  1. Too late, but...I'm a social work major, and this has come up in almost every sociology and psychology class I have taken. Having gay parents, whether via adoption or other means, doesn't seem to make a person more prone to be gay themselves (especially since there's a large body of scholars arguing that people are largely born with a predetermined orientation). It hasn't been found to cause any particular psychological problems, either. Basically, most studies seem to agree that a stable, loving family is more important than the genders of the parents involved. Since in my view, the state's role in adoption is basically to ensure the child is placed in such an environment (to the best of the authorities' ability) the sexual orientation shouldn't be considered.

    If anybody wants the name of some of the studies cited in the textbooks, by the way, I'd be more than happy to dig them up.

  2. I'm quick to forgive, because we all do stupid things from time to time. In the long run I find that holding any sort of grudge does me a hell of a lot more harm than it does to the other person. However, I have an elephant's memory when it comes to peoples' actions, so it takes a while to completely or near-completely remove an offense from my mind. I also try to keep past issues in mind so that I can see whether or not the person is genuinely attempting to redress their wrongs. So to sum it up, my basic method is forgive as soon as possible, and forget when the other party earns it.

  3. A cool review, but I think he was a biiit too generous to the Bakshi film - it did some things right and holds a nostalgic place in my heart (since I saw it before even reading the book when I was pretty young), but was very over the top. My father and I are both hardcore Tolkien fans, and we love watching our old copy of that movie and pointing out its errors, oddities and failed characterizations. Not that the Jackson films don't have some areas that sting a bit, but it makes up for the changes with its solid acting and storytelling. I even convinced my father that maybe Tom Bombadil just wasn't cut out for a big screen epic.

    Shame the Critic didn't also do the Rankin-Bass Return of the King, though. Definitely inferior to its Jackson counterpart, but there's so much he could pick on!

  4. ...He looks more like House, which just doesn't work for me in spite of the latter character being influenced by Holmes.

    I'm sporadically working my way through the Holmes canon in chronological order, and assuming that the character isn't totally changed in the latter half of the series (which I can't believe)...this feels wrong. It's Sherlock Holmes gone 20th Century Hollywood, and even if it somehow turns out to be a decent story in its own right it simply can't coincide with my view of the character (influenced solely by the books, since I've never seen more than twenty seconds of any adaptation).

  5. New York - Awful place to drive for different reasons. Around the Burroughs, the traffic is horrendous, and of course, there's a shitload of tolls, especially the GW Bridge (it's expensive to go into NY). The Bronx is brutal. But even when you get away from the cities, you have problems because the people in the southern part of the state suck, and the area up north by Albany/Schenectady is congested and confusing to get around.

    I can echo the southern NY part, I live in Rockland and people are pushy and very bad with those things called signals. The smaller local roads tend to be okay-ish, but anything main is not fun - to the point where I'm glad to spend a half hour on back roads over fifteen minutes on main roads. And I don't know about the Jersey drivers in New Jersey, but the ones we get around here are pretty damn insane. Rapid changes in speed, lack of signaling, and a tendency to treat the rules of the road as suggestions do not mix well.

  6. I don't really think it's terribly likely. Scanlation takes a lot of time and skill, and very often the members with one are lacking in the other or simply have other priorities. Nice as it would be for somebody to just sit down for a few hours and do the whole thing, that's impossible. It's a fairly time-consuming process, and I honestly don't know that the FE fan community has the resources for another scanlation project on top of the very awesome ones already in progress and the completed one.

    Of course, anybody who does have the time/ability/ambition is always welcome to prove me wrong. ;)

  7. Lawful Good

    A lawful good character acts as a good person is expected or required to act. She combines a commitment to oppose evil with the discipline to fight relentlessly. She tells the truth, keeps her word, helps those in need, and speaks out against injustice. A lawful good character hates to see the guilty go unpunished. Lawful good is the best alignment you can be because it combines honor and compassion.

    That seems pretty accurate.

