  1. FE6 through FE10 are consistently fantastic across all games, especially Sacred Stones and Path of Radiance. I'd pick Tellius as the overall best, and the GBA translates artstyles so beautifully.

However, I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a soft spot for Engage, especially the Emblems. I love how vibrant all the colors are, and I feel it's very reminiscent of the GBA era in that regard.

Not an inherent trend to media in itself, but the great majority of fans and the degree to which headcanons and the actually presented media itself are being intermixed. I made a very angry comment about something similar in the General Unpopular Opinions thread.

my headcanon is that you're wrong

I think I kinda feel this, too, especially when headcanons I read about actively go against established canon or rules. I don't mind the stuff that's actually plausible, or the stuff I can easily dismiss, but the incorrect stuff that's so widespread to the point that it's treated as fact is what bothers me (basically popular headcanon that's actually just misinformation). If I understand what you're saying correctly, I do believe I'm in the same boat.

For me, the annoying thing about FF7R is that, as a complete newcomer, I just wanted a remake of FF7, and that's what FF7Remake was marketed as being. Instead, all the multiverse stuff meant that the game may as well have thrown up a big neon sign saying, "Come back after you've played FF7!"

I saw a post on Twitter the other day explaining how a common theme among Final Fantasy games is defying fate (the exception being XV if you don't count alternate endings). Remake does exactly this, but in regards to defying the story of the original game (in a very obvious manner).

  3. If Young Link were to theoretically return, he should absolutely be updated to his Majora's Mask design... which isn't any different from Ocarina of Time, but he'd have the Hero's Shield and new Kokiri Sword, and so his new final smash would (hopefully) be Fierce Deity as a transformation smash. However, since they've gone the route of more cinematic final smashes, I imagine it'd be some kind of transformation rush instead, with Link attacking as a Deku, Goron, Zora, and then Fierce Deity (so basically a fancier Triforce Slash).

I think the only other characters that I have a venerated interest in seeing a new final smash would be the Belmonts (assuming they come back). Grand Cross as it is now is fine enough, but to move it away from a cinematic smash, I'd love to see them do Grand Cross how Julius does it in Aria of Sorrow, which would make the whole stage shake and draw in enemies while the Belmont is stationary (kind of like a cross between PK Starstorm and Zero Laser, but aimed upwards).

  4. Hell yeah, I love this question. I don't really have a huge list of favorites, and I'm sure I could certainly add to that list, but to keep it simple, Lapras and Espeon are my top two, and I'd say Primarina is my favorite starter (I absolutely love its cry).

The quote that comes with this card is  "I am Wrys, a humble hero. I have no time to spare on healing my enemies - only on burying them."

I'm not sure what's more frightening; the fact that this exists, or the fact that there's a legitimate chance for him to show up in Heroes.

    Cipher died too soon, man.

  6. Any fix or maintenance, big or small, is a good fix imo, so thank you for what you do

Ah, there goes my hope. But, yeah, it was pretty extreme a few days ago. I wonder why it's even happening, like...is it seriously making someone any money to be spewing out all this stuff by the novel full in a language the people of the site don't use?

If it's anything like I think it is, it's just a way to seek attention. Unfortunately for a forum site like this, we kinda have to give it attention to get it cleaned up, which just sucks.

Also, didn't the Oddity team had to change the name of their game to Oddity, getting rid of EarthBound connections/making it's own game, and as well as changing some of the assets from the EarthBound series to newer creations to avoid getting into trouble with Nintendo since we know that Nintendo has been taking down any Fan Projects that uses their IPs and for legal reasons as well?

Yeah, I remember from around the time of the rebrand, stuff like AM2R and Pokémon Uranium were DMCA'd by Nintendo, so I think the Oddity team decided to change everything related to Earthbound/Mother to avoid a takedown from Nintendo as a preventative measure. I honestly like the rebranded name Oddity better than Mother 4; I think it actually kind of keeps it in the spirit of Earthbound being the localized title for Mother 2, if that makes any sense. It's just a cool name for a standalone game.

Assuming it's a real game that will eventually come out one day, it also means that it has a legitimate shot at being on the Switch (or whatever Nintendo's next console is).

  8. I think Anna would be a great character to have come back in some form. Maybe as a secret merchant or something if she isn't a playable unit.

Valbar, Kamui, and Leon would be funny. There was that April Fool's joke with them being featured in a title called Fire Emblem: Battle of Revolution. If that game ever seriously happens, then they're basically a shoo-in.

Ike (and potentially Soren/Ranulf, too) also always has a chance to show up again in some capacity (that isn't amiibo or emblem locked) given his ending in Radiant Dawn. It may not have happened (yet), and the closest we've gotten to something like that is Priam, but it'd be cool for him to show up again in the flesh even if just as a cameo.

As for Mother 4, I think I remember Shigesato Itoi himself mentioning that he intended to finish this with M3. Did he change his mind on that one?

No, you're right, I think Mother 3 was more or less always meant to be the last one.

