Is that subtext actually subtext or is it just a case of people seeing what they want to see?

In any case, I'm really disappointed in the MLM options (or lack of, rather). At the very least I think that there should be one bi option for each house, because people who go into the game blind and don't know how to recruit other characters can very easily end up having zero same-sex options.

    Spoiler

Rolling off of this, how hard is it to recruit Linhardt in other routes?

From what I can understand you'd need high-ish reason and faith skills, but Byleth is physically inclined with faith only as a budding talent. So on any other path you'd have to build a magic M!Byleth just to unlock the single mlm option.

I would disagree on some level. The last few games created a very clear expectation of what an "S support" was. Additionally, the last game created the concept of an "A+ support" to serve as a platonic counterpart to an S support. Combining these two things, there would have been zero reason for anyone stumbling upon the same-sex S supports to assume that there would not be three options. Even if one might question why they would choose Gilbert/Alois -- there exists precedent even for that (e.g. Gunter and Walhart.)

By using the "S support" term for these at all (and abandoning the previous "A+ support" functionality), they went out of their way to obfuscate the number of available options in a way that would confuse anyone looking at them without external information.

Even if no review mentioned this, it doesn't change the fact that (had the game not been datamined) there would have been people seeing the S support option, taking it, and realizing that they've made a mistake. Perhaps the other review sites messed up, but at the end of the day, it is the fault of the game for providing that impression at all.

I already recanted my stance after seeing the official Nintendo statement about homosexual options (seeming to promise more than we got, but written in a way that they're not technically lying - the worst kind of lying).

But I want to clarify that at the time I had heard that the Sothis and Rhea S-supports with F!Byleth weren't romantic too, so I thought it was all equal that S sometimes doesn't mean romance. But now that I know it's not the case and that M!Byleth is the only one with S-supports that aren't romantic, then yes I agree that this is queer-baiting.

  3. It's unfair to blame Nintendo on IGN or other review sites mishandling their review, as by that logic then the guy that struggled with the Cuphead tutorial was right to criticize the game. The IGN reviewer made an assumption without confirming when they put up that support list.

But to recognize your point, some of Claude's dialogue does come across as a bit baited, especially that dance cutscene. I think it's rather minor (and the worst of it came from a leaker, not a sponsored reviewer) but I can see your point.

Look, I'm frustrated too but there's so many more valid criticisms to give Nintendo/IS on how they handled this that we really don't need to dip into the fringes.

Edit: What official Nintendo announcement about same-sex relationships?

Edit2: Nevermind, I found it. An interview with Automaton and Nintendo of Japan. In Fire Emblem Three Houses, it is possible for the Protagonist to have same-sex relationships with certain characters. However, we cannot explain this topic in more detail as to not ruin the excitement of all users who are looking forward to it. [read: spoilers] Regarding character raising, we have prepared a lot of options, so please kindly anticipate it.

Okay, everything I said about Nintendo not baiting anyone? I take it all back. This really suggests something much larger than what we got.

So nintendo just queerbaited everyone... wtf with that Alois support

As much as I'm disappointed and of all the things I want to call Nintendo and IS, queer baiting isn't one of them. You can't really be baited when you're leaking info from an unreleased game without the full context, that's our own fault.

We have every right to be upset about the lack of mlm options though.

Pretty sure treehouse did not localize this.

    I can't confirm but I think you're right.

We know Cup of Tea Productions is doing the voice acting, and historically they've worked with 8-4 (the ones that localized Awakening and Echoes). So unless they've changed business partners, then Nintendo Treehouse probably didn't localize this game.

  6. Spoiler

We don't know for sure about Caspar yet, as while there appears to be some other explicitly queer relationships in the game besides with Byleth I've also heard his ending with Linhardt is teasingly non-explicit.

Like Raven and Lucius from Blazing Sword. Or Ike and Soren/Ranulf from the Tellius games. Or like Forsyth and Python in Echoes.

