Dont forget to make sure you have the game set to fe8 in ea

    image.png.4402514e73ab11badc993ff99931a13e.png

As far as I can tell, I have the most recent version of Event Assembler.

Edit: So apparently '_LOAD1' works, weird.

  2. Am i just being stupid or does Event Assembler not come with a command for loading units in FE8? The only tutorial I could find for FE8 eventing claims that it should be LOAD1, but that returns an error because that code apparently doesn't exist, and I've tried poking around in the EA standart library but found nothing(even the place where LOU1 is defined for FE 6 and 7 has no equivalent for FE8)

I've been entertaining the idea of learning how to hack FE8, but eventing is pretty hard if you can't even load units on the map, and as far as I can find, nobody else seems to have had this problem, so, what gives?

  3. I thought of this too, but when I tried it at first it didn't work, but your response made me try again and, as it turns out, it does work if the ORG command is the first thing in the file.

    Thanks!

I just don't know why none of the guides and tutorials and exemples I read mentioned it...

  4. I've been trying to insert a song to FE7 with event assembler, but I can't figure out how to make it work:

Event Assembler doesn't even show an error when I run it at the end of the proccess, but when I try to open the rom the screen is just white.

For the record what I did was place a midi over mid2agb, then take the resulting .s file and placing it over s2ea, then I opened Music Installer.event and added this:

    SongTable(8,Lussaria_Destiny,MapMusicGroup)
    #include "Lussaria_Destiny.event"

and then I ran Event Assembler, which gave no errors.

As far as I can tell, I followed all the instructions, but the resulting room doesn't start and is just a white screen.

  5. So I've been trying for a while now, but I still can't for the life of me figure out how to insert custom music into the game. Every tutorial I seem to find is either full of broken images, videos and tags making them really hard to follow or  they're just very confusing in general.

So, can someone point me to the easiest method of inserting music into the game?

  6. So I noticed that, while I've gotten a lot of feedback on chapter 3A, nobody I've seen has commented to chapter 3B, which got me curious to know whether no one actually went to 3B or if it's just not noteworthy or there are no complaints about it, so I've set up a poll to know how many people went to each route and what did they think about it.

Feel free to share your thoughts on the routes too. It would be a lot of help.

Hey bud, good hack so far, I'm around chapter 7 and it has been quite a challenge.

Are you supposed to recruit Lior? Because a tried to use any of the girls to see if it would trigger something but I haven't got it yet.

Yes, you're supposed to recruit him with either Ronan or Motoyasu. Maybe I should revise the dialogue to make that clearer...

Hey @AsukaDrag, glad to see those problems we discussed earlier aren't overrunning the experience of your hack :) glad it's working out!

Thanks, the problems are still there and I'm still looking for a solution, but at I'm very happy that it seems most people aren't being affected and it's not keeping them from playing my game.

That sounds like it should work, but when I try to load it, I get an error message saying Unsupported VisualBoyAdvance save game version 9. I have absolutely no idea what is going wrong, because it sounds like its working fine for everyone else.

Huh, that's weird... Maybe your VisualBoyAdvance is a different version or something...?

How do I use the save? My VBA uses .sa1 files for saving data, and trying to change the file provided just brings up a new game.

If I'm not mistaken, .sa1 files are saved games while .sg1 files are savestates. In order to load a savestate, select File>Load after opening up the game and then choose the desired savestate.

Nah, I wouldn't mind giving you some specifics. It will definitely take me some time to evaluate, so I'll proly look at a few characters at a time and post my thoughts. Keep in mind these are just my thoughts, and I'm not really sure what your aim is for the character, but I figure second opinions never hurt.

Can you post that savestate for the end of the prologue, without it being comprssed/zipped? I had a hard time getting through without it glitching out, I have linux and it wouldn't let me extract the file with the program I use. It happened at all random times from round 7ish for me.

Oh I'm suprised I didn't mention this above, but I loved the prologue. That was a fun and epic way to start off, I hope you are able to debug it.

Here, a save from right before Chapter 1.

I really need to do something about that glitchy prologue... I just need to find out how. It seems that even without the bugs  It seems to be a divisive chapter even without them with some agreeing with you and some not being able to get through it, so the glitches are unacceptable.

