For the fifth week, we’re going to vote and dicuss on the best class for Charlotte, the surprisingly thoughtful warrior. I have seen people laud Charlotte’s characterization, so hopefully we can improve her value as a unit by selecting the best class for her!

The format for this post is similar as that of the previous weeks: The following spoiler tags will mostly contain information regarding Charlotte. (The information regarding Marriage/Buddy Seals has been updated, as players have figured out more regarding their functions.) Certain information will be uploaded through the rest of the week. Feel free to look at what you need, and ignore what you don’t need. If you find mistakes within the information, please tell me so that I may correct it.

Without further ado: Which is the best class for Charlotte?

[spoiler=Marriage/Buddy Seals]

Spoiler (Marriage/Buddy Seals)

A Marriage/Buddy seal allows a unit to reclass into one of the select class trees of his spouse (S support) or buddy (A+ support). A unit may only achieve an S support with units of the opposite gender (exc. Kamui, Syalla, Zero), and may only achieve an A+ support with units of the same gender.

(The credit for the following information goes to Gayserbeam, as I copied the wording of his explanation. Check out the Class Changing and Inheritance Thread for more information.

  1. If the user’s Primary Class is different than their Spouse’s/Buddy’s Primary Class, then the Marriage/Buddy Seal will reclass them to the Spouse’s/Buddy’s Primary Class, even if the user has that class as a Secondary Class already.

  2. If the user’s Primary Class is the same as their Spouse’s/Buddy’s Primary Class, then the Marriage/Buddy Seal will reclass them to the Spouse’s/Buddy’s Secondary Class.

  3. If the user is married or buddied with a unit who has an unlearnable class, then the Marriage/Buddy Seal will reclass them to the Spouse’s/Buddy’s Secondary Class.

    1. An unlearnable class is a class that may be unique to a character or their children. The following units have unlearnable classes: Nishiki (Fox Spirit), Flannel (Garou), Azura (Singer), Mozume (Villager).

  4. If the user is married or buddied with a unit who has an unlearnable class, and their Primary Class is the same as their Spouse’s/Buddy’s Secondary Class, then the Marriage/Buddy Seal will reclass them to the Spouse’s/Buddy’s Substitute Class.

    1. A Substitute Class is simply a select class a character with an unlearnable class passes down under certain circumstances. The following units have Substitute Classes: Nishiki (Herb Merchant), Flannel (Outlaw), Azura (Rod Knight), Mozume (Herb Merchant).

If you’re still confused, let me use Charlotte as an example to try and clarify matters!

  1. Charlotte/Saizou: Charlotte’s Primary Class is Fighter, and Saizou’s is Ninja. Therefore, Charlotte would Marriage Seal into Ninja.

    1. Charlotte/Jakob: Charlotte’s Primary Class is Fighter, and Jakob’s is Rod Knight. Therefore, Charlotte would Marriage Seal into Rod Knight. As Charlotte’s Secondary Class is Rod Knight, she would not receive a new class tree from Jakob.

  2. Charlotte/Arthur: Charlotte’s Primary Class is Fighter, and Arthur’s is Fighter. Therefore, Charlotte would Marriage Seal into Arthur’s Secondary Class-- Cavalier.

  3. Charlotte/Nishiki: As Nishiki’s Primary Class is Fox Spirit, an unlearnable class, Charlotte would Marriage Seal into his Secondary Class-- Spellcaster.

  4. Charlotte/Flannel: Flannel’s Primary Class is Garou, an unlearnable class. Charlotte’s Primary Class is Fighter, and Flannel’s Secondary Class is Fighter. Therefore, Charlotte would Marriage Seal into his Substitute Class-- Outlaw.

[spoiler=Rules, Notices, & Clarifications]

Spoiler (Rules, Notices, & Clarifications)

Rules

  • Please be respectful! This is a huge given, but I still see people break it all the time. Don’t be arrogant-- your opinion is important, but hardly the end-all-- and please don’t be a troll.

