I also would like it if he was removed as a deployable unit and Roy obtained the Convoy option. That would remove the bait option he adds in some maps, but it would free up a slot in maps where you plan to buy a lot.

You don't need to deploy Merlinus to send items that don't fit in your inventory to the convoy. You only need to deploy him to access the convoy during battles.

  2. Support conversations don't really stick with me for very long, so I don't think I can pick a favorite.  With that said, I just got Kent and Sain's B support in my current playthrough of FE7, and that may have been my favorite so far in that game.  It's not super deep or anything, but I think Kent and Sain's interactions are one of the most entertaining parts of Blazing Sword.  I get the sense that Sain's comments on Lyn's beauty and kindness actually come from a genuine place.  Even still, he stays true to his character, mocking Kent and basically just acting like an ass about his "vast library of experience with women."  I just really appreciated this support since Kent and Sain really take a back seat in Eliwood's story, and this interaction is a nice callback to their interactions during Lyn's tale.

Not sure how unpopular this is, if it all, but I hate con and weight. I've always thought it was unnecessary, and that the games could live without it, as shown in Awakening and Fates. If it were to stay in the games, I'd prefer it be like the way it is in SoV, where it just subtracts speed. Maybe it's because I never even tried to understand how it worked. But whatever happened, I ended up hating weight and con.

Oh, also I love Faye. I think she's adorable.

If you never bothered to understand it, how can you be so sure it was a bad system? I thought Con was a great idea; it only makes sense that a huge knight in armor can more effectively wield a heavy lance than a skinny Pegasus Knight.

Anyone who's beaten the game and has gotten to Act 6 probably knows about the Thabes Labyrinth. Just a question, has anyone who plays on Hard/Classic gotten to the end? I'm on the 8th floor (I think there's 10 total), but the enemy stats are so ridiculous that no one on my team can withstand more than a round or two of combat, and I just got screwed hard with 3 groups at once. There are 4 fire dragons and a shit ton of other enemy types. I know this is supposed to be the penultimate dungeon, with the whole point of it being stupidly hard, but this isn't even fair or funny at this point. We're talking enemies with stats being around 25-35 on average, meaning that anyone who wasn't subject to the Dread Fighter grinding cycle or someone who got stupidly lucky with their level-ups have 0 chance of surviving. I'm starting to think the best thing to do at this point is just run past everything in a perfect run and pray to whatever deity you believe in that you don't get stuck in combat.

I'm sorry, but it's just a pet peeve of mine when people misuse "penultimate." The word means "second-to-last."

"Ultimate" means final. Thabes labyrinth is the *ultimate* dungeon.

Fair enough. I think most of those roles can reasonably fit into a single character, but it wasn't a perfectly executed concept.

I think a lot of people are hoping for a non-main character Avatar just because they don't have faith in IS's ability to write one. The avatars are pre-established characters that you can customize so there shouldn't be a problem of writing a good one if you can do that for a main character that you can't customize. Player worship isn't integral to the avatar.

You fool, now everyone will know Fire Emblem is a shameless dating simulator for weaboos!

Part of the reason I'm not a fan of the Avatar as a main character is that I don't like customizing and naming my own character and then having their personality completely out of my hands. I like the idea of an Avatar as a villager whose base stats and growths can be influenced by the player, but who is otherwise a silent side character. The avatar doesn't need to be special.

I'm curious as to what you think "too important to the plot" means. Why was it bad that Robin is G***a? Had Chrom been G***a instead, would that be fine?

I think Robin being you know who works in the context of Awakening's story, but as a personal preference I wouldn't want another avatar being as important to the plot, especially after Corrin.

  7. I like the 3DS games, especially Conquest, but I hope they try something new. I'm fairly confident this will happen, as Nintendo has historically tried new things on each new console with pretty much all of their series.

I'm sure the new game will keep elements of the 3DS games, but I hope they change it up a lot. For one, I'd love is pair-up were removed. As they said in the Echoes trailer, "such pillars of modern warfare... have no place on the battlefield."

