I think Teddie once said "this used to be a peaceful, quiet place!" or something along those lines. But it only started getting chaotic when the murders came about. So I figured it had to do with the state of the real world. But more than that, there's something that's been bothering me... Every single dungeon I've been to had to do with the individual's thoughts, and had their own themes. Yukiko's castle, Kanji's bathhouse, Rise's... strip club, Naoto's lab, Nanako's heaven... They all had to do with the character's innermost thoughts. In conclusion, I think... the midnight channel is like some weird mish mosh projection of everyone's deepest thoughts. -... I had always assumed the protagonist was without flaw like they said at the beginning of the story, but I guess not. -... I'm not sure about this either. I don't think Adachi is the head honcho behind this. He may have done the murders, but it seems he slipped up too much. Perhaps whoever used him (if there is someone) gave him his powers, and Namatame was given powers from the same boss because that one knew that he would kill the people.
