Gameplay wise, Conquest was an excelent throwback to classic FE games in terms of difficulty and resource management (No unlimited grinding and every bit of gold you get must be used wisely)

Story wise, probably birthright due to it being the least terrible of the 3. I liked the concept of Fates overall story, but the way it was implemented had alot of problems...

Up until I played Conquest, I was used to the easier games with lower difficulty and unlimited grinding options. I suppose that leaves me better prepared for the earlier FE games!

    I enjoyed Birthright the most.

Never have I felt more emotional  pain for an enemy unit than in Birthright. The whole Xander/Elise stuff brings out my feels every time.

Conquest just didn’t feel the same, mainly because I thought of them as Nohrian scum instead of siblings. While it didn’t give me quite as many feels, because A) Ryoma killed himself, Which Would have hurt more if Corrin killed him.B) Takumi was already dead by the time you fought him the final time.

I don’t feel either way about Revelations.

I mostly agree with you. I think the Conquest path was a selfish one for Corrin to choose because Nohr as you described, as scum, although I like the Nohrian characters more than the Hoshidan characters. I felt more engaged with the story than I did when playing Birthright, it's still a good game. I like the Hoshidan characters a lot as well, especially Takumi and Ryoma. In Gameplay-wise, I prefer Conquest on that. However, I prefer Birthright's story to Conquest just a tiny bit lesser than I liked the game previously mentioned (although it was extremely difficult for me to beat and Birthright was a lot easier).

I played Birthright first, then went to Conquest, and Revelation. That chapter with Xander and Elise came as a surprise to me and I think that it's the saddest chapter in Birthright. I just realized that I contradicted myself, so I fixed up this post.

Hoshido, easily. Nohr was the country that started hostilities and is responsible for there being a war in the first place. Hoshido prefers peace over war, and thus they won't fight unless provoked.

Nohr did a lot to provoke Hoshido into fighting, and now that I think about it, was it Nohr's fault that they were even in the war? All Hoshido wanted to was to live in peace while Garon wanted to conquer Hoshido.

Which Fire Emblem game is the #1 Best is a very difficult question to answer as a lot of that depends on how a paticular game resonates with a paticular player. As far as an introduction to the series goes I would recommend either Blazing Sword or Sacred Stones to a beginner. The Tellius games have a good story, some solid world building and some excellent game mechanics that I would like to see again. The Jugdrael games also have some good story telling and world building especially when considering when these games were made.

Thraccia has some very interesting ideas that I enjoy such as capturing enemies, looting weapons and items from them to sell etc. I have not finished Thraccia yet, but I am currently playing it and enjoying both the gameplay and story. Thraccia's difficulty mostly comes from not knowing what's coming, if you can prepare for X event it's a lot easier a similar thing is true of FE10. If you want money you need to take gear from enemies and sell it, the game does not just hand money out to you.

Ultimately I would say give every FE game a try at least once but which one is the best depends a lot on how that game resonates with a paticular player, though I would be partial to considering either the Tellius or the Jugdrael games as the best.

I'll give each of them a try then. I'm working on FE Warriors and Echoes right now. Sacred Stones is fun, too!

There's used copies on Amazon for about $27.  You could also look up local retro game stores (non retail like Gamestop).  While they are not guaranteed to have it they might at a lower price.  2nd and Century is pretty cool I have one right by me.  You could also check out eStarland.  I believe you can order from them online but I haven't done so I usually drive up there.

Thanks! I'll have to look some places up and see if they have in stock on Amazon.

  6. I borrowed a friend's copy of Awakening and beat it, and I like the game (though it's not my favorite). Now, I kind of want to buy my own copy and it's always so expensive at GameStop. Where else can I find a good copy for a cheaper price? I want to do a harder difficulty in my next run of the game, so I'm hoping that I can buy a copy soon.

My best experience with Fates was with Birthright, though that may have just been because of the novelty of the game at the time more than anything else.  I liked Conquest up to about chapter 15.  And Revelation is a slog, but I'm a sucker for the "golden ending" and the fact that it brings the casts of each path together.

