Hell, Hyper Beam was actually used and Rock types being slow, they didn't mind Paralysis that much from Body Slam. It does help Rock is super effective against 4 types, and it's usual partner Ground gives it 3 more in Gen 1 and 4 in the others. Speaking of Hyper Beam... That was BROKEN in generation 1. It halved the target's defense when it hit, meaning it actually had a power of 300 (!!!) and 90 accuracy (To put this in perspective, a lot of the more powerful moves have 80% accuracy or less!). And if you KO'd an opponent Pokemon with it, the recharge time wasn't needed, which meant you could just blast the next one out. OK, Rock is effective against Ice, Fire, Flying, and Bug, whereas Ground is effective against Fire (which is already covered by Rock), Electric, Steel, and Poison.
