Before I really suggest a manga/anime, I have to ask how much gore can you take. I mean, it has a reasonable ammount of arms/legs being cut off, and some decapitations as well =o. It might be a bit complex, but it's a show that I think definitely fits your tastes. It's also the best show in the anime history ever. When I reached episode 98, I was almost sad there wasn't at least 100 more episodes. The gaidens and movies are not mandatory to watch. They're just trivia that give more depth to some characters.
