I'd just as easily do the same to protect Nel. He does it with the POWER OF HEART. You just have a temporary burning sensation that seems similar, but really isn't. You'd die at 0 health, just like anyone else... Unless Nel is your daughter? And yes, I know about the epic scene with Galuf.