  7. Spoiler

Even in real life, a lot of people don't noticeably age much in the middle of their lives. So while five years is super dynamic for a teenager, for a 40-year-old not so much. Case in point: Keanu Reeves hasn't aged in 20 years (unless he is an immortal vampire).

So doesn't surprise me that none of the older teaching staff is going to get new portraits. Personally I'm okay with that, as Hanneman's is too dapper to mess with.

More concerned about how they're going to resolve Alois' wife, as while the 20+ age gaps do freak me out I'm as equally disturbed that his wife either has to die during the timeskip and I date a widower or I'm a homewrecker. Both leave a sour taste in my mouth.

  8. In the same tweet acknowledging the Dimitri and Claude mistakes, the IGN writer admitted they didn't mark Sothis and Rhea as bisexual because he didn't finish those supports yet. He can see from the screen that they are S rank-able, he just wanted to confirm they are romantic first.

So it's likely that there are still 5 wlw options, and 3 mlm.

...and I'm still salty about it

    Whoops! Someone mentioned it already.

We got info on a newly leaked character and I figured this is the best thread for it.

He's related to Felix, probably his dad.

That's not a new character, we've seen it before. It's just been a while since we've gotten new info, so some thought he got cut or something.

If you look on the Three Houses page, he's already on the character sheet.

  10. Homophobia is a spectrum of behavior and can leak down into the tiniest of actions, that's why the term micro-aggression and internalized prejudice exist. Someone (or in this case some developer) might not be (as you put it) "criminally" homophobic but through their actions can support a prejudice against the queer community is still homophobia.

Personally I don't think IS nor Nintendo did this intentionally, I honestly think they thought these three options were a boon to the gay community. But you can not intend to do harm and still display homophobia, and the fact that the mlm options play into stereotypes and are very much lacking in comparison to others is homophobic.

But at this point if you're going to dismiss every argument on this board is not valid enough for you, then we are just going to spin in circles.

So let me respond in kind: you're wrong.

  11. But we all have a right to have harsh criticism of the developers and demand better, as myself and many others believe these options (and the lack of options) do display homophobia. Probably not explicitly but an internal prejudice portrayed through stereotypes and lack of representation in comparison to others.

If you don't believe that and refuse to acknowledge the arguments, then frankly you're just plain wrong.

  12. If your point is that you don't fundamentally see a problem in the mlm options, on a forum thread predominately about people fundamentally finding a problem with the mlm options (all of which have posted valid and supported arguments at to why this is problematic), then it seems you're against the point of the thread itself and I have to wonder why you're here?

  13. At this point Riva I have no idea what point you're trying to make, other than being contrarian and argumentative just because and defending the fact that you like Gilbert as a romance option (which is not under fire).

Whether or not you personally are okay with a 20+ year age gap, as evident of this board and many others is that a large majority of people have a problem with it. And it's not something you can really challenge nor argue, we all have a right to be upset about this and criticize IS for it.

The fact that this Fire Emblem game's primary target audience is teenagers isn't even a point of contention, that's just business facts. Sure they want the money of older fans too but the eye is always on the prize (the 13 to 19 age demographic). So a teenage queer male playing this game and realizing that their only true mlm option is playing into a feminine boy stereotype while wlw gets at least three good options including a main protagonist (eliminating Sothis and Rhea just to be fair about age gaps) and that heterosexuals can romance the entire male or female student body can't help but feel IS and Nintendo has excluded them.

  14. So its basically Lonqu 2.0, except a bisexual girl so everyone is up in arms

How? Lon'qu didn't actually dislike women at all and never suggested preferring men instead (other than Vaike's misunderstanding in Harvest Scramble). The whole aversion thing was just past trauma ala Guy from Tales of the Abyss.

If I were to localize Soleil (and the option to make her flat out Bi was off the table) I think I'd make her class skill "Girl Power" and work a feminist angle, where her supports are more about empowering women rather than flirting. Like a sorority sister.

It would make an interesting counter to Inigo, a shamless flirt has a daughter that's a SJW. It would at least wipe out most of this awkward writing while still maintaining the spirit of it. Again, only if just flat out making her Bi was vetoed, since that would be way easier.

