In FE7 he was known as the Sword Demon and he loved blood and killing things, so I thought it'd made sense if Sothe simply died on one of his killing sprees. You probably went the Harken route, then? There's a chapter where you either get Harken (Hero with brave sword) or Karel (swordmaster with wo dao, a 40 crit sword only SMs and Lyn can use) depending on what you do in the chapter. There's this one map where if you fulfill certain requirements you'll get Karel as an NPC and you'll have to talk to him to join, or Harken as an enemy unit and you'll have to talk to him with Eliwood or something.