  • I don’t want these polls to serve only for people who have played the game. Therefore, please be careful with spoilers. As we’re discussing classes, I’m assuming that most people are fine with gameplay spoilers. However, this does not guarantee that people are fine with story spoilers as well, so if you must bring them up, make sure to tag them as spoilers.

    • If you’re tagging story spoilers, leave an explanation. Many people may assume that you simply tagged it as a spoiler because it was a long post, or because it was related to gameplay. Clarify what exactly you’re tagging-- it doesn’t take that many words.

Notices

  • In the optional poll, Takumi placed second, and Camilla and Elise placed third. As such, Takumi will receive three additional votes, and Camilla and Elise will each receive one.

  • Ryoma received only one vote and Benoit received none. Therefore, the two were eliminated from this week’s optional poll. As it has been proven that the forum does not wish to discuss them at the current moment, they have a waiting period of two weeks before they will be re-entered into the optional poll. As the victor, Charlotte has also been removed from this week’s optional poll.

  • Sakura has been re-entered into the optional poll. If it is demonstrated once again that the forum is not interested in her, she will have a waiting period of four weeks before she will be re-entered into the optional poll.

  • Flannel has been added into the optional poll.

Clarification

  • If you’re confused as to what this post is all about, refer to the original post. Week Four polls concerned Leo, Week Three polls concerned Felicia, Week Two polls concerned Silas, and Week One polls concerned Azura.

  • We are discussing the end class for Charlotte. You are free to consider reclassing options along the way (just make sure to factor in the cost of reclassing for the Practicality polls), but your vote should be based on your predicted end class.

  • We’re excluding DLC classes from the polls to preserve balance. However (considering last week), a DLC poll has been added for those interested in them.

    • A DLC poll will not be included for shared characters, as there is space for only five questions.

  • Children will not be introduced until the localized game is released, or we have gone through all of the first-generation characters.

  • We’re ignoring any class options the Avatar may give to Charlotte, as it introduces too many new variables.

  • There will not be Practicality polls for the Invisible Kingdom campaign.

  • I limited the Optimization/Practicality poll options to the promoted classes.

Berserker, always and forever. While she can do well in other classes, her mods and growths just scream berserker, and she makes the best one out of the first gen characters. 43 str, 32 skl and 35 spd, with a natural +20 crit (another +20 and +4 damage if her enemy is female), she's probably the hardest hitting first gen character in the game. Others can match her strength, and more can outspeed her, but nobody can beat her in both. In the third route she can pick up the oni class tree from Rinkah, giving her ogre strike for even more crit and counter to pile on the damage, and while risky, she's probably one of the better suicide counter units thanks to berserker's high HP and her low defensive stats maximising the amount of damage she'll take in that one hit while still leaving her likely to survive to activate counter. Probably not worth it in game but potentially nasty in pvp. For non-IK playthroughs, Pieri would be good to get her cavalier, although Berka's wyvern rider could be interesting. Deadly breath is always fairly nice, and overbearing might be useful, depends on how many mounted units you find yourself fighting.

Thanks to her mods she's very much in demand as a mother character for optimizing the kids, so really she's likely to only have a few options for her spouse class. Probably either outlaw from Flannel for that +7 str Velour, or cavalier from Xander to make Siegbert pretty good. She'd make a decent mother for Deere as well, but since she already has rod knight I don't think she'd gain a class from Jakob, so it doesn't matter for this thread. Cavalier would give her luna as a decent proc, and aegis for defence. The only decent skill from outlaw would be lucky seven I guess.

If you're not as worried about how good the kids are and just want to make Charlotte herself really good, then marrying her to Nishiki could be good idea to get breaking sky and flamboyant. Benoit would give her luna as a proc, in addition to pavise for defence.