Don't exactly know how to work out the fainting thing though.

  15. To take a little swerve away from (this admittedly awesome) story/dialogue stuff, I've got some technical questions:

    1. The Nohr path challenge. Is it purely statistical (more foes, better stats, less exp) or is there objective variety (protect target, hold the line, clear in X turns, seize, escape, anything else other than defeat boss/defeat all)? And is there any variety in the other paths?

    2. Skills/parallel seal: How does it work exactly? With 5 non-personal skill slots, only four on a direct unpromoted->promoted leveling path, how do you pick up more? If the parallel seal doesn't reset level, does using one as soon as you get a skill in the class you're in get you the parallel class' skill too? Or do you just have to buy skills off of streetpass?

    3. Forging. What does it do with weapon durability gone? Is there any drawback other than resources/cost? Does it last forever and ever?

  16. I admit, I'm actually extremely upset about this. One of the driving things about Awakening was that there were no 'canon' pairings. There was a lot of flexibility for headcanons in general, which made it fun for me, since I write fanfiction.

I finally started on my own novelization of Awakening (a dime a dozen I know) and F!RobinxInigo was the planned Avatar paired. The last thing I expected was for the 'happy ending' implied for the pairing (and other Avatar pairing) to be near-debunked by the new FE game. And it just…Really, really hurts. And sapped almost all motivation for the fic in one swoop, which is an awful feeling in of itself.

I was willing to accept them being AU versions of the kids. This I am *far* less willing to accept. There's probably more to this that we're not seeing, but until the situation is clarified, I'm now thinking of not buying FE14 at all. New information might change my mind, but that Odin/Lazward support frankly doesn't give me much hope.

If it helps, the Outrealm gate means this could just be an alternate version of them again. Like if you never got them hitched in the original game, so they took off after the war ended since no reason to stay or felt like intruders with their baby selves.

We already had at least two Inigo's with Days of Future Past, whose to say there can't be three?

  17. Glad they took the plunge with same-sex S supports, although since the bisexual characters seem to be taking cues from Legault and Tharja that raises some unfortunate implications.

But baby steps I guess. RIP Silas-ship T-T

  18. Leon's .. SON?! WHAT!?

    and that not!gaius.. mmh...

    thx for the pic

and Joker's son reminds me too much of L from death note for some reasons...

If his son was a female then it would upset the balance between male and female children.

I'd rather not open the gender vs. sex can of worms but can anybody just confirm that I'm reading this right?

And of course, ninja'd by the post above me.

  19. I love both series but this one has yet to really capture my interest yet. The designs just seem to suck the life out of both series, taking away most of the outworldly, slightly creepy, and bizarre SMT demon/persona designs along with the elegant simplicity of the Fire Emblem ones.

It just looks too anime same-y for me. Like, nothing really sticks out as an original concept yet.

But despite all that beef, I'd still ignore that and love the game if it can guarantee the infamous difficulty of Atlus games (like Catherine, Etrian Odessy, some Persona's, and SMT of course).

  20. This is great. I love the personality they gave to the character motions, especially critical hit and victory poses.

Nohr is the most vanilla to me, probably because it's full of returning classes. I don't dislike any of them, but no particular standouts either. Except that critical hit animation for Sorcerer. Not-Owain looks so boss floating there. Like that would sell me on the entire version if I wasn't committing to both.

Hoshido is divisive, it has a lot I really really love (like the Pheonix rider, Puppeteer, Blacksmith, and Mountain Preist) but also a lot I really don't like at all (Truebowman's bow just looks too silly for me, Weaponmaster is VERY plain for a promoted class, and despite culture I don't like the flag on the Truelance). Don't care for the poses some of them strike either, especially when it looks like they are doing squats (but again, sometimes it works like the kick in the Trueblade's attack or Mountain Preists little war dance).

I don't know, Hoshido is just dividing me. Like, I'm glad they took all these big design risks and went full boar on the Feudal-Japan look for all it's worth, and I loved it so much when it works. But when it fails it just fails hard for me.
