  1. Why hello there, hackers with significantly more talent than I! I seem to have gotten myself into a..... rather mystifying situation. .......holy shit where do I start. So, I'm new to music hacking. When I first got into the hacking business little over a year ago, I dabbled in it (using Sappy cause I'm a hipster), got frustrated and left it to rot while I figured out other aspects of hacking magic. But back then I also made a Rom specifically for music testing, which I applied a patch or two to without documenting anything. This being the problem here. (The only one I know I inserted was the FE7 Native Instrument Map.) Recently I finally figured out the basics of inserting songs that don't come out as ear torture, and I've been using said old testing Rom for....well... testing them. They work absolutely fine there, but when I insert them into the Rom for my actual hack, they have....some slight oddities. As an example: here's a song in my (now completely bugged) testing Rom: (Yes, it IS one of the boss themes from Mega Man X4) Correct Song.mp4 Sounds pretty good. Just how I want it to sound. Now here's the same song (exact same .s file) in my actual Rom: Bugged Song.mp4 (btw this is how it sounds in any Rom other than the testing one, not just this particular one). I guess the game can't handle the amount of instruments being played, since it periodically mutes some of them. Both of these are played with the aformentioned Native Instrument Patch, and the song has the same priority in both Roms. I didn't insert any custom sound samples into the test Rom (or the other one). I usually just dick around with stuff like this until it works, but this time I'm well and truly stumped.
  2. So I've been trying for a while now, but I still can't for the life of me figure out how to insert custom music into the game. Every tutorial I seem to find is either full of broken images, videos and tags making them really hard to follow or they're just very confusing in general. So, can someone point me to the easiest method of inserting music into the game?
  3. So I'm working on a song for my FE hack, and it plays perfectly in sappy and it is exactly how I want it to sound. However, once I insert it into the rom it plays but in some parts of the song several drum notes don't play or the drums are just cut out altogether for certain sections of the song. If anyone has any idea how to fix a problem like this, help would be much appreciated, thanks.
  4. Introduction Hopefully at this point you've been reading my other tutorials and are getting a good grasp on how the sound system works for the GBAFE games. If you haven't read them already, and don't know anything about the topics: Sappy Graphical User Interface (GUI) Explained Basic Voice Table Editing in Sappy Sample Sound Format Explained In this tutorial I'll teach you how to insert custom samples into your ROM. There are two main methods to this. One uses Sappy exclusively, and the other involves the use of several different programs, namely: Viena SoundFont Editor VGMTrans GBA Mus Riper Wavosaur this Frequency Calculator tool Full credit for this goes to gogojjtech, whose tutorial taught me an insane amount about this topic. I'm basically rewriting his tutorial. What can you do with custom samples? So much. You can make custom sound effects and a much greater depth of custom music. It's... kind of empowering to be able to do that. So let's get started. 4/9/17: Photobucket is holding all my images hostage so please bear with me while I find a more permanent image hoster.
  5. Introduction Hello children. Today I'm going to teach you the basics of editing FE (and GBA) sample editing. Here you'll learn: All about the voice table Navigating the voice table editor in Sappy Taking existing voices from other songs in the game Creating and editing multi-instruments Creating and editing drum instruments; how to fix the boop Envelopes (Atk/Dec/Sus/Rel) and how to use them Don't worry, it's all very simple and just requires a little bit of occasional maths and a decent understanding of how to use a hex editor. You'll need a working version of Sappy and if you haven't already, please read my explanation of the Sappy UI and if you're using FE7 or FE8, I highly recommend patching your ROM with the12-track patch. This tutorial is oriented at editing EXISTING resources within the ROM, and less so on inserting NEW resources. Still, I will teach you how to use some new resources too. Custom samples and importing samples will be taught in another tutorial. I'll be using the words "voice" and "instrument" interchangeably. Questions within the thread are more than welcome. Also, this tutorial contains lots of hyperlinks to FEUniverse since it was originally formatted for FEUniverse (go figure). I really can't be bothered updating them so you'll just have to deal with it.
  6. Hello, I've got a problem with MIDI insertion using Blazer's tutorial. When i copy data from song.gba and set the pointers like in this tutorial, set the pointer to 0x8000000+adress and launch the game it freezes. P.S. I've tried to open the track in sappy, but it shows more than 100 tracks. What have I done wrong? What can I do to fix this?
  7. Okay, so I followed the tutorial found in the Music resource topic and got better results from these tools than the ELF method which resulted in me crashing the game. Even tho the game isn't crashing upon booting anymore like the elf method, the song I inserted over the Title theme will not play at all. Did I do something wrong?
