CappnRob
So I was reading on FE Wiki about Gaiden characters (because I've finally gotten my first contemporary FE in Echoes and was reading up on differences), and I noticed it said Jesse had higher than average growths for Gaiden: 190% vs the 150% of almost everyone else. This got me wondering, has anyone catalogued the average growth rates per game somewhere?
DolphinDingus
Awhile back, I found this Reddit post analyzing growth rates from FE6 through Radiant Dawn, along with Awakening. It is a pretty interesting analysis, showing how growth rates have been on an upward trend through newer games.
Interdimensional Observer
I tried doing some of my own analyses, they might be a little off and I haven't updated it for SoV (and I forget (Useful for getting an idea of acceptable growth variation range.) (Note, higher growths in Fates than in other games need be factored in, a larger difference is more tolerable to an extent with higher growths.) (Mind you, Odin is only okay as a unit- a potential speed machine, but with average at best strength, though enough magic for hybrid offense with a Levin Sword, as an SM. Or what is arguably the best Nosferatu tank (Asugi and Corrin might have a chance at being better). Saizo has hybrid offense, but lacks a magic base) (Also Setsuna does way better than marginally higher growths Hinata thanks to class that solves the hit issues, powerful bows, Quick Draw, critical chance, range 2, and constant doubling compensating for low strength. Fragility is meaningless for an Archer, Setsuna has a clearly defined role and serves it well. Nyx is similar, but her class doesn’t solve the accuracy issues quite as well. Hinata’s growths clash with his class’s role, and unlike with Rinkah, not for the better at all, as he can’t dodge, nor tank, nor double, nor hit powerfully, all that well. Rinkah, though still very hurting for her lack of HP, won’t be doubled, she actually can double slow things if her speed stays on her average, so she can tank physical hits, and her good skill compensates somewhat for the Bolt Axe’s poor hit, which she can use for okay offense while tanking.) It is a pretty interesting analysis, showing how growth rates have been on an upward trend through newer games. To some degree it's because Magic/Strength were added as stats that all units had growth rates in from Path of Radiance onward. But most physical units have terrible magic growths and most magic units have terrible strength growths, so on average it probably only added 5-10%. So the jump from SS to PoR was quite big. The growths in RD line up with how the stats from pre-FE9 would be with one new stat, so that makes sense. Awakening's a stupid jump, though, and it's part of the reason basically every unit is a super unit.

New Mystery arguably had the jump first. It seems weaker because unit GRTs have more room for variation, the game's atrophying of class growths on the other side of the physical/magical spectrum also dampens it, and the stat ceilings are ultimately lower. But the bar for "average growths" remains substantially higher than preceding games; just look at the good growths units and it becomes pretty obvious. Awakening's a stupid jump, though, and it's part of the reason basically every unit is a super unit. Remember that it is still an average, so the low percents being added to physical characters don't make much of a difference, since the total stats are being divided by 9 now instead of by 8. In fact, it arguably makes a difference more significant, because most units have crappy growths in their minor attacking stat. As far as Awakening, the stat caps are much higher, so it is somewhat justified. Also, the game sought to make every unit good, instead of having the occasional Wolt or Dorcas, which is admirable, and also is consistent with the intent to make a game more friendly for newcomers. This didn't stop tier lists from being made, of course. This time, though, the tier lists for Awakening are focused almost solely on skills and stat caps, instead of bases, availability, classes, and growths. This is true, but as you said, it has some things that make the higher growths seem less substantial.
KoimanZX
I am not sure how relevant this is but I have found that the difference in average HP growth between Awakening and Fates is pretty stark with the average base growths being 49.9 and 40.6 respectively. The gap is further exemplified by the fact that the most a class gives in Fates (the Beserker with +30%) is less than the least amount given by Awakening classes (+35% with the top growths being +60%). Even the class growths for the physical classes in Shadow Dragon give +30-80% (and magic users +20%, which is what the classes with a HP cap of 65 give in Fates). The point being that, while the average growths of characters have been rising (the growths in Echoes are much higher than they are in Gaiden), HP growths took a major hit in Fates. CappnRob
I find it interesting that post-Radiant Dawn character growths are now SEPARATE from class growths and the two are added together to get the final growth rates, and thus promotions can alter growth rates to a degree (Wrys loses 5% magic defense for example but gains slightly more magic in FE11). Stats caps. Enemy stats in Awakening adheres to the new caps which is higher than 20 on unpromoted and goes to super high amount promoted. In New Mystery you can actually reach cap in early mid game. New Mystery Caeda caps speed in like 4 level. You make a Kris with base 9 speed and iirc 55/60% growth and if you get speed level up everytime by the time Kris reach level 10 he is 2 level below caps. Promote this Kris during the beggining chapter 4, at level 13 and you get a max stats Dracoknight In other words New Mystery stats is every bit as crazy as Awakening if not for how much wasted stats you actually had. The only class that did not waste stats are mages(sub 40% growth) and Archer(0 base speed) 2. Awakening level curve is whack. New Mystery had fewer enemies to counter the ridiculous exp formula. Awakening not only laugh at that(Robin can level up 5 times in prologue iirc) you also reset into level 1 when you reach level 10 for the first time with second seals. You only need the exp required for maybe level 14 in other games to get 20 level in Awakening. 3. New Mystery characters is much stronger than Awakening character in a sense that if you fall off in Awakening its game over and the standard for New Mystery is lower. New Mystery character curves out in Glass Cannon -> Decent -> Glass Cannon format so if you have shit stats you can still hit pretty hard and attempt to catch up. If you can survive 1 hits its a good unit. If they survive 2 its amazing. Survive 3 and they are completely overpowered Compare Stahl in chapter 2 of Awakening to Draug as a Fighter in chapter 1 of New Mystery Stahl dies to everything and kills a normal mook in 5 hits. He is 7 speed away from doubling. Also he uses Bronze Sword and Bronze Lance because Awakening units are that kind of shit Draug at level 1 have 11 STR and 11 Speed. He is 3 speed away from doubling. He dies in 2 hits. His attack with Iron Axe is 18 which kills in 3 hits. Seriously speaking when you think about it Awakening have probably the weakest cast in the series Also pretty sure Defense and Res Growth is lower in FE12. Chrom is called a low res character and his res growth is 30. FE12 highest Def growth is 40 internal and 30 general growth. And General only allows you to get 15 DEF Edited October 4, 2017 by JSND Alter Dragon Boner
