Telomeres (see the name telomerase) are pieces of the chromosome that IIRC decay first, before other genes. The idea is that you get less decay of important parts of the gene as long as you still have your telomeres, but eventually they go away as you get very old. Then, the decay of important genes can often lead to too much growth, creating cancerous cells.

That's roughly what I remember from high school bio, anyway. I assume lobsters are good at preserving or renewing their telomeres because of this telomerase...
