  1. Point one: Ever heard of lysithea's def?

Lysithea is an amazing unit who is literally a walking nuke, but dies when any enemy so much as breathes in her general direction. Even her res is pretty bad. Lorenz, on the other hand, depending on his class path, can have a def growth of 40% (lysithea has 10%), making him the only bulky mage. He is the only mage who can hold his own on the frontline, making him far more versatile than lysithea.

Point two: What the hell is a wide spell list?

There are some pretty good high magic power users in this game who have a pretty bad spell list (Hanneman, Sylvain, to name a few), who can't properly utilize their magic completely (Hanneman is good with magic bow though). Lorenz, on the other hand, has fire, sagiatte, ragnarock and AGNEAS ARROW. Despite having less powerful magic than say marianne or lysithea, he makes up for it with ridiculously powerful spells.

    Point three: y u no heal lysithea 😞 ?

Lorenz has access to recover (most units have this but its still useful and WARD. Lorenz is the only unit (which is viable) that has access to ward. This helps lorenz in the long run become even more useful at support roles. Lysithea only has access to heal, making her even less flexible.

Point four: What is this madness? a mage with high strength?

Unlike every other mage, lorenz actually has decent str and decent combat arts (lysithea does have soulblade), allowing him to remain on the frontlines slightly longer, whilst once again increasing his versatility. If lorenz runs out of usages on his spells, his decent speed allows for doubling occasionally (consistently in my case), meaning having a silver lance or brave lance is also viable.

Point five: tough luck, Lorenz also has the best heroes relic.

Thrysus, an accessory relic, gives +2 magic range (4 range ragnarock!), which is busted, but if a unit has a crest of gloucester, they get pavise/aegis a lot of the time. Lorenz and lysithea have access to this effect.

point six: What is so special about gremory?

Gremory is literally just handicapped dark knight but also is exclusive to female units. Its extremely overrated; its only advantage is slightly higher charm and dexterity growth. Dark knight has higher mobility, versatility, strength and equal magical capabilities. If anything, lysithea is misssing out on access to poison strike and lifetaker (both help lorenz become more bulky).

Overall, I think lorenz is completely written off by lorenz' at first having a bad personality and also the worst hair to ever be designed. I've noticed that people constantly will tell that characters they don't like are also bad (this happens to hanneman as well). Lorenz is easily one of the best units in the game without having to put much work in.

That doesn't change the fact that he's outclassed at said niche.

The problem is, dragging Raphael along for that long is about as practical as trying to drag along a Crabrawler in Sun and Moon - aka, not at all. (For context, Crabrawler evolves from being leveled up in a certain area. The problem? Said area happens to be the last area right before the Elite Four. The only hint as to this? One of the Elite Four uses said evolution on his team. This being said, Ultra Sun and Moon changed this as to make it much more practical, as you can access the area in question much earlier.) I don't have much, if any, reason to believe that this is even remotely worth it. Especially when most everyone else only needs a fraction of the effort he needs to be decent, much less good.

I fail to see it - he doesn't excel in anything. That is NOT a good thing, by the way. In terms of magic, not only does he have the misfortune of being in the same house as Lysithea, but his spell list isn't even that good. It doesn't help that the good magic classes are locked to females. Physically, he doesn't stack up to Claude, much less Hilda or Byleth. By the way, Heroes' Relics can be used by anyone.

He is the only bulky mage. Lysithea dies if any unit breathes in her general direction

  3. Hello,

I signed up on Tuesday, and saw this in feed, so here I am. I was first introduced into fe by a friend, who was playing blazing blade. I thought the game looked really good, and decided to buy fe awakening when it released in 2013. I have been in love with the series since then and have played some others as well, including PoR and Radiant dawn. I've stayed away from the newer games for the most part (dis-including three houses).

I would say Ashe is better than Raphael, who I'd consider the king of underwhelming. What in the name of Hylia can he do that someone else can't do better? He has high HP, but that doesn't make him a good tank because he's so slow he'd get doubled by a snail on depressants. And now we have Balthus, who practically renders him obsolete. I gave up on him in my first run because he was getting nowhere fast. Long story short, I can't find a good reason to suffer through the trouble of raising him. Ditto for Lorenz, who only has it slightly better.

    I disagree with lorenz.

All his growths are good (40-60 I think?), has a bunch of viable class paths, and is also the ONLY bulky mage in three houses. He has an amazing spell list (ragnarock, agneas arrow, abraxas), has high str as well as magic, and as previously mentioned, is the only bulky mage in the game. He also has good combat arts for his kit. He can even be a viable support (recover and ward combined with high movement). He also has the best accessory heroes relic in the game, giving aegis, pavise and +2 to magic range.

Lorenz is not underwhelming in the slightest, if anything, he is a little overwhelming.

Note: this is a NG+ file i'm starting on and my previous lorenz had poison strike and lifetaker, making him perfect for a NG+ run

  5. I've always seen caspar as being the most underwhelming unit; dodgy growths, situational personal and is just far outclassed in everything he does. He is supposed to be a physical frontline unit but can only deal a small amount of damage and take a small amount in return. He became even more useless when balthus released back in february: dis man is literally just caspar with better stats and growths in pretty much everything. I'm doing a maddening run and I do not intend to babysit caspar to make him good when even raphael is more useful.

Speaking of, raphael is another underwhelming unit. He falls into the trope of being a slow but heavy hitting unit. This type of unit SUCKS in 3h. Raphael has a 15% speed growth without being but into armoured knight/fortress knight (speed becomes 5%). Everything he does is once again done better by balthus and even dedue

  6. I'm doing my first gd maddening playthrough on a new game+ file and I'm not sure which units to recruit. Any offers? And if so, what builds?

Edit: I'm definitely using leonie, claude, sylvain, hilda, lysithea and ignatz

Leonie is going through fighter-brigand-paladin-bow knight

claude is a pretty standard route

Sylvain is going through fighter-brigand-wyvern rider-wyvern lord

hilda is going through the same as sylvain but with seal speed

Lysithea is going through monk-mage-bishop-gremory (giving her soulblade)

Ignatz is going through myrimidon-archer-brigand-assassin and ending on sniper (giving him seal strength)

recruiting and using flayn, mercedes and ferdinand (maybe bernadetta as well), recruiting others for paralogues

Ignatz is going to be purely a debuff unit, (break shot,Ward shot, haze slice, seal strength), but will be able to kill weaker units with crits due to stupidly high dex. I will keep him solely for maddening demonic beasts.

Lysithea is a walking nuke and the kit I'll give her will help her even more

Hilda and sylvain are both going to be my main source of damage output, with hilda being slightly less strong

Claude is going to be crowd control (encloser, hit+20)

Leonie will be frontline, protecting my weaker units whilst also giving damage in return

Ferdinand will be my primary tank

flayn will be a holyknight (I dont have DlC, meaning flayn is my only way of using rescue)

Mercedes will a bishop, giving her access to double use of healing and white magic (solely a support unit)

Also, Who should be my dancer?
