I was under that kind of rule in my childhood, too. It kind of became meaningless after we got computers, but I think it's a good reference nonetheless. I need the laptop because I use it for class. Computer Science professors have a tendency to go over actual code in class, and it's nice to have something to plug it into and compile to see the code work for yourself.
