  1. Fire Emblem fans should promote it with incomprehensible memes like Pikmin fans do, even if nobody understands them.

Cold Steel IV start of Act 3:

    Spoiler

Bleublanc deserves credit for being the unexpected MVP. There's whole ruckus all over the continent, which is the explanation as to why the Dominions, unseen Enforcers and other four Anguis aren't around. I was wondering why only four Enforcers were involved with this world-ending plot... I also think this is the first time the First and Fifth Anguis have been acknowledged outside the Celestial Globe, thank you Joshua. Roselia promises a big exposition dump at the end of the Luna Shrine, she sure knows how to keep me motivated.

After fighting Vita and Aurelia (I thought we would fight Bleublanc, personally), it turns out Roselia was the Holy Beast of Fire all along, sort of. It goes to explain why she's immortal when the rest of the Hexen Clan isn't, how she created Celine and Grianos, and the offhand comment about her meeting with Ragnard and Zeit.

The promised exposition dump discusses things like Rutger's revival, Georg's backstory, Dreichels and Lianne, reincarnation being is a thing now, a bunch of other things, and most importantly Mecha Satan. Honestly Arianrhod, I think you can do better than him. I guess it makes sense for The Curse to have a physical form for the heroes to beat up later.

The scene with Franz suggests that Black Alberich mindwiped himself to go undercover before Ishmelga reawakened his memories. Him already being affiliated with Ouroboros suggests that he wasn't some guy who Black Alberich "possessed", at least, or Alberich possessed him beforehand. I suspected that Alberich's memory manipulation was derived from Weissmann, but I wasn't sure who lifted it from who.

Anyway, the main point is that one knight needs to fuse with the rest of the knights for Ishmelga to eat it. Ishmelga's problem is that it could easily annihilate everyone, but doing so would make its goal unattainable, and it has to make itself vulnerable to become the Great One. Maybe Arianrhod is going along with the Great Twilight for a chance to destroy Ishmelga herself? It's time for Fie and Duvalie to use daughter no jutsu to recruit Rutger and Arianrhod to our cause. Perhaps Cedric wants to become a benevolent overlord with the Great One's power, while Rufus probably just wants to become a god or something.

Cold Steel IV end of Act II

    Spoiler

The reunion episode! The three main protagonists have finally met and the Trailsvengers have assembled. So this is why you have to play eight other games before playing this one... I wasn't expecting Rocksmith to show up again even if Prince Albert, Kloe, and Cassius returned, mostly because he's the head of the country Erebonia is trying to invade. There are plenty of fun character interactions and miscellaneous details mentioned, like Elie and Aurelia being distant relatives, Rean mentioning Anelace to Duvalie, Kloe being a gamer, Fie asking about Estelle and Joshua's... relationship. Sadly Rixia is busy elsewhere, so she and the SSS's other allies don't show up.

Mille Mirage is properly explained and it's basically every country mentioned up to this point uniting against Erebonia, with Cassius as the leader of the united army. I particularly liked hearing the breakdown of how many soldiers each country would be contributing. It's Erebonia vs. everyone! Wait, the villains want to start a world war big enough to awaken a dark god? So Cold Steel was just Radiant Dawn all along? Of course none of the protagonists agree to directly help, with them instead following a third path as Olivert wanted (which makes sense, since all three teams were friends with him).

After five games the Glorious is back, it's pretty hype. Unfortunately for the villains, they happened to crash the biggest gathering of chads in the entire series. Shirley got a well deserved bonking from Estelle. There's a boss rush for the ages; Mariabell and co. was the hardest fight though the hardest fight in the game so far was Michael and Class I, somehow. When it seems like the darkest hour for the heroes, it turns out reports of Olivert and Toval's deaths were greatly exaggerated. "Heroes always arrive late." -Masahiro Sakurai

I wasn't entirely convinced that Olivert actually died, since his body was never found, but the scene of his glorious (pun unintended) return was still hype. He even got a stylish eyepatch out of the experience. The villains probably would've been better off if Georg hadn't "killed" them, since they would never have left the radar in that case. But maybe Georg spared them on purpose?

While we fight about half of the villains in a boss rush, the other half show up to taunt us in a group chat afterwards. It got a bit crowded at some point... Also Victor is alive and an antagonist now; his current situation is compared to the Phantasma copies in Sky the 3rd, so he's compelled to oppose the heroes despite maintaining his personality. I was wondering "weren't the Rivalries supposed to happen already?" during Act II, but I guess the war has to start first. Osborne was nice enough to give us a deadline to stop him, at least.