Speaking of, while she's definitely best as a berserker, she could do pretty well as a general or a great knight as well. She won't be as tough as other generals and her speed mod will go to waste, but 41 str combined with 38/28 defences is nothing to complain about. Great knight has lower stats than general for the most part, but they're still good and she'd have high movement and the ability to manipulate the weapon triangle to her advantage. Other characters could do those classes better, and I definitely think she'd be best as a berserker, but if for some reason you don't want her to be one then those two classes are perfectly viable. She could also make a very well balanced hero as well, although again other characters might be better. 35 str/skl and 34 spd is pretty good though.

Unfortunately her natural reclass option, rod knight, doesn't do much for her. It might be worth going through strategist for battle command though, since she'll likely be in the thick of the action.

Edit- Wow that's a lot of words to say 'make her a berserker'.

I believe Flannel's secondary class is Fighter, actually.

Unfortunately her natural reclass option, rod knight, doesn't do much for her. It might be worth going through strategist for battle command though, since she'll likely be in the thick of the action.

However, Rod Knight also gives her Maid, and Maid gives her Tomebreaker. Considering that Charlotte's Achilles' heel is RES no matter what class you put her in, grabbing Tomebreaker can be a serious boon.

Charlotte also has the option to get Rally Resistance from Strategist as well as Battle Command. Since she gets Rally Strength by default from Berserker, you can make her a weird kind of "support-buff-murder-machine"; she doesn't really need skills to murder people, it just helps, so she can buff allies and still get some useful action in on the enemy phase.

Also, on the offchance you're marrying her to Lazward, she can pick up Stubbornness and Sol for enormous HP recovery and become virtually unstoppable.

So yeah... I don't think there's any question about whether Berserker is the best class for Charlotte. It's pretty freaking amazing in her hands. The only question is what KIND of Berserker you're going to make her. Charlotte makes Berserker into about ten different classes based on what skills she slaps together with it; she's pretty remarkably versatile that way.

It is, but he has a hidden class in outlaw for fringe S/A+ marriage/buddy seal purposes. Because Garou is a non-transferable class by marriage or friendship, only inheritance, for S/A+ Fighter is thus treated as Flannel's primary class on the giving end (Garou's still his primary when he receives, so he doesn't get anything in return unfortunately). Characters with Fighter as their primary, aka Harold and Charlotte, would then get his hidden tertiary class, which is Outlaw.

Thor already answered that so I won't go through it again.

This is true, I'd forgotten about that. Whether it's worth it or not will depend on your particular build, of course.

Hmm, it's certainly something she can do, but I'm not sure it's worth using a skill slot or two for rallies. She's one of the best actual fighters in the game, so it seems like a bit of a waste to skip combat, even once, to buff other units. Lazward would make a much better rally unit since it (apparently) works with his personal skill. Use the two of them together and we have good things happening.

Also, on the offchance you're marrying her to Lazward, she can pick up Stubbornness and Sol for enormous HP recovery and become virtually unstoppable.

Lazward is actually one of my favourite potential husbands for her from a characterization viewpoint since their support is hilarious, and Soleil would definitely benefit from having Charlotte as her mother. However, Charlotte can get sol on her own so she'd really only be getting stubbornness, she'd get bow knight as well, but frankly bow knight isn't great and doesn't give her any particularly useful skills. Sol is a good skill that I forgot to mention in my last post though, and it could synergize well with counter.

No arguments here. :P

Berserker for all, Dread Fighter for DLC, but honestly I'm just keeping her as a Berserker.

With her stats and ogre strike, she can easily get 80%+ crit rate.

Her HP is also amazing enough that she can tank attacks for me...

with Sol on her, I don't even need vantage because it doesn't even activate most of the time haha ~

plus she's a brilliant mother for Velour lol

^reading some of these posts above though, tomebreaker for her sounds awesome as well ! * U *

Does this mean this poll can continue? It's been more than a week.

I want to ask the permission of the poster of this topic to continue this polls in her absence. But it will no longer be called weeks but rounds.

I'll be continuing the weekly polls since Riku is currently on hiatus. So, on to the summary.

Please teach me how to add spoiler tags
