  1. I'm still at Chapter 9, grinding levels and supports and rings before the big event in 10. I'm trying to give everyone a fair chance since I made beasts out of everyone I could in Awakening, Fates, and Three Houses. I've forged and engraved my F!Alear's sword so she's actually doing pretty well. She also got a few Strength levels.

Best: I'm not sure I have any units I'd consider this tier yet. Everyone's a WIP. Shout out to Louis being a great tank, though.

Disappointing: Alfred not leveling Speed, as so many have mentioned. He does great damage, though. Boucheron is having issues with hitting, so I'm trying to get enough SP to slap Hit + 10 on him. Etie has great offensive capability, but she's so fragile right now. As for mages, I'm not sure if I'm going to keep Clanne even though I like him. Celine is not leveling as good as I'd like either. Sigh. I'm just going to keep working on them.

Worst: Don't have anyone on this tier yet, thankfully.

Strangely enough I find random skirmish battles the hardest of them. The stages have a certain script, an ebb and flow to them. You just have to know what you're doing.

But most skirmishes just throw you in a position where you're surrounded by multiple waves of enemies on all sides who are all stronger than your units are, meaning that no matter how good you play you'll eventually be swarmed to death by the horde. Perhaps not if you take a team consisting solely of all your A listers, but the entire point of skirmish is to train the units that lag behind, something that's kinda impossible if they perpetually risk getting swarmed by much stronger opponents and killed off.

This. Sometimes I get decent skirmishes, other times I get ones that really want me to bring my A Team...when the point of skirmishes to grind your lower leveled units. Ugh. I'm currently at Chapter 9, though haven't started it. I'm playing on Normal/Casual. Chapter 8 was pretty rough, but I didn't lose any units or have to restart. Looking forward to future chapters!

  3. Norma/Casual for the first playthrough. Might do Hard afterward.

Does Normal/Hard have the feature where bosses have to be beaten twice? Because that's something that makes them a lot more threatening. Especially since all the bosses have been movers so far.

Yes. I'm playing Normal and have gotten to Chapter 7. I have fought two bosses with this feature already.

I will like to stress that most Game Journalists, despite writing for a living, are not writers. I honestly don't trust their judgement on any kind of character dissection.

I'm pretty sure no one will be as deep as the average Three Houses character, but TH had the benefit of having a lot of time and dialogue with units, and a built-in way to showcase development with them. The worst these guys could be is Awakening characters, who I know for a fact the same journos never complained about despite being as shallow and quite annoying as they believe the Engage cast is.

oh and most journos kind of hate JRPGs by default. This is not a secret, they never put a fan of the genre in these previews.

As someone who writes, I have to thank you for pointing this out. A lot of game journalists, and journalists in general, don't actually know how to write well (I see so many typos, grammatical errors, and wonky sentences in news articles!!!) or do character analysis. I'm not expecting Three Houses characters, but I'm also not expecting anything as bad as a lot of these reviews say. I take video game reviews with a grain of salt nowadays. I especially don't trust IGN.

We've heard so many conflicting reports about this at this point that I'm just not gonna trust any of their opinions and judge when I play myself

I will be doing the same. Previews and reviews are great and all, but many of them seem conflicting and I'd rather just play the game myself to see whether I enjoy it or not. From what it looks and sounds like, I probably will.

  6. I was able to preorder the Divine Edition from Walmart online yesterday! Thank goodness they had some more. I really want the artbook. I got the limited edition for Three Houses and really appreciated the artbook. I hope we get Twitter posts for every character. Please! I also like Pikazo's style!

  7. I can't say anything for which Emblems I'd give to characters yet, but I do have a general idea of who I want to use as a main team. I will definitely give all the royals a go, but I do have my faves. I typically end up using every unit at some point.

Alear (F) - While I like both designs, I want to play as my own gender first. Might give her Marth. Dunno yet.

Alfred - I LOVE his design. As someone who has studied historical clothing (and history in general) in extensive detail, some of the actually accurate things in his outfit that are from the 1500s, 1600s, and 1700s make me very happy. The ruff, the poufy Renaissance and Early Baroque breeches, the stockings, the heeled shoes... Yes. I would nitpick his "cravat" (actually looks more like a jabot, a completely different type of neckwear) but costumes usually get that wrong. As far as I can tell, only M!Alear has an accurate cravat. Will see in game if there are more because some of the portraits and artwork make it hard to tell.

Celine - Princess kicking ass in a dress? Yes. Gimme.

Merrin - Great design and class concept. I don't care if Wolf Knight turns out bad for some reason.

Amber - Hot man? Check. Calvary? Check. Spear user? Check.

Ivy - FLYING MAGE. Also heard she's voiced by Rhea's VA. YESSSSS.

Vander - Jagen, badass paladin, cool old man.

Clanne - Early mage, nice design.

Framme - A healer that can punch people!? Gimme.

    Pandreo - Healer. Hot priest.

    Panette - Berserker lady? OOOO.

Seadall - Male dancer? Hell yeah.