    - Cast-wise, both Hoshido and Nohr have good characters and bad ones.  The good ones include Saizo, Charlotte, Benny, Mitama, Shiro, Forrest, Leo, Takumi, Arthur, and of course Oboro.  Most others are alright too, though the path exclusive characters I have yet to warm up to are Peri, Camilla, Setsuna, and two of the three Awakening Hoshidan copies (Asugi and Caeldori, whose base-characters I never really liked too much to begin with).  Hoshido has a very slight edge over Nohr, and it's mostly because of Oboro.

    - In regards to the gameplay, they're all fairly solid.  The map design is allegedly the best in Conquest, but I haven't played that path enough to confirm that myself.  I mean, I have finished it, but I haven't beaten it on Hard or Lunatic, nor have I played through it a second time.  If I want a challenge, I'll just go play Thracia instead.  I hear the story is better in that game anyway.

    - Storywise, they're all mediocre to me, but Conquest is the worst imo.  It feels like in order to tolerate the story, I have to pretend certain things happen or don't happen, which is the true mark of a story that I just can't enjoy.  Birthright is okay taken on its own - maybe dull for a stretch - but the point of the path split is ruined with Revelation.  Spoilers abound.

      Reveal hidden contents

Okay, so I actually head canon that in either non-Revelation path, Anankos has used up too much power controlling Garon and the illusions to be a threat.  I picture it as a similar situation to Chrom landing the final blow on Grima; it's a threat that's temporarily put aside that will eventually rear its ugly head in a few generations or so.

However, even considering my head canon, there's no denying just how contrived the plot device that is the invisible kingdom is.  The fact that Azura knew about this, but didn't attempt to do anything about it or try to lead Corrin down the objectively correct path, is inexcusable.  And the idea that you go through either path, slaughter half of either family (along with possibly their retainers), and likely cause the deaths of many innocent lives, feels insulting when you come upon this final path and realize you can just go and kill a big, bad dragon.

It ruins the other two paths for this reason.  It is the worst path for the very reason it is the best path; it is the most ideal option for dealing with the ultimate enemy.

Nothing is really clear to me on my current feelings about Fates other than that I dislike Conquest's story enough that I can't bring myself to play through it a second time.

I had the easiest time with Birthright, so my best experience was in that one, too. Conquest was obviously more difficult and I was up for a challenge, and speaking of which, the Endgame for Revelation was a challenge as well (and including the couple of chapters before it). I really like Camilla, though, otherwise I'd agree with you. Oboro is awesome, I use her a lot in my Hard mode run of Birthright and also in Revelation a bit. I'm leaning towards Conquest as well, if the topic is about gameplay, but the Endgame was nearly impossible for me.

IDK about that. Awakening tries to tell 3 separate stories too. Atleast Fates split it into 3 separate games instead of trying to tie them together haphazardly like Awakening did.

I can understand your disappointment in Fates but to call it objectively the worst is a bit of a stretch.

To me Fates' goal seemed to be to tell a more personal story then Awakening and to me atleast it succeeded.

I'm focusing on it because far too many pro-Nohr players ignore it when they accuse Birthright players of "betraying" the "real" family.

Honestly I agree with you about Conquest. I mean, aside from simply just preferring the Nohrian siblings there is literally no reason to side with Nohr and even Corrin can't justify it.

Though to me having Conquest be the purely selfish path would have been fine if the game didn't try to feebly justify it.

My first experience in FE was Awakening, so I don't think that I'm all that qualified to mention it, and I'm not exactly a "new" fan anymore since I've branched out to different FE games since then. I enjoyed Awakening, but I had trouble keeping up with the three stories within the plot. I still find it to be a good game, but not exactly my favorite since the Fates games are my favorite (so far). I agree with you on Fates seemed to be telling a "personal story," as you put it, and I agree that it was successful. I really agree with you guys on Conquest since all Corrin (in that game) was doing was preferring her adoptive siblings. If my memory serves me correct, Nohr is corrupt and Garon is just plain evil, if not worse. All of the crap he was putting her through for coming back to Nohr was unreasonable.

