I don't like score/point item extends due to the lack of variation. Take EoSD, for example. You're either gonna get the 60M Extend or you'll miss it. Which means your Extend count is either five or six, depend on how well you score. And getting to 60M doesn't even require high-tier scoring. The lack of variation makes the system seem pretty useless. If you're trying to pursue a serious 1cc of EoSD, you might as well just assume you will get 6 Extends and ignore the Extend system otherwise. At worst, you'll just be stuck with five Extends. Which is just too static for me to like.DDC/SA/UFO are different in that sense, since it requires the player to actually care about the Extend system. The total number of life pieces that players collect can vary significantly between different runs, even if they're all 1ccs and by the same player. Which I find to be really cool, since it makes the Extend system a very important factor in your performance in the game, and can have a serious impact on your ability to 1cc.

You're not missing the 60m score extend in EoSD. I don't see how you would.

Well, I'll admit that the idea behind TD's system is actually pretty nice, requiring players to make strategic decisions on when to Trance in order to secure sufficient Extends, and it also plays a large component in scoring approaches (more lives -> more bombs spent to get more spirits to slightly boost PIV -> more Trance to significantly boost PIV).

But when it comes to actual execution, well, the fact that it requires so many life pieces to make higher Extends makes it extremely annoying. It would be amazing if each life required 3-5 life pieces, but noooo, TD had to keep increasing the number. On Normal, for example, it takes a lot of effort and planning to get the 18 Extend in Normal, and there's very little room for error. A small screwup could result in 17/18 life pieces at the end, which will deny you the 18 Extend despite all your effort into building purple spirits up for them. This issue applies even for players that are satisfied with the 15 Extend being their last.

So yeah, as interesting as TD's system is, the actual result is too frustrating to deal with. Still though, I'd put it above score/point item Extends. My current ranking of Extend systems would go DDC > SA > UFO > TD > HRtP > GFW > everything else

it is amazing just how touhou feels so different from other shmups.

Watching this dude who can get to stage 7 of pink sweets 1.00 (a game considered near impossible to 1cc without an infinite live trick) but fail at touhou LOLK normal XD

i main lyrica > reisen > mystia >marisa

reisen's really good at clearing the screen and collecting spirit, while the marisa is well rounded in all places

mystia is just fun to play with her fan scope, she's a bit like aya but better