Rosado - I like dragon riders, okay? Flying units are fun.

Chloe - Another flying unit 🙂

Etie - Need someone to shoot fliers. Also cute design.

Alcryst - Archer Prince, need I say more? I liked Takumi in Fates Revelation and Birthright.

Fogado - Cool design and another archer I can kill stuff with.

  8. Okay, just saw the trailer. There is a lot of unpack here and I'm pretty satisfied with what was shown. I still have my fingers crossed that Alear will get a dragon form and it will be relevent to the plot of the game. Please don't be another Corrin.

It would especially be cool if the dragon form had something similar to the monster mechanics from Three Houses: taking up multiple tiles, barriers, a special AoE attack; stuff like that. I know it's unlikely, and I'm not asking for something identical to the monster mechanics, but I would just like for the transformation mechanic to be a real game-changer and not just essentially another weapon.

Oh, I would really love something like this. They probably won't, but I can hope! I definitely wanted a playable dragon or monster unit in 3H that utilized those mechanics, but alas, enemy only stuff. Having the player be able to do something like that would provide more strategic options.

  10. Daggers and FoW being back are okay. More variety for weapons and maps. I like Celine so far, although the top of her dress is kinda weird and revealing, but oh well. She looks like she'll be one of my favorites for now. Every time I watch these clips, I am reminded of how fluid this game is and I love it. The animations have been pretty good so far!

  11. I'm really fond of Alear so far. The designs are so outrageous that I find them cute. As I've said on other threads, I hope Alear being a dragon is actually relevant to the overall plot, unlike poor Corrin, whose transformation was only plot relevant for one chapter (and Revelation Route, kinda).

Design-wise, Alear falls pretty hard into the "so bad, it's good" camp for me, to the point I hope there is some customization to make them look even more ridiculous. And hey, I'll take some dumb looking hair over Corrins thigh windows or whatever the hell Female Byleth was wearing.

The "thousand year old divine dragon" schtick has me concerned because we got avatar worship over less notable setups. At the same time, avatar worship and similar issues has been a constant critique of previous games, so I hope the writers address it this time around. The story so far seems straightforward enough that I hope they either have some neat twists in there or just have fun with Alear being a dragon.

Speaking of which, if the game's tone leans towards the lighthearted side, please for the love of God, have fun with the protagonist being a dragon and let me choose how the comedy plays out! If Alear learns how to breath fire, let us choose whether they're terrified about puking up flames or if they think that's awesome or if their first thought is "I can make s'mores on the go!" or something like that. If they grow wings want to practice how to fly, let us pick if they jump off something comically small or comically large or just see it as an excuse to jump on the bed without judgement or some other silliness. Allow us to decide if Alear finds having a tail or claws or sharp teeth to be ugly or badass or a mild annoyance or whatever. I am willing to forgive some conversations ultimately going nowhere if they're incredibly entertaining to go through.

Yes! I also hate F!Corrin's thigh windows and F!Byleth's entire outfit, so F!Alear is an improvement. Gimme crazy hair over stupid fanservicey designs any day. I hope they balance the avatar worship so it's not as bad as Fates. I would like to see some moments where Alear discusses being a dragon and the player has dialogue options. Even if the story ends up being fairly serious, some humor is not a bad thing.

  12. I'm one of the few who actually likes the Alear designs. They are so so absurd that they're charming to me. I also like Céline's design. Her butterfly accessories are cute. Since she has a crown, my theory is that she is royalty from one of the four nations. Maybe related to Alfred? Time will tell.

  13. I would love to see more dragons and beast units. They are an important part of FE. Most games revolve around dragons, so not having a playable manakete unit would be very odd.

That mysterious girl we see in the trailer by the tree and in the centre of the boxart gives off manakete vibes. Maybe once Alear promotes/after a story event, they'll also be able to transform into their dragon form, hopefully anyways.

Would also love to see a beast unit return, especially seeing as both Awakening and Fates had them and Engage seems to be closer to them than it is to Three Houses.

I am also willing to bet that the girl by the tree is a dragon. I seriously hope that Alear does get a transformation. What would be the point of making the Avatar a dragon but not giving them the ability to transform (unless for plot)?

I could never agree with the deserve idea. If you're going to market the game with three distinct routes, treat them right or don't rep them at all. Pretty much shoving Edelgard to the stage and ignoring the other two is punishing numerous groups who didn't prefer or play Black Eagles. And alienating players in a huge way like that goes against Intsys' entire design philosophy. Stick to Byleth especially when we spend the entire game through Byleth with the theme song also being directed to Byleth as well.

Byleth reps all factions even the Church. It's foolish not to choose Byleth and prioritize route fairness.

All of this. I love Edelgard, Dimitri, Claude, and Rhea. But none of them represent all the routes. Byleth does. I hope the other four will be DLC, but Byleth is the correct choice as the 3H representative. Intsys purposefully avoided a golden or canon route for 3H. There is no reason for them to shove one of the faction leaders at us, trying to claim one route is canon over the others. They are all equally valid.
