  1. Just as a quick comment: indoor plumbing wasn't widespread in Europe until the LATE 19TH CENTURY. Like, train travel was yesterday's news but toilets were a marvel.

Another really curious QUIRK of indoor plumbing is people took up the technology slowly because the people who benefitted most from it were NOT the people footing the bills to install the new pipes. Like, if someone says to you, "Hey, would you like to spend a HUGE chunk of money refurbishing your home--it will be very expensive and maybe smelly--or would you like to continue paying a peasant literal pennies to keep pumping your water outside/carrying away your poop?"

If you worked in the kitchen or the staff of a large house, of COURSE you'd see the benefit! Your daily labor would be much easier. But if you worked in the kitchen or the staff, you weren't making decisions about renovation.

Like, it wasn't even a hard question for most wealthy people! It was easier and cheaper to keep paying employees. It would have been difficult and expensive to install plumbing. So they didn't.

On thinking it over, I have a suspicion the buff won't trigger if Ninian doesn't get a chance to attack (i.e. is attacked at range without Distant Counter) because other weapon-based effects only occur if the user attacks or counterattacks (Rogue Dagger immediately comes to mind).

A recent reddit thread confirmed this. Someone who'd tried it posted.

  3. I'm not sure what the legal solution should be, but I've read too many cases of gamblers who try to remove themselves from temptation (going so far as to move so that the casinos they patronize don't know their address, change phone numbers ditto) & a chance encounter/bad day (read one about an addict who went back to a casino after a painful funeral...) pushes them back over the edge and voila, one last binge later they're ruined.

i strictly buy the $5 orb packs and I buy every other month max, on principle--I'll pay to keep the servers up and I'll chip in for a cute well made game but I am not dropping cash for a particular character, etc, or to pull.

it's not that hard for me to make & stick by limits but that's part of what makes me wonder if gambling can truly be an addiction; there's something going on there that doesn't happen to me, that isn't part of my make-up.

personal responsibility is important but it's a cruel thing to preach to addicts.

  4. I just got Hinoka & now I'm facing a familiar dilemma.

She's got a unique skill I'd like to pass on & an iffy IV (and I've got a great Cordelia) but I don't want to sacrifice my only copy of a character for inheritance.

I have the same issue with Mathilda--I pulled a -ATK copy at 5 stars. She's frustrating to use, but I don't want to patch up her weaknesses with SI because there's a good chance I'll turn her into fodder eventually (I do have a couple 4 star Mathildas...) so instead she just sits there, doing nothing.

I'm leveling this Hinoka just to see what she's like & i keep thinking, "she'd work better if I inherited this or that..." but if I'm just going to sacrifice her down the line...

What do you guys do in thos situation? Other than dither endlessly...

  5. Did two full pulls, so ten orbs. Ended up with...

5 star: Abel (+HP/-DEF), Hinoka (+HP/-DEF), Klein (neutral)

4 star: Sophia, Nino x 2, Bartre, Cherche, Felicia

    3 star: Gordin

I guess this qualifies as REALLY lucky? Three five stars with IVs that aren't great but aren't disastrous (no ATK or SPD banes), none of them duplicates. I kinda needed good blues.

I was probably going to promote a couple of blues (Still haven't 5 starred Camus) but now I might split it, do at least one green. In any case, those were all the orbs I've allotted for this banner so high five to everyone who got a focus unit. Elincia seems pretty neat.

  6. The new units look great but after the past couple of months of pulling, I'm going to focus energy on units that I can promote with feathers rather than pinning my hopes on pulling focus units.

IS has been generous with feathers and you can promote the colors/types you need, filling gaps in your collection, rather than waiting for luck to do the job.

What does this have with sorting by character’s name?

It's the easiest way I've found of grouping all copies of a unit together in a way that's really easy to locate. Type/weapon type means that all the red tomes are together in one spot so if you're wondering, say, 'how many tharjas do I have' you can scroll to the red tomes and all your Tharjas will be there in a row, no matter their level or rarity.

I mean, yes, it would also be great to sort by name! I don't mean to suggest that would be bad. Just that type --> weapon type --> origin is my workaround.