But in addition to removing certain 3DS features, I hope they introduce a new mechanic that we haven't seen before, like how GBA introduced supports and 3DA introduced pair-up. I love when series try something new, even if it ends up not being the best feature in the world.

I agree. I think that if you did an avatar in the way that Robin was done before they started taking center stage it would work out perfectly fine. I also think this was the perfect game to do that with for the same reason you said.  I don't really mind that it didn't happen though and completely understand why it didn't being a remake. Plus I would rather never have an avatar again then have Corrin or anything like them.

I did also love how Robin's role as the tactician tied in with being the Avatar and how they even played into it with some lines. I think they were a nearly perfect re implementation of the idea of the Tactician from FE7 (which was lame and lackluster).

I have to disagree with you about Robin being well executed. He was certainly better than Corrin, but that's a low bar to clear. Robin was still far too important to the main story, being G***a and all.

If they do an Avatar again, they really do need to be a side character.

Seeing as how it's a remake I kinda doubt it especially since they didn't show anything like that when it's just 4 months away. But then again Heroes of Light and Shadow did so it's possible. I wouldn't really care either way, but I suppose I'll vote yes just because I'm not entirely against it.

I voted no, but I think that out of all the FE games, Gaiden is the one that could most naturally incorporate an Avatar. I like the idea of an Avatar that isn't a main character, but still has supports and is a decent unit.

In Garden, we have the group of villagers you recruit at the beginning (Grey, Cliff, etc.). I think it would actually work pretty well to have one of the villagers be an Avatar character. That way, you're Avatar is there from the beginning but not particularly vital to the story.

Said Avatar could have supports with the other villagers, but not with more important plot characters.

I think that if an avatar were to be added, that would be the best way to go about it.

  11. To be honest, I think you may be out of luck. It's called the "Limited" edition for a reason. AFAIK, in-store pre-orders are the easiest way to get limited items like that — that's the only way I was able to pre-order my copy — but from what you've said and what people I know in real life have said, stores seem to be all out, unfortunately. The price on eBay may fall once the game is actually out, but I think you're just gonna have to wait and see.

The sales of this game will definitely be telling of how the series will probably sell going forward, but I don't think you need to be FE-obsessed to buy it. Awakening and Fates introduced this series to a lot of people, and even people who were casually enjoying those games may choose to pick this one up, because, hey. It's more Fire Emblem.

I don't think people finishing all versions of Fates will be the only people considering this game. To some degree, I suspect there was a lot of burnout in Fates. While the mechanics were good and it was a good game, it was like, 90 hours of the EXACT same game mechanics, playing through the same story multiple times in different ways. Echoes, on the other hand, offers a new(Old) gameplay experience. New characters, new story, new everything, compared to Awakening and Fates.

If people are still super attached to Awakening like your friend, I think they're in the minority. Fates sold pretty close, so I don't think there are that many people who have yet to get over Awakening.

Fates actually sold more than awakening.

Gaiden is the only instalment where Anna's not present. What do you think, will they (or should they) add her to the remake?
She's pretty much the series mascot, it'd be nice to see her return in some capacity, not necessarily as a playable unit.

To be honest, I don't really think she's THE mascot. Marth fills that roll more appropriately. Anna is more of a staple.

This is tough; most of my favourite characters are on the Hoshidan side, but Conquest has the best gameplay by far. Revelation especially is just very boring to play. However, I feel as if the inter-country supports in Revelation are some of the best examples of writing in the game.

So I would answer Conquest, although on re-plays I skip all the cut-scenes and pay zero attention to the story.

Interesting. I actually found Conquest to have more interesting, or at least more likable, characters. I loved Arthur and Leo and Elise, in particular. However, Birthrights story overall was far better.

In the end, though, I have to say Conquest was my favorite path. I definitely agree with you that the gameplay is far better. I haven't played Revelations, so I can't speak to that, but Birthright never really challenged me. I only lost one unit the entire game and didn't bother resetting, since the levels are such a bore for the most part. Conquest on the other hand has levels that feel new and exciting each time for the most part. While there are definitely some bummer chapters  like the Opera House and the Kitsune Hamlet, the vast majority of chapters are genuinely challenging with unique objectives.
