It isn't easy to dodge a stab that lunges vertically from up to down, knives aren't the type of weapons that weigh your arm down like an axe for example. If you lunge forward, I can dodge your thrust by moving to the side. If you don't, then I can dodge it by moving backwards. Your own momentum will carry you either past me, or your lack thereof will cause you to not reach me.