Draw Back or Reposition on Brave Lyn? I'll use her on a Horse Emblem team along with any combination of Swap Xander, Repo Camus, Draw Back Rein, Draw Back Cecilia, or a healer. Typically I ran Draw Back on ranged units, but I don't always use it that often, and I was wondering if Reposition might be better for her.

I like to give similar types of heroes similar movement assists; i.e. all my mages get draw back. Fliers get reposition. Armors get pivot.

I've made a few exceptions, but a systematic approach really helps.

But I repeat, with the introduction of Brave Roy who would you say will become the preferred cav for the red spot? Roy or Xander?

I pulled a Luke recently & with Lyn on my roster I've been thinking of building a second cav team.

I imagine that's the more likely answer.

I got a +atk -spd Innes and I was wondering if he's salvageable with those IVs and if so, which skills would be best for him? I'd rather keep Nidhogg as his weapon because I don't have 20k feathers to get brave bow+

I got a +HP/-SPD Innes and he's great. I'm sure he'd be better with a different IV, but I can use him to bait mages & very few of them survive the encounter. Build him up, unless you've got tons of great five star archers I'm sure you'll be glad you did.

  11. Finally pulled my first of the Brave heroes, a Brave Ike. Now that I've successfully targeted and pulled two much-desired heroes, I'm starting to get a sense of what's required.

    1. Save up orbs for at least a few weeks.

    2. Spend all your orbs.

    3. Get nothing.

    4. Continue to collect orbs, sniping whenever you collect an amount that feels "safe", even though it pains you to spend 5 orbs for a single troop. Suck up all the lame 3 star pulls.

    5. Repeat step 4 until the banner ends or you get your troop.

My Ike is +ATK & -SPD though, and I followed that up by grabbing a free neutral Brave Lyn so now I feel lucky and extremely glad to be done with that banner.

  12. Sigh. I spent all my orbs on my first failed attempt at a Brave Hero but scraped enough together from the reset to try again &, again, no luck. Here's a list of the heroes I've gotten since the Valter battle started:

    5 star: Luke

4 star: Jagen, Catria, Nino (x3), Draug, Seliph (new!), Mae (new!), A!Tiki, Jeorge, Clarine (x2), Effie, Hana, Peri (new! x2), Boey (x2), Athena (new! Great IVs!), Merric (x2), Serra, Azama, Tharja, Wrys, Fae (new!), Barst, Jakob (new!),

3 star: Subaki (x3), Gwen, Gunter, Donnel (x2), Felicia, F!Corrin (new! -- last 3 star I didn't have), Palla, A!Tiki, Shanna, Hinata, Azama, Sully, Hana.

And hey, there's some great skill fodder here. A healthy handful of new units, some of which I'm excited to play around with (the Fae and Corrin have been a long time coming...). But for the most part this is... not great, right? I mean, it feels pretty lame.

    From 45 units, I got 1 5 star, 28 4 stars and 16 3 stars.

I'll give it at least one other go but really, pulling is my LEAST favorite part of the game.

  13. I've had the weirdest time with pulling over the past month or so.

On the one hand, I sank a fair number of orbs into each of the summer banners, did a full pull on each of the new gauntlet banners, 100 orbs on the CYL & not a single focus unit from the lot (and only one 5 star this week, from a ~140 orb spree.)

On the other hand, I went all out on hero fest & sniped until I got Ninian, the unit I wanted most, showed up (after about 100 orbs...), I've picked up a +ATK Reinhardt, my first Hector & a Linde, and I got Innes as my free pull on the Sacred Stones banner (then stopped.)

I can't say I've had bad luck. The highs and the lows sure do balance out.

No, my problem is not "this letter doesn't exist". My problem is "this letter makes the wrong sound" that is the problem of exchanging words between two languages using the same character base for their writing system.

The problem with "rendezvous" in the fact that in English, three of those letters don't normally make the same sound as they do in the word ("e" doesn't normally make the "ah" sound, "z" is normally not silent, "s" is normally not silent). Other languages that are not English tend to either change the spelling of loan words to keep the pronunciation or change the pronunciation of loan words to keep their spelling. English keeps both the spelling and pronunciation of loan words (as well as words from older versions of the language that made less sense) even if they don't follow any of the patterns that normally exist in the language, which results in all of the dumb shit that the language does.

