The Crest Market is a place to make Crests, which are additional "skills" for characters. They can increase the length of a combo chain, lengthen the availability of the stun gauge, unlock the ability to promote, etc. You do not physically see Crests on your character. The Archer's Breastplate is one of many Materials dropped by enemies after you've defeated them. Materials are consumable items used to make crests.