Thanks in advance btw. I look foward to your feedback.

Just finished playing, awesome job man truly. Definitely HUGE potential here. The story is great I think, and I don't really have any criticisim on anything but balance. The balance is just entirely all over the place, so I'm not going to give specifics because just about every character needs work. Not really a huge deal atm because there is enough enemies, some of which are really OP themselves, so it's still challenging enough to not be broken. Some of the character are ridiculously OP though, while others are just mediocre.

One thing I can say, is that you really need to give all characters strengths and weaknesses, rather than just have these god like characters, like Ronan, Noah, Derik, etc. Some of their strengths just don't fit either. Desire has 18/18 def/res, and she is a 5 valkyrie, while Linda a lvl 5 general has 17 defense. Ash at lvl 20 lord has 5 defense and 10 res....

Looking forward to seeing more though!

Well man I'm glad to hear you liked it.

As for the balance... It's the one area where not having any playtesters aside from myself really bites me... Its really tough to judge what characters are good and what characters aren't when I only have my playstyle as a reference...

I tried to have each character have its own strengths and weaknesses(the key word here being "tried") and they all certainly have different stat spreads, but I don't think I was able to make them all be useful like I wanted to, so I actually would really like to hear the specifics on every character if it isn't too much trouble. I wanted to go for a "everyone is really good" approach at balance, so as long as they don't completely break the game, I don't mind some units being kinda OP, and the only one I know I'll nerf so far is Derrick because he's just ridiculous. Also, I really like characters in Fire Emblem who have stat spreads that don't match their class, so that explains the super defensive Desiree, plus she needed to have high Def for the purposes of chapter 3x, so that works out.

    @AsukaDrag:

Honestly I want to continue playing to complete the hack (because it looks promising), but... seeing the game crash after 22 grueling turns just kills you inside, ya know

EDIT: Just tried it out again. It didn't freeze up this time. Wonderful.

Sorry to hear you had to go through that. I've no idea what is causing the game to crash like that sometimes...

Glad to hear its been resolved, though! Hope you enjoy your time playing!

    As for your question...

    Spoiler

Neither of them is recruitable. They're mostly there to mix things up in an otherwise mostly uneventful chapter. There are many recruitable bosses in the game, so I see how you'd think that, though.

    Hey,

I'm a longtime player of the Fire Emblem series and fangames.  I've been really enjoying your hack!

I have to say I really enjoyed the Prologue.  It really was a fun way to introduce the setting, while allowing players to feel familiar with the heavy allusion to a well-known historical battle.

The difficulty level of this hack is really on point.  This hack is no walk in the park even for someone with FE experience, but it's not mind-numbingly hard to the point that a casual gamer would have trouble enjoying it.  I found the first couple of turns of chapter 2 to be pretty annoying, though, since green units love to charge and die before you can do anything about it.

Also, you really like dumping large numbers of enemies on the board and having players use chokepoints to hold them off.  As someone who admits to playing their share of the dynasty warriors series, this styple works for me.

I like the characters and the levels so far.  Certain characters are RIDICULOUS.  I have a question in the spoiler tag below.

      Reveal hidden contents

Is Derrick supposed to be the Jeigen?

I visited the place where the games tells you not to use him but...

He's incredibly good.  His ridiculous defense allows him to tank almost every enemy that I've seen so far, his 3 range weapon allows him to take down bosses with ease, and to boot he has great growths (unless I'm just lucky, I haven't missed a speed growth on him yet).  I can see that other powerful units such as Agitha, Linda, and Robert 2 will outclass him eventually, but only by a bit.

Hope work on this is continuing at a good pace.  I'm finding this hack very fun.

    - Eternal

Well, I'm glad to hear you're liking it so far! And thank you for all your feedback! I'll take your criticism on Chapter 2 into account when I release the next patch.

    As for your question...

    Spoiler

That house is mostly supposed to be a joke, and Derrick is supposed to be more of an Oyfaye, but you're right, right now, he's much better than he's supposed to be, expect nerfs in the future.

As for his speed... You did get somewhat lucky, his speed growth is pretty high at 40%, but not THAT high.