There's actually 2 different Mother 4's, both of which are fan projects. The first one has been rebranded as Oddity, and it's arguable if it's actually ever coming out. They did release an absolutely killer soundtrack for it, though. If you ever get a chance, definitely listen to it because it's phenomenal (and the only real thing for the game that's been officially released, lol).

The second one I know less about, but it may actually (hopefully) have a decent shot in releasing in a playable format. There's a trailer for it here.

At the end of the day, though, they're more just concepts than anything else.

  10. I don't know where to begin with how much I adore this series. I'm not as much of a die-hard as I could be, but Mother 3 is easily my favorite game of all time, and one of the extremely few games that's made me shed a tear. A friend of mine back in middle school had introduced me to the series and Team Fortress 2, and it's almost surreal how well they all stand against the test of time (except for maybe Earthbound Zero/Beginnings, but I haven't played it in forever, so that's an iffy maybe).

I also remember the Pollyanna tribute animation that came out all that time ago, and it was so well done that my middle school brain loved everything about it. One of my teachers had a "Fun Video Friday" every week, and she took suggestions from the students. I was very adamant about sharing that tribute video to the point that I suggested it every week, but she was pretty hesitant about it. She did eventually show it, and she only played it up until the Kraken showed up if I remember right, but I was happy that I was able to share it at all with other kids my age.

It was also super exciting when Chuggaconroy announced that he was remaking his Earthbound Let's Play, which was a few years ago now. Being able to go through that game again with his commentary and video quality was such a treat, and learning all the new things about the game that I had never known before was awesome (which I think he made a point about there always seemingly being something new to find every time you play the game again). Of course, it was an absolute shame as a long-time viewer to see him go out the way he did; there were some moments during his Black 2/White 2 Let's Play that stood out as pretty sus, but I gave it a tentative pass thinking that's just him being who he is. After everything that came out about him, it all makes sense in hindsight now.

At the very least, one thing I'm still very much still looking forward to is the Mother 4 fan project. Can't wait for Winter 2014!

But your link to (presumably) Maiden's mug is broken. I can't tell if that's ironic, tragic or both.

It is indeed the Maiden. I may just leave it like that if you can't see it, lol.

You've also contractually obligated yourself to now researching who Emblem Lucina's mother is.

    Oh no.

I think I would actually like to do that, thanks for the idea! It might not be a bad idea to see what other useless trivia I can look into for Emblems.

How does reclassing work for the Amiibo units? Because everyone, even the generic capturable enemies I think, have at least one reclass except Candace for model reasons (but even she can go dark flier etc though the results are funky). Though maybe the capturable enemies can only reclass into their alternative promotion.

Amiibo units can't reclass at all, funnily enough. I think I mentioned that, but the wording was probably a little funny. So Marth, for instance, can only be in the Lodestar class.

  12. I promise this is an interesting question.

Fire Emblem Fates came out during the amiibo fad Nintendo had going on after the release of Smash 4. As such, Fates was one of the games that had the (mis)fortune of added amiibo functionality, and if you scanned the amiibo released for the Fire Emblem characters featured in Smash 4, you could recruit Marth, Ike, Robin, and Lucina into your army in Fates as actual units. Marth and Ike are just kinda there, but Robin and Lucina actually provide an interesting case to look into, especially Lucina. And so I ask... who is the mother of amiibo Lucina?

The way I usually go about this kind of thing is to calculate growth rates and go from there, but with Awakening, there are modifiers, skills, and reclass inheritance to consider, too. Thankfully for me, amiibo are preconfigured plastic collectibles, so reclassing and skill inheritance aren't a worry this time around, so growths and mods are what we'll be using.

Also, just to get the obvious out of the way, amiibo Robin is either +Mag/-HP based on his modifiers, or +Res/-Spd based on his growths. For comparison:

    Spoiler

    Awakening Growths (+Res/-Spd)

    HP: 40% Str: 40% Mag: 40% Skl: 30% Spd: 30% Lck: 50% Def: 30% Res: 35%

    Fates Growths

    HP: 35% Str: 30% Mag: 40% Skl: 45% Spd: 30% Lck: 25% Def: 20% Res: 40%

    Awakening Mods (+Mag/-HP)

    Str: 0 Mag: +2 Skl: 0 Spd: 0 Lck: -1 Def: -1 Res: +1

    Fates Mods

    Str: -1 Mag: +3 Skl: 0 Spd: +2 Lck: -1 Def: -1 Res: +1

If anything, based on his gameplay in Smash, he'd probably be +Mag/-Spd.

    ~ ~ ~

Moving on to Lucina, she's a little easier to figure out since the math for her is more set in stone, which is to say I haven't included Robin as a potential mother for the sake of my own sanity.

I've taken some liberties in trying to ascertain the answers I seek; I've subtracted the +1 Modifier Bonus every Awakening child unit gets to balance out the numbers a little bit, and I've also subtracted any class growths that would be included in the totals. I've also miraculously discovered spreadsheets, so it's all in a nice, convenient format for your perusal. I've color coded the entries based on how they match to amiibo Lucina's base growths and mods.

