Even though his name going by the kana and setting of the original refers to Mars, a war god.

Point is, even if a name really can be shown to refer to a mythological figure, that doesn't automatically mean the name would be spelt the same as said figure's name ingame or in other sources that come from IS.

Well said, this is a better way of putting what I was trying to get at with my Brigid/Briggid explanation.

  11. Gharnef, what's your take on getting the rest of the untranslated stuff translated (plus the freezing glitch). It'd obviously have to wait until you're done making the current changes, but would you be interested in doing it?

TBH it's not my immediate goal (that's just updating existing scripts to be more consistent with the current mythology) but something to put on the TODO list.

  12. Oh my god! These graphics are awesome! Gharnef, insert these graphics into the next patch please, and let bookofholsety edit the graphics!!!

Slow down there, Andretti ... :)

I'd LOVE to do this (as well as update the world Map - "Grandbell" et cetera - and the Holy Blood chart, and more) but I'm not quite there yet. Editing sprites shouldn't be too bad but the FE logo splash screen, for example, isn't a sprite - it's shown as a background. There are some things you can see in TLP if you open up the ROM, so those could easily be edited (because they're sprites I think?). But then again I don't know much about ROM hacking so I could be talking out of my butt.

  13. Bastard: A word meaning someone born out of wedlock. While often used as an insult, it really isn't an insult.

Dastard: A word meaning a villain or treacherous deciever. Actually IS an insult.

    Please keep using Dastard.

Also, as far as Tiltyu, which I prefer, it's worth noting that just because Fire Emblem games often use mythology for their weapon/character naming conventions, this doesn't mean that you always have to use the "ancient god" naming convention all the time. Besides, if Tiltyu is an original name just for FE4/5, makes it more unique and memorable, don't you think?

Dastard/Bastard ... I think after reading book'o'holsety's interpretation of the Japanese literal translation I'm going to go with "Arvis ... DAMN YOU!" instead of calling him a (b|d)astard. In terms of other uses, I'm thinking "dastard" because of the definitions.

Yeah, it's clear that real mythology influences all kinds of stuff - especially this game in particular. I don't think just going with the real mythological name for things makes sense unless it's clearly supposed to be that way. Belhalla clearly references Valhalla, Briggid references Brigid, Cigyun:Sigyn, Loptyr:Loki, Tordo, Tor Hammer blah blah - we all get it.

My initial militancy on stuff like "Tiltyu ->Tailto" was because I thought it was 'official.' Now I understand that if we haven't seen it in an official NoA capacity - FE13 chars, for example, or other artwork - then it's really not official.

That being said, while 'Briggid' (Brigid) and 'Claud' (vs. Claude) aren't official, they're listed in the museum as such... and for Briggid, she's clearly referencing the Celtic Brigid, so I think this is a good interpretation. I'm thinking the priority for name changing is:

    • Check for Official NoA name.
    • No Official NoA? Check the Museum.
    • Museum name stupid compared to well known name? Use well known name.
Following 3, I think we should undo Tailto & Teeny
  14. Japanese FE media likes to give "official romanizations" (which i'll henceforth refer to as NoJ names for simplicity's sake), which are basically their interpretations of the Japanese names of characters rendered in English, as seen in the TCG and the Museum website; in the case of Tiltyu, "Tailto" is her official romanization, but everyone calls her Tiltyu instead. in most cases the fandom as a whole has actually been using NoJ names for years as the primary names they give to characters (Celice is the biggest example that comes to mind), although there are a few exceptions to this usage (nobody uses Siglud, Rackesis or Tailto for example)

Thanks for the link, I've got a better understanding now of where the names come from. I'm inclined to go back to Tiltyu. I was hoping for some "hard and fast" rule, like "use everything from the museum" but that uses friggin' Siglud and Tailto. And then they use Ira, which was NoA'd to Ayra. So now my head's spinning.

tldr: I'm cool staying the course on Tinny, Tiltyu, etc. if they haven't been NoA'd and their names are otherwise stupid.