As an example (that doesn't use the Latin character set), Japanese borrows a lot of words from Chinese (because the Chinese character set is a subset of the Japanese character set) and changes the pronunciations of the words to match the pronunciation of the characters in Japanese. There are a few esoteric loan words from Chinese that use different pronunciations that more closely resemble the Chinese pronunciations (a good example is most of the terminology in mahjong), but those are not in general use.

Of particular note, even proper nouns change their pronunciation between Chinese and Japanese to remain in line with the borrowing language's pronunciation. For example, Sun Yat-sen's name is pronounced the way the characters in his name are pronounced in Mandarin ("ee-shyan"), Cantonese ("yuht-seen"), and Japanese ("ees-sen") in those languages rather than keeping the same pronunciation in all three.

I mean--that's just English. It's a magpie of a language, always borrowing pretty shinies from somewhere else. Not really the best language for rules and structure in general.

  15. 19 minutes ago, Ice Dragon said:

Not too hard for anyone who reasonably knows both languages. Hell, you can even just get one guy who knows the first language to pronounce the word slowly and the other guy who knows the second language to write down what they hear.

Or, you know, you can be lazy and just copy the word down letter-for-letter and call it a day because French and German use the exact same character set. Modern English already does this, and it's the dumbest thing ever (it's where we get shitty spelling of "rendezvous" from).

You transliterate between alphabets; French and German both use the Roman alphabet. Different from the issue of when spelling really became standardized--which is fairly recent, obviously, during the 19th century.

Transliterating between alphabets really does require linguistics experts to properly codify. When letters that exist in one language don't exist in another, people will come up with all kinds of approximations & it can get confusing.

Also not sure why you have a problem with rendezvous? The spelling is exactly the same in French, it's just two words instead of one.

I'm guessing written languages were really messy back then? Or maybe it's something like y'know how people from different parts of the world have to spell their name in different languages? Possibly something like that. With Seamus, for example, people have written it as Shaymus and Shamus. Or Li, Lee, Yi, etc.

I think there's another example or explanation where one word ends up being rendered in different ways. Perhaps it's because of missing or, more appropriate, nontransferable sounds.

That or the writer couldn't remember the damn sword's name and came up with something that remotely sounded similar.

When you try to spell out words in a foreign alphabet, it's called "transliteration". So if you spell out Arabic words in English letters, English words in Japanese syllables, etc. Transliteration can be standardized but I doubt even most students whospend time studying a foreign language would know where to go to find the best guides for it.

  17. Did a single free pull on the new Sacred Stones banner.

    Got Innes.

He was the one I wanted (why else pick colorless?) so I'm delighted. Wish I could check his IV. I want to know his nature before I level him.

Edit: Looks like he's +HP/-SPD. So I got unlucky... hopefully SI can fix that. Right now I only have one other 5 star archer & it's a -ATK Faye. So I've got the motivation to work with a less than ideal IV here.

So... my quest for Summer Corrin just netted me a Linde. Unexpected and not who I was aiming for, but I'm not going to complain.

She's -Atk +Res, though. Is that bad? I'm not really sure what build to use with her... if I gave her a -blade tome, I guess that Attack wouldn't make much of a difference, especially if I give her some skill to enhance her Speed.

I have a -Spd +HP Bride Caeda I never outfitted properly too. That bane seems to hurt her more, though, since Speed is her strength...

This exact thing just happened to me--the Linde I got instead of Corrin is -ATK/+DEF. I've leveled her up to 40 and started giving her skills.

She's noticeably weaker than my best mages but I gave her the breath of life C skill, which pairs really well with Aura--she can do a lot of healing pretty quickly. Add Fury and Dragon Fang and she's fragile but still strong enough to score plenty of kills, even if she doesn't sweep the board in a few turns like Reinhardt.

I say give her a try.

  19. TT orbs + Cecilia & Lilina battle orbs = one last try at hero fest &...

    I got Ninian!

That was excruciating. It took tons of saving orbs, it was mostly disappointing, but it's also the first time i've successfully pulled a specific, much-desired focus unit. (And she's -HP/+ATK, too.)

Glad that's over. Back to saving.
