the mine glitch, but with the torch staff. with the mine glitch, it let you control the enemies because it made a single spot on the map temporary shift to "player input" programming, or something like that. when an enemy stops on the spot, the game kinda thinks it's the player phase for a short time(to attack the enemy), and then stops "thinking" it's the player's input. resetting the game makes the game forget to switch out of this.

when you use the torch staff on a space on the map, it uses that same programming whenever any unit stops on it. since the torch staff doesn't force a unit to stop like a mine would, you have to reset the game as an enemy waits on a specific torched spot.

(btw i don't know a damn thing about the programming, i'm just trying to rationalize it.)

To put it another way, the Torch Staff (effectively) creates a PWASE at the target location it is used, meaning that if an enemy happens to attack you while on PWASE, you can reset the game right before the enemy unit that attacks your unit greys out and it gives you control of the enemy for the rest of the turn (meaning you can have fun by dropping all the enemy weapons or bringing them to your Lord unit to send their weapons to Supply if so desired). The Mine glitch in a similar manner creates a PWASE where you place the mine.

It is POSSIBLE, but iNSANELY HARD to pull off the "Control Enemy" glitch without using PWASE (but this is essentially TAS-level as you get a one or two frame window or something of the sort to reset in) as opposed to what I believe is a good half of a second if you use PWASE.
