The thing is, in the early 90s it wasn't possible to say "OH ONE IS OBJECTIVELY BETTER THAN THE OTHER". Both franchises released top notch stuff in that period. When we get to the 3D era, Sonic clearly starts losing the battle, and the war. Super Mario World on SNES is great. All Mario NES games > All Sonic games. If we put them on a balance, yeah. So is the defeat of any bastard who picks that fucking Circus man in Dota 2 against me. When sonic started going bad: Sonic Heroes. The game's aesthetics and level design fit with the Genesis games so well and they removed the other gameplay styles that were hit or miss but they goofed with the controls which is the weirdest thing since the Adventure games had excellent control.