That actually makes sense, and I do like the fact that you can't just rely on dodges and instead have to actually strategize about who to attack with whom. That being said there is such high enemy density in the chapters that it's very easy for your units to be surrounded and killed.

I took the 3A route, and I actually love the idea of the poisoned gas in the forest. However, it is quite hard to navigate with the poison, especially with the points where you are forced to navigate your units in a straight line where the poison hits in several points. Either widen the path for the allies, or indicate where the poison will be coming from can fix that issue.

I had to re-start because I lost too many units (I wasn't going to reset for the female shaman or Tansy because, frankly, they're garbage). So I will try to adopt a new strategy that can minimize the poison damage. That said, the female shaman (I don't remember her name because she died the turn she was recruited) spawns in a terrible spot. She doesn't have the stats to survive the enemies and has limited movement due to being surrounded. There is little reason to keep her alive due to this (rescue with Tansy, maybe? but once again, garbage).

First of, thanks for the feedback!

Not sure how I would indicate where the poison comes from with the limited tileset of that chapter. I tried placing enemies in the way of the poison gas at the start of the chapter so the player could take note of where the poison was before they reached it, but maybe it wasn't enough.

That said, I kind of agree that the trek through that narrow path is probably the weakest part of the chapter, so I may widen the path whenever I release a balance patch (which I plan to do soon-ish) and that should also lessen the problem with Agitha(the female shaman)'s spawn point. By the way, she and Tansy are supposed to be growth units that get really strong if you put in the effort to train them, though in Tansy's case she's a flyer so she's not supposed to have super high stats because balance.

I believe I've encountered a bug.  I used the guiding ring on Agitha (female shaman) and promoted her to Druid.  There did not appear to be a sprite for her during promotion.  Later on I tried using her in battle and it crashed the game.

    Maybe a sprite missing there?

Believe it or not, I had just found this bug myself before reading this comment, I have absolutely no idea what caused it, but reinserting the druid animation seemed to fix it, so I'm releasing an updated version of the patch that fixes it HERE.

I really enjoyed the prologue, and was excited to play on, but during the beginning of gameplay of chapter 1 the game just crashed. It froze and ended up only showing my units, and my cursor completely disappeared.

I'm really sorry to hear that, but I've never seen that happen nor do I have any idea as to what caused it. Do you remember doing something that may be the cause?

I hope it doesn't desencourage you from playing on. Jut let me know if I can do anything to help.

Any particular reason why the generic enemies have ridiculously high Skill and Speed stats? I encountered enemy Fighters in Chapters 1 and 2 with ~4-6 Strength but ~15 Skill.

    balance please

Well, Skill is useless, anyway, so it makes no difference.

I'm pretty sure the absurdly high Skill is a result of me trying to make the enemies have decent hit rates on your characters, but maybe I went I tiny bit overboard:)

I'll probably readjust it in the next patch whenever that is.

  15. After over a year, I finally got around to revisiting this project, so...

    Patch 0.2 is out!!!

This patch adds 5 new chapters and goes up to Chapter 8. It also tries to fix a few bugs, but I make no promises.

Here are some screenshots of the new stuff:

Also, because I've always hated the name "Spreading Flames" this hack is now officially named: Fire Emblem: The Blade's Legacy! Let's see for how long this name sticks.

    @AsukaDrag

I see. You have put lots of things into this chapter, it's just that I don't see any bug-worthy parts to it... well maybe not. One of the differences from the format of your events from mine is that you stated your map changes. Then you put some kind of SHORT 0xE28... I know I'm no EA master, but I don't really see the point of that? Usually you just make your tile changes in the actual file itself (I use Tiled), and then depending on what kind of tile change it is, you create certain events that correspond to the tile change (maybe that's what you're doing but I've never seen this before and I don't know what it means). This probably isn't really the solution, but I just thought I'd point it out because I have no idea what it means haha.

