If you're interested in playing other games in the FE series I recommend that you start with Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones and work your way around from there. It's not too difficult and it shares some features with Awakening that aren't in most of the other FE games (branched promotions, skirmishes, access to shops after chapter completion, places to grind, etc.). I second the Sacred Stones suggestion above me, and I also encourage you to play the other games when you can; all had cool features that were the precursor to Awakening.
