The main things in his favor are that Swordmasters in Binding Blade get a stupidly high +30 Critical and that the hit rates in Binding Blade are sufficiently low that dodge-tanking is actually a viable strategy most of the time.

That's fair, but Swordmasters typically are terrible. Even Fir isn't all that good.

Unless the game crashes at a certain turn-count they re infinite if we exclude the heat wave death of the universe.

    Yep I know

Okay, yes, turn counts aren't technically limited, but that's not the point. When you take 15 turns to beat a chapter that can be beaten in 7-8, you can use literally anyone as the enemies stop being difficult. You have to play fast, otherwise units don't stand out from each other at all in any notable way. This is why units are rated by efficiency, and helps explain why Rebecca is just an objectively terrible unit.

I don't remember moving at a snail's pace though, I tend to move pretty fast but I did give many kills to Rebecca.

There's just no way you're going to have a level 15 Rebecca by Chapter 17 without grinding her to some degree. You're babying her. You would've gotten a significantly faster turncount had you not used Rebecca.

HHM isn't easy. The other modes are. And yes I acknowledge the EHM BS I will remake this sometime in the future.

HHM isn't really that hard if I'm gonna be honest. And even then, when you let yourself lure each enemy individually and play at a snail's pace, any unit can be good. It's possible to train up even Sophia in FE6 on hard mode, but that doesn't mean she's good.

You have to admit that at least in the end she is good, but her start and mid-game sucks.

Right, but all that effort into raising her just isn't worth it. You could've just used someone else and got the same thing. It's just not worth the effort. Not to mention that you played incredibly slowly and on EHM. Anyone can be good under those circumstances because FE7 is extremely easy.

  7. Giving him any other weapon type would be helpful, but.... it doesn't really make sense. So I'd recommend just giving him a horse, and giving him charm/charisma would at least help him be decent. You could also just give him one more movement, and buff his stats. That wouldn't make him good, but it'd certainly make him better.

That's funny because Paladins are personally my least favorite class because of how bland they are compared to Great Knights, Nomad Troopers, Mage Knights, etc.

My soft spots are usually for classes that the player often doesn't have great access to, such as Brigands/Berserkers and Dark Magic users.  Also for classes like Warriors and Knights/Generals that IS seems to screw over more than they should.

I guess I'm just one for utility. All in all, I prefer the fliers, but Paladins just help so much with the early game and are so fun to use when you start getting concious of rescue drop/trading opportunities.

Okay, fine. Sorry if I didn't make you feel welcome. So... What are your favorite and least favorite classes and why?

Like I said, I'm used to arguing about stuff on Fire Emblem forums, I totally expected this, lmao.

My favourite classes are probably Paladins or Wyvern Knights. I really enjoy rescue dropping, and those two classes are the best at doing it. For my least favourite classes, I'm not a big fan of armour knights or archers as they're typically pretty useless due to their low movement and lack of 1 range and low stats, respectively. Armour Knights are a bit more enjoyable in games where they can promote to Great Knight, though. I guess Great Knight is pretty cool, too, especially in Skills System FE8.

At the same time, I think you're giving them far more credit than they deserve. So... We're kinda stuck. As for Genealogy's maps, that's something I consider a huge problem - it tells me that I have to worry about being bored to sleep, which I consider a huge red flag. FE6 might not have that issue, yes, but it has a problem that's almost as bad - that being feeling more like a series of escort missions, which tend to be the unfavorites of gamers. I would dare disagree on Genealogy or Binding Blade having good maps, too, largely because I consider them the absolute bottom of the barrel map design wise, thanks to, again, having most, if not all their maps have the same problems. Binding Blade also has some really awful gimmicks on some of its maps that make me consider the ones from Fates tolerable in comparison.

We're really getting nowhere with this so let's just agree to disagree. There's no point in keeping this up.

The thing is, those two games overdo it, especially Genealogy, where literally every map falls victim to the same fundamental pitfalls. The sloooooow enemy phases don't help matters either. There'a a reason it's often called "Horse Emblem", after all.... Ditto for Binding Blade. They're also instances where it's more like the gameplay goes out of its way to accomodate the story, which doesn't sit well with me. As for the bad story part, I would agree that it is a problem, but I consider bad mechanics and bad gameplay especially grave sins in comparison, because those are what's most likely to make me consider a game not worth playing. Long story short, Jugdral would need a remake for me to consider it worthwhile, and even that's no guarantee, because I don't trust IS to not mess it up by being overly faithful to the original.

I think you're selling Jugdral and especially Binding Blade short. I'll admit that yes, the maps in Geneaology are way too large for any other Fire Emblem game, but I think a large part of it isn't actually their size. The main issue with Geneaology is the excess of backtracking through large expanses of desolate land with nothing to do other than move units and hit end turn. FE6 doesn't suffer from this issue, as there's always something to do in a majority of chapters. And, to give a controversial statement; I think that Fates didn't even have good mechanics or gameplay to give it even some kind of redeeming factor. The maps in Conquest and Revelation rely far too heavy on one-time, meaningless gimmicks that serve only to make each chapter feel "distinct" and don't even have a logical place in the story. Conquest has a few good maps, but I'd say that every FE game has good maps, including Genaology.

Complaining about the Jugdral games is something Mir does a lot around here.

I hope you're not getting any bad impressions from all this.

I'm used to it at this point, lmao.

Praising any game in the Fire Emblem fanbase is bound to start an argument, and I can't say that I'm not guilty of it, either, especially in particular with Fire Emblem Fates, which has become one of my least favourite games of all time.

Personally, I could easily forgive a bad story if the gameplay is good enough. However, I don't think the opposite is true - ergo, I say a good story cannot salvage a game if the gameplay is completely awful, which, unfortunately, is the case with Jugdral. Anyway, big maps aren't something I have a problem with... that is, if they're not overused, which both Jugdral (or at least Genealogy) and Binding Blade are guilty of - I'm of the opinion that giant maps and Fire Emblem just don't mix.

This isn't a debate thread, so I don't want to get too into it, but I think that in both Jugdral and FE6, the big maps have their place; gameplay and story are inextricably linked, no matter what you do. A Fire Emblem game with a bad story (like Conquest) is still going to suffer regardless of whether or not your gameplay is "good."  Gameplay/story integration is extremely important IMO and both Binding Blade and Jugdral do it perfectly. Chapter 21 of Binding Blade is my favourite example of it; it works perfectly and is very fun, in part due to its large size.

Welcome to Airport 1001. Remember to wake that slugabed up.

I wonder why you like the older FE games, since anything before Blazing Blade, I find hard to play, let alone like, especially Binding Blade, which is too in love with long winding maps, and the Jugdral saga, which I consider a disaster in almost every conceivable way.

I enjoy larger maps, typically, and as a whole I tend to prefer good stories to subpar or bad ones (which are extremely prevalent post DS-FE). Jugdral's gameplay I honestly enjoy, and as whole I think the criticisms on its gameplay are a bit overblown. I get that it's not the best, and I'll admit that, but I don't think it's quite as bad as everyone seems to say.

Don't forget to read the rules and all~!

(end generic greeting, and BTW, your sig's file size is too big, 300 KB is the max)

Oof... it took me a while to find that gif. Oh well. I changed it, hopefully this one isn't too terribly large, like the other one.

  16. I'm pretty woried, to be honest. I very, very much dislike the three 3DS games, and I've lost most of my faith in IS to make things I enjoy. But, from what little we've seen, it seems they're taking a step in the right direction. I think it's likely they'll keep some level of 3DSFE-ness in there, but I'm just hoping we get a good game this time around.