Also, sometimes the difficult path is the only path, and maybe this chapter is just a lesson learned on documenting everything you do after testing. I really think you should reconsider and stop making the excuse that the chapter took you the most work. It sounds like you've tried a lot already and didn't get the result you wanted, so why not just start over? I've redone my hack 3 times: (1) I had 7 chapters on the very first patch which never got released, (2) then I started over and made 6 new chapters which got released (V1.0), then I had to get rid of those, (3) and the patch that is released now had 2 (V1.1), (4) and now I am restarting AGAIN because I've taken a new direction and have new chapters there as well and there are about 6 chapters planned and a few that are in early development. So we're looking at around 18 chapters here and only about 1/6 of them actually making the cut. Every hacker has had to make adjustments to their project, whether it be small or massive. It's just a thing you go through, nothing comes out perfectly on the first try, and this is one of those times for you. I know there's a technical issue here, but I can't seem to point out the bug just by looking at your file and this is my advice. Other people who want to swing by and help out will try, and I'm not saying they can't, because there are other people who are very resourceful on here. But I'm just saying I haven't seen other people reply, and everything in your events looks like they're properly formatted to me.

I would love to be able to find this thing but I don't think I'll get to it. I hope you don't give up on hacking though! I know it's a time consuming, (sometimes) pain in the ass, but I find it pretty rewarding once it's all put together. Anywho, I should be studying and not be on serenes.

I understand where you're coming from, I greatly appreciate you trying to help, but I currently just really don't have the time to redo the entire chapter without any guarantee that it'll actually work. Right now, I have about 1/20th of the free time I had when I was working on this hack. To give you an idea, I used to be able to make an entire chapter in a few days, but now it took me an entire month to do 1/10th of a chapter.

That being said, I decided I'll move up the time limit of the chapter to 25 turns(without changing anything else), which greatly decreases the chances of the player encountering the soft reset (I played through the chapter 3 times while testing with 3 different strategies without encountering it) and I'll release the patch as it is. I'm sure SOMEONE will run into the bug and have their experience ruined, and that breaks my heart, but its not like I'd rather release the game now before I just give up on it, as its not like I'll be able to work on it for a while.

Now, that's a incomplete solution that kinda neuters the end of the chapter and doesn't always work, so I'm still looking for any better solutions, so if anyone has any idea about this issue, I welcome the help.

  17. 2 hours ago, Avril Lavigne said:

I'd have to see your events and stuff, but that just seems like a weird, unfortunate bug that (I hate to say it), might be unfixable--and this is completely based off of what I've read in the original posts and here. I mean, I don't know if adding the events anywhere else in the ROM would make a difference...probably the lamest advice I've ever given here. But hey, I'd try anything if my ROM was bugged.

I know this might not sound like something you might not wanna do, but maybe just change the prologue? New map, new events, but also preserving the story so that there aren't continuity errors in future chapters? Start fresh with that chapter and i'm sure it'll fix the issue, as much as you might not want to.

I've had anomalous bugs before. Sometimes there might not be a very plain-sight explanation for what has gone wrong, so you just gotta take the bull by the horns and put the extra work in.

Probably not the answer you're looking for, but it's an option. 99.99999% sure that'll fix your bug because you'll have a different setup...the only thing is that a new bug could appear, and that would be extremely unlucky, like, EXTREMELY unlucky. Just test the shit out of your ROM when you're hacking. Always make backups after you're done each chapter (for example: you would copy your ROM and have a ROM that would have a name like FEhack_Chapter1.gba, and continue keeping backups after each chapter you complete) And keep .sav files for every chapter too, that way if you wanna quickly go back to one of your chapters then you can just use that.

First off, thanks for taking the time to try and help me with my problem, I really do appreciate it!

Now, as for the idea of changing the prologue, I probably want to try some other solutions before doing that, because this chapter in particular was the one that took me the most work to do, and was also the only one I got at sort of feedback on, which, aside from the bug reports, was mostly positive. Plus it's one of the ones I myself enjoy playing the most.

As for where the events are in the rom, it's the first chapter so they are on D80000, which is a common starting point for events.

As for the backups, I'm admittedly pretty bad at making and documenting them, however, one thing I can say about this bug is that over the couse of fixing a diferent bug, I had to start fresh from a new rom and reinsert all the things I had made for the hack, and the soft reset resurfaced as soon as I had inserted both the map and events of this chapter and almost nothing else. Because of this I've decided to attach the Events for the chapter in this post. Be forewarned, though, its a pretty long file. (It IS a 30 turn defense map with freakishly convoluted ending events)