Conquest easily wins on the gameplay front.  It's more faithful to traditional FE games with high difficulty, no off-story grinding options, and limited resources.  The game boxes even tell you on the back which game is more difficult!

I love Conquest's difficulty as the maps have a variety of traps and varied objectives.  The overall difficulty really forces you to think and plan out your attack before you make your move.  I guess that applies to the other 2 games, but they are much more forgiving should you make a mistake.

Unlike other 2 paths, enemies possess unique skills (Samurai w/ Lunge and Armored Blow, MOA w/ 4 rallies, etc.).  While this makes them formidable foes, this also makes them valuable allies as most of them can be captured and convinced/bribed to join your team.

Then that's the closest, other than Sacred Stones, to a traditional FE game then. I played Conquest on an easier difficulty, though.

  10. I recently beat Revelation and I finally got three games completed. I find it to be a really hard decision since I enjoyed all three of the games. I prefer the Nohrian characters over the Hoshidan characters, so Conquest wins there. Based on seeing all of the endings in the three games, I prefer Revelation's, although Birthright and Conquest's endings are very good as well (in my opinion). I don't consider myself a very experienced FE fan yet, so I haven't got to some of the other games yet since I've been focusing on the 3DS games before I get to the earlier games. For gameplay, I can't decide at all on which one I like best.

    What are your opinions?

Nohr Noble gives you a higher Magic growth and promotion bonus, so it's definitely the better class if you want to use the Dragon Stone or Levin Sword. I always choose based on whether I want Corrin to be a combat or support unit and / or whom they are married to, because of the pair up bonuses.
If you want to be a support unit, go Hoshidan Noble for Staff utility and Dragon Ward, if you want to be a (magic) combat unit, go Nohr Noble for better Dragonstone usage, Tomes and stronger Levin Sword hits. Draconic Hex is awesome, too. For physical combat units, I suggest switching to your partner's class if they have a physical one or to your talent class if it's a physical one, though make sure you can use swords after switching if you want to keep using the Yato in combat. Something like Dread Fighter, Lodestar (if you're male) or Great Lord (if you're female) might work, too.
If you married a physical character, like Silas or Kaze, consider Hoshido Noble for the superior Strength bonus due to pair up, if you married a Magic user, like Leo or Odin, go Nohr Noble for the superior boost to Magic.

Just some stuff to think about.

I chose Nohr Noble based on the higher magic growth and had Kana keep using the Dragon Stone since I changed both him and Dwyer to Nohr Noble. Draconic Hex was one of the main reasons that I managed to beat Conquest since I made Corrin (in that game) into a Nohr Noble, then changed her into the Great Lord class afterwards once she reached level 5 as a Nohr Noble. I would've had an easier time during the final boss battle in Revelation if I didn't go directly from Nohr Princess to Dark Falcon. Kana and Dwyer had that skill, though. That's good stuff to think about if I ever decide to try a harder difficulty in Revelation later on, though! Thanks!

I prefer the Nohr Noble for it's aesthetics* Sexy edgy black is sexy* and gameplay * I like throwing thunderbolts at people *.

Rev swarms you in both healers and magic users so it's not like your team will be hurting either way.

So it really depends on personal preference. Do you prefer Wholesome White or Sexy Black and want to heal or use magic?

I prefer magic, especially ones that land critical hits! After having chosen Hoshido Noble in Birthright and choosing Nohr Noble in Revelation, it's safe to say that I prefer Nohr Noble for the sake of using tomes. Mjölnir has to be my favorite magic to use and second in line is Horse Spirit.

