D: Grade my english homework as punishment. >:C This passage is significant because it provides insight into Vardaman’s character and furthers the plot and narration. Earlier in the book, Vardaman created a connection between his mother’s death and a fish he caught and gut earlier. Now that this fish is into pieces of “not-fish” and “not-blood”, he blames his mother’s death on Peabody. Jumping off of the porch, Vardaman runs into the barn and proceeds to beat Peabody’s animals with a stick, cursing and blaming them for Addie Bundren’s death. While the first sections of the novel make it clear that Darl’s voice is the most authoritative, Vardaman’s actions and narration takes on increasing importance as the story progresses. Both Darl’s and Vardaman’s voices find common ground on the incredibly fragile concept of existence. Darl has the voice of a philosopher when he contemplates situations. For Darl, his mother’s transformation from a living person into a lifeless object brings up the question of what it means to exist. Vardaman struggles with similar questions, although his thoughts are conducted with the imagination of a child. Vardaman compares the transformation of a live fish into “not-fish” and “not-blood” with the death of his mother, and the idea that his own parent can so suddenly cease to exist is as traumatic for him as it is for Darl.
