Shanty Pete's 1st Mate
As you probably know, Fire Emblem: Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, introduced Combat Arts: techniques that units could use with certain weapons or equippable items, to varied offensive and defensive effects. This system was expanded on in Fire Emblem: Three Houses: more choices for Combat Arts, now generally costing weapon durability rather than user HP. Most combat arts can be used with any weapon of a certain category (ex. Smash can be used with any axe), but some especially powerful ones can only be used on a certain weapon, by particular characters (ex. Apocalyptic Flame on Freikugel, limited to those with the Crest of Goneril - namely Hilda, assuming no NG+). These are generally limited to Hero's Relics, the principal class of Legendary Weapons in Three Houses. The question I'd like to pose is this: if Legendary Weapons from previous games had exclusive combat arts, what would they be, who could use them, and what would their effect be? For instance, here are ones that I've come up with for the Sacred Twins in Sacred Stones: Sieglinde Spoiler Blitzlinde Coursing with electrical energy, Sieglinde releases a thundrous strike against enemies near or far. Cost: 3 (30 -> 27) Mt: +0.3dex (16 -> 16+0.3dex) Hit: -10 (90 -> 80) Crit: +20 (0 -> 20) Range: 1~3 Effect: x2 Might against monsters. Deals magical damage (targets Res). Damage increases with Dexterity. Usable by: Eirika Siegmund Spoiler Feuermund Filled with fearsome fire, Siegmund burns through any foe, close or at a distance. Cost: 3 (30 -> 27) Mt: +5+0.3def (17 -> 22+0.3def) Hit: +20 (80 -> 100) Crit: +0 (0 -> 0) Range: 1~2 Effect: x2 Might against monsters. Deals magical damage (targets Res). Damage increases with Defense. Usable by: Ephraim Vidofnir Spoiler Blessing of the Clouds Summoning the power of the heavens, Vidofnir delivers a decisive strike that heals its wielder. Cost: 3 (30 -> 27) Mt: +5+0.3spd (15 -> 20+0.3spd) Hit: +10 (85 -> 95) Crit: +0 (0 -> 0) Range: 1 Effect: x2 Might against monsters. Restores HP equal to half of damage dealt. Damage increases with Speed. Usable by: Tana, Vanessa, Syrene, Gilliam Nidhogg Spoiler Serpent's Tongue All struck by this devilish shot from Nidhogg will feel their life drain away, as if crushed by a serpent. Inflicts Poison Strike (-20% HP), Seal Speed (-6), Seal Defense (-6), and Seal Resistance (-6) after combat. Usable by: Innes, Hayden Audhulma Spoiler Inescapable Ice Those struck by this frigid attack from Audhulma are chilled to the bone, and fixated in a frozen terror. Cost: 3 (30 -> 27) Mt: +0 (18 -> 18) Hit: +20 (85 -> 105) Crit: +0 (0 -> 0) Range: 1 Effect: x2 Might against monsters. Enemy cannot counter-attack. Enemy cannot move the turn after being attacked. Usable by: Joshua, Gerik, Marisa, Ismaire, Caellach Excalibur Spoiler Devastating Desert Wind Like a boomerang, the winds of Excalibur cross the desert and come back, for a dual strike few can outlast. Cost: 3 (30 -> 27) Mt: -5 (18 -> 13) Hit: +0 (90 -> 90) Crit: +10 (10 -> 20) Range: 1~2 Effect: x2 Might against monsters and fliers. Strikes twice consecutively. Cost: 3 (30 -> 27) Mt: +10 (20 -> 30) Hit: +10 (75 -> 85) Crit: +0 (0) Range: 1 Effect: x2 Might against monsters. Treats enemy Defense stat as 0 when dealing damage. Usable by: Duessel, Amelia, Vigarde Gleipnir Spoiler Banishing Shadow Hidden away on the last page of Gleipnir is a spell that obliterates man and monster with equal malice. Cost: 3 (30 -> 27) Mt: +5 (23 -> 28) Hit: +0 (80) Crit: +0 (0) Range: 1~2 Effect: x2 Might against all enemy types. Usable by: Knoll, Lyon Ivaldi Spoiler Breathtaking Luminescence Only those who keenly study Ivaldi's text can locate this spell, an entreaty for swift justice from the heavens against evil-doers. Mt: +0.3luk (17 -> 17+0.3luk) Hit: +10 (90 -> 100) Crit: +30 (5 -> 35) Range: 1~2 Effect: x2 Might against monsters. Adds +40 to user's avoid. Damage increases with Luck. Usable by: L'Arachel, Riev I have elected not to do one for Latona: it has so few uses to begin with, and I'm not sure what form a "combat art" with a staff would take. In any case, let me know what you think! Do these proposed combat arts sound overpowered, unimpressive, or just right? And what combat arts would you create for classic weapons, Legendary or otherwise? I look forward to reading your replies!