If you have heart seals, definitely dabble in both since Nohrian Trust + Hoshidan Unity + Draconic Hex (Quixotic too if you have it) is a combo you can do really nasty things with.  As for a final class, either is fine depending on what role you want your character to fill.  Personally I prefer Nohr Noble because of tomes: doubling at 2-range and being able to counter on the EP really helped me out in Conquest.  All staff duties were left to Niles, Elise, and all those Falconknights I captured, lol.  I always equip Horse Spirit, and leave Yato in my inventory since its stat bonuses will still stack with those of Horse Spirit even though it's not equipped.

Chapter 10 was really difficult, but hardest Chapter in CQ for me was definitely 17 on Lunatic.  The Grisly Wound + Poison Strike Ninjas led to many instances of me throwing my DS against the wall.  So surprised it didn't break.

I basically went with Nohr Noble as my choice. Tomes are my favorite way to attack and I have different choices of what types I can use for any of the individual units able to use them (depending). I did Hoshido Noble on my Birthright file, so I decided to do something different this time. The Yato is still on my Corrin, although she can't use it due to the class I changed her, too, and I use Horse Spirit as well. Also Mjölnir has been really helpful in playing through Revelation. I might change Dwyer or Kana over to Hoshido Noble later once they get more skills equipped, but I don't know yet.

It's your choice.  Neither promotion is objectively terrible, though I've always favored Nohr Noble anyway because of Draconic Hex pretty much being the most powerful debuff skill you can get on a playable unit, which is great for weakening enemy bosses/powerful units for your weaker units to demolish.  And there's the option to always switch to the other anyway, granted if you have any Heart Seals.

Draconic Hex really helped me out in the Endgame of Conquest (needless to say was the hardest chapter in the game for me to beat, aside from chapter ten), so for the purpose of that, I might go with Nohr Noble for Kana, but maybe switch over later with a Heart Seal.

  15. 1 minute ago, Ertrick36 said:

I'd say Dwyer should be Hoshido Noble and Kana should be Nohr Noble.

If you have plenty of healers as is (or you plan on not using any healers), Nohr Noble all the way.  It's really just a matter of whether you want your units to be semi mages or semi healers.  Though for Hoshidan Noble, you might also want to pick up some activation-based skills (Aether, Luna, etc.) and have the Nohr Noble pair up with someone who has a lot of activation-based skills, just so their later skills are actually effective.  But that isn't so important in the long run; it's just something to think about.

I made Dwyer into a Nohr Noble, but I don't know what I'll do with Kana yet. I'm gonna level him up a bit more first before I make a choice. I based my decision on having more magic users on my unit. I love using magic in FE and I'll always find room for more magic in my units.

I'd argue that Camilla is a pretty evil person who just loves Corrin, and Xander is loyal to his father to a fault. Both of them have strong evil tendencies. Xander tries to put on a "good" face that comes through in Conquest, but it falls apart in all kinds of ways in Birthright.

Leo and Elise are a bit more gray/good, but Xander and especially Camilla are debatable.

Now that I think about it, Xander is extremely loyal to Nohr, and especially it shows in chapter six of Birthright when Corrin chooses to fight for Hoshido. In the My Castle part in Conquest, Camilla says something along the lines of "Tell me who I need to kill" when talking to Corrin. I don't remember the quote exactly, though. You have a good point.

Fates couldn't go more out of its way to paint Nohr as the bad guy. They're the aggressors, they conquer, they love killing, they seemingly have no problem('cept Scarlet) obeying Garon after he's been replaced with dragon spit that's been injected with lethal doses of pure evil, and Peri. Just Peri. They live in a nearly pure black wasteland where it's seemingly always night for crying out loud.

Hoshido, meanwhile, is a peaceful land full of peaceful people who just want peace, but have to fight back against the evil Nohr army.

That describes the games perfectly. Nohr is portrayed as evil and ruthless, and since I finished Conquest recently, Corrin's siblings aren't evil at all. I love how when Garon was testing Corrin when she returned to Nohr after betraying Hoshido, her adoptive siblings came to her aid. Forgive me if my memory is wrong here.