  8. If the Darna miracle = the battle between dragons, I guess it does need a bit of tweaking (though I haven't heard FE1/3's version of the story), but I can see it to be meant that way. If this is true I guess it also means that Lopto can't be the same as Medeus (if I get it the right way) : /
    (Possible FE3 spoiler)

    Presumably not, FE3 indicates that at this point Medeus was still loyal to Naga. My guess is that Loputousu was the leader of the wild Earth Dragons, possibly even metamorphosed into a Dark Dragon as in FE3.

  9. ...Am I the only one who finds a public debate* on the banning or unbanning of members a trifle...bizarre? I've been hanging around forums for a solid six years now, and I have NEVER seen such a thing no matter how justified/unjustified the bannings were. I'm not convinced the peanut gallery, myself included, has any particular right to argue for/against banning particular members. It's between the staff and the banned members, and if others want to chime in their opinions I seriously think PM is the best venue, if at all.

    *Or discussion, really - a debate is a very formal and dignified process that rarely happens on internet forums

  10. Hmmm...if memory serves, Dorcas got the axe rather quickly - and literally. I'm the kind of guy who reads the manual after about an hour of gameplay, so I was quite suprised to see that he didn't pop back up in the next chapter.

  11. I doubt the plot had much impact, seeing as Final Fantasy (which had a very threadbare plot) was brought here and did well enough to warrant the localization of other games in the series. However, that series does offer clues as to why FE games didn't go abroad, as FF5 wasn't translated because it was deemed "too difficult". Looking at other series on the NES and SNES, I'm guessing that excuse was only used for fairly text-heavy games which would take EFFORT to localize.

    INFJ

    You are:

    * very expressed introvert

    * slightly expressed intuitive personality

    * moderately expressed feeling personality

    * moderately expressed judging personality

    Very fitting, since I'm a future social worker. Taking these tests make me realize how eccentric I am, though - in some areas I'm as rational and pragmatic as can be, while in others I go strictly with my gut (for example, I firmly accept everything science has proven, but also have a definite belief in God). I also find it interesting that this test matches quite well with the astrological chart I made for myself a while back.

  13. I like to get a level up or two, maybe play catch-up with newer units. Frankly, the time needed to get multiple characters to level 20 promoted or unpromoted is a bit much for me, ESPECIALLY since one misstep means I have to start from the beginning of the chapter. I used to have that sort of patience when I was new to the game, but now not even Ninian's rings make it secure enough for my liking.

  14. I have about 190 video games, always have at least three books I haven't read yet (and sometimes whole huge volumes, like my complete Sherlock Holmes - I'm taking that in spurts), a decent DVD collection and a pretty damn fast internet connection. My problem isn't having nothing to do, it's making up my mind XD

    I almost never just sit and watch TV, though. DVDs, yeah, but for some reason when just straight television doesn't hold my interest, since my mind doesn't like to be too passive.

    If you really just want to kill time, TVTropes and Wikipedia will consume your whole day. And night, very often.

  15. Like FESS before it, my main draw to Serenes Forest is the Fire Emblem information, much of which comes out on the forum before reaching the site (being an information junkie, I have to know things as soon as humanly possible). Funnily enough, I almost never post in FE discussions, because I don't have a lot to say and prefer to "listen" and observe.

  16. I think that most people with decent health and health care need not be more concerned than with regular flu. The word pandemic is such a scare word, but in developed countries (hell, even in undeveloped countries if you're lucky enough to be within the upper classes) this will be for most of us just another flu. Does it suck? Yes. Should you lose sleep over it? No, I wouldn't say so. Proceed as normal, keep clean, and if you're sick get treated.

    Note that I'm neither a doctor nor scientifically minded. I just think that panicking is silly, especially when the situation is overblown.

  17. Lived my life as usual - browsing the rest of the internet, talking to friends, driving lessons, and judicious amounts of food. I can't say I was too affected.

    Although a part of me had a feeling that TheEnd would obtain the scans of Chapter 40 while we had no way of knowing because that's how life works. Didn't turn out that way, though.
