Jump over the flame demons. It's the A button, but you need to jump and attack with the right timing. I only did it once and gained money I think. Just ignore it. In the second screen of the town, there's a flame statue at the very end of the screen and you have to push it out of the way with the Earth Gargoyle to reveal a doorway leading to the catacombs.
