Defeatist Elitist
Boy, have I been playing Austria wrong. I can never secure a German alliance. I did have an Austrian-Turkey alliance that almost won once, but Turkey decided to backstab me, and, while we were fighting, the third party country that was still alive, which I believe was either France or England, swept through and won. It was awful. Austria-Turkey Alliance is great. If you're Turkey. Austria-Germany is one of the few, really, really mutualistic alliances on the game board, and you can actually complete a game where both members compete and both TRY to win, and one does, while never actually attacking one another. As Germany, I almost always agree to the Austria-Germany Alliance, and as Austria I all but beg for it.
_____
Now, that surprises me, as I see a lot more Germany-England alliances than Austria-Germany, even though the latter seems much more beneficial to both parties, now that you explain it. I'm always hesitant to ally for any great length of team with England or France (temporarily though, yeah, I'll use'em and abuse'em), partially because they tend to benefit quite a bit from betraying you, and partially because you will compete too much over supply centers. Austria-Germany means you can stand "back to back" and both expand outwards, while not having to worry about at least one of your flanks. _____
Oh, I don't doubt that it's significantly more useful for both parties.