Based on the data and my own "humble" and "objectively correct" opinion, the closest answer to who amiibo Lucina's mother would be is Olivia, confirming Chrom's true pairing as it was always meant to be.

...but deep in our hearts, we know who the true answer was all along...

Anyways, I hoped you enjoyed my incoherent rambling once more. Thank you.

Just some post-post thoughts... speaking of the maiden, I noticed in a couple places that Maiden!Lucina's growths are just a bunch of question marks? So have her growth rates seriously never been figured out after all this time? Or is the information outdated everywhere and no one's updated it? I mean... I'd assume since the maiden really has no bearing on Lucina as a unit (Lucina get's Chrom's mods with +1 to each stat, the typical bonus), she wouldn't factor into the growth formula; it'd just be (Chrom's Growths + Lucina's Base Growths)/2 + Class Growths just for that specific situation. I know I've got to be wrong on this, but I would love to figure it out.

  13. It's been slightly disappointing to see the steady decline in activity, but it's also nice to see that we still have plenty of regulars on here, too, so it's not all bad. We keep it alive.

Honestly though, the biggest loss we've had within the past year or so is the Night Forest theme. I don't think that's ever coming back.

I tried to find any other forum more active than here some time ago and I didn't have luck (if Reddit doesn't count, not sure if Gamefaqs is active nowadays too), the Ace Attorney forum is so dead that they spend weeks with no posts so i didn't even make an account there cause it's as good as dead. Maybe I'm just shit at looking up for forums, idk, but in any case, with SF being as it is (active and allows us to make topics not related to FE in case we wanna talk about other stuff) I gave up on looking for something else.

I wouldn't be surprised if this place survived the end of the universe, lol

  14. Not sure how "fluffy" this is, but I felt inspired for something else other than that one idea I had.

This is a story from before the events of Red Dead Redemption 2, which has spoilers regarding part of the main character's backstory that's briefly mentioned in "Archeology for Beginners" in Chapter 6 of the game's main story.

  15. Echoes are a fantastic idea, but I feel like it's difficult to quantify if it should be used in regards to other clone characters. You have your glorified palette swaps like Dark Samus and Richter whose differences are so insignificant that it's more or less down to personal preference which character you like more, so the distinction as an echo is fine. Then you have the characters that have just enough variation that they could be separate, but are still way too similar to their originals, like Chrom and Ken.

There are also all the clone characters like Roy, Young/Toon Link, Ganondorf, etc. I wouldn't count them as echoes since they have fundamentally different playstyles despite having the same or similar movesets to the originals. There's also characters like Lucas and Falco who take heavy inspiration from Ness and Fox respectively, but I would say that they're more like semi-clones.

If I were to rank characters based on how much of an echo they are, I'd probably go with something like...

    Spoiler

    Literal Palette Swaps

    • Alph
    • Daisy (I think I recall players finding her having a slightly different loot table in the game's files for her down special when Ultimate first came out, which was later patched)

    Glorified Palette Swaps

    • Dark Samus (she floats)
    • Richter (holy water does aura damage compared to Simon's fire damage)
    • Lucina (consistent damage across whole blade, but it really doesn't make that much of a difference)

    Echo

    • Chrom (different up special, consistent damage across whole blade)
    • Dark Pit (neutral special and side special variation)
    • Ken (literally the original echo fighter and probably the best implementation of it imo. I'd be inclined to say he's more of a clone than an echo though, honestly)

    Clone

    • Dr. Mario
    • Roy
    • Young/Toon Link
    • Ganondorf
    • Pichu
    • Pyra/Mythra (of each other, and they're in the same character slot, but I figured I'd throw them in)
    • Mewtwo (iyk, yk)

    Semi-Clone

    • Luigi
    • Falco
    • Wolf
    • Lucas
    • Isabelle

Also on a completely unrelated note, Hinduism. Yeah, like, the religion. What's that about? I only know the vaguest surface level stereotypes and very little about the core beliefs or philosophy. Which is a shame and a surprise considering it's something 15% of the human race believes in. I know it's most certainly out there and I'm just not looking in the right places for such media, but I kind of want earnest interest in major cultural touchstones of humanity as a whole to be at least a bit more present in world media.

For what it's worth, I suspect Fates was loosely based on the Mahabharata.

In it, you had two closely related families (cousins IIRC, each a group of five warrior siblings) who end up fighting a war over who's going to inherit the kingdom. The noble Pandavas and the evil Kuaravas. The "pause time and go to a sanctuary away from the fighting" might be based off Krishna's time freeze during the big battle. The story's MC, a young man named Arjuna, initially doesn't want to fight and kill people he knows, until Krishna gives him a pep talk and then an unrelated Hindu theology info dump. Finally, while India and Japan aren't the same, it's worth pointing out that Fates is the only FE game to ditch the pseudo-Medieval European setting in favor of an Eastern locale.

This reminds me of a reddit post from a couple of years ago that posits the summoner in FEH as some kind of Buddhist figure. It's actually a really interesting theory, I think.