Also I have properly completed Pikmin 2 this time (the main story at least, there's still side content I haven't done), since I went back for the last treasure I missed last week. Finally finishing a game I've had for so long makes me feel a bit empty inside... if only there could be a Pikmin 2-esque game releasing within the next few days.

At first i thought it was a goofy title but with the premise being "Japan got fucked up in the war, what if we fucked it up even further" makes the title more raw. Very curious to see how it turns out.

At first I thought the title was because it's set in an earlier time period than Godzilla 1954 ("Godzilla 1"), but it probably would've been called Godzilla Zero in that case.

Minus One is getting an American theatrical release on December 1st, so hopefully there will be a nearby screening so I can see it.

Anime trilogy went in the far other direction but it had a lot of wasted potential.

The anime trilogy could do whatever they wanted on account of being animated (even if the prequel novels were more interesting). In terms of the Japanese live action films it's just Destroy All Monsters ("at the end of the 20th century" or 1999 in the English version) and Final Wars (20XX). I think those two are a bit more futuristic than usual, but I haven't seen them recently enough to be sure.

I think I made it only as far as either the Giant Breadbug cave or the Emperor Bulbax one. I'm not entirely sure why I never went any further than that.

And for the final boss, that game guide I linked here months ago advised dropping all your 'mins far away from the big bad. Then take Yellows alone and destroy the electrical component.

When I never made it past the Glutton's Kitchen when I was younger, it was because I didn't have enough space on my memory card to save my progress.

That probably would've been a better idea that what I did. Though if you are using only Yellow Pikmin (since they're the only type that can consistently attack the Titan Dweevil's weapons), it would make sense to save the Shock Therapist for last because Yellow Pikmin are immune to it. The Monster Pump should be taken out first in that case, since it has infinite range.

Fortunately since I claimed all of the Titan Dweevil's weapons already, I don't have to fight it again when I return to the Dream Den for the treasure I missed.

Philips apparently specializes in healthcare technology now, so I wonder how it would turn out... Though the king in the Zelda cartoon was also named Harkinian, so I'm not sure how much of that applies to him.

  14. Cold Steel IV start of Act II

    Spoiler

With the Rivalry of the Seven properly explained (i.e. the method to reforge the Divine Knights into the Great One), it's finally established why Ouroboros/Vita went along with the civil war and what Ouroboros's plans in the last game were. There are still some mysteries, but now there's an explanation as to why Vita couldn't have Valimar and Ordine fight whenever and avoid the whole Cayenne business.

It's also established that Crow, Rutger, and Arianrhod were all revived through their connection with the Divine Knights (maybe Osborne too?). Crow fully expects to get a second death scene, but Rean has none of it and revives him. I'll admit that I was a bit concerned for a bit, but now Crow and Duvalie have officially joined the party, hooray.

I want say that Class VII has now officially reunited, does Millium count even though she's a sword? It looks like her soul is still in it, at least...

Since bonding events are now a thing again, are there any non-romantic final bonding events? Because maxing a character's bond level wouldn't mean much otherwise.

Also it turns out you don't need to bring Fie to Lamare to get the second Fishing tutorial in the help menu, since you get it later when [REDACTED] joins. And here I thought it would be gone forever...

You just have to watch RedLetterMedia reviews of movies they like. Like, uh... They were more positive about Godzilla: King of the Monsters than most critics, I think. And they mostly liked the Obi-Wan series, which people complained about.

    3 hours ago, Armagon said:

I think the devs flat out regret making the timeline an official thing tbh. What with BotW/TotK's exact placement being undetermined (is it at the end of one timeline or all) and TotK also throws another wrench into it as well.

As a result, I think any new games from now on will just follow the BotW/TotK timeline, likely with the same Link and Zelda. It'd be very strange to go back to the "Era of Myth".

I doubt the developers think about the timeline enough to regret it, they'll come up with the plot first and then figure things out afterwards. They probably won't use the same Link and Zelda forever either for the same reason (it would get in the way of the devs doing whatever they want).

I hear Pikmin 4 complicates the Pikmin timeline, I didn't think that was even possible.

  15. Cold Steel IV Fragments chapter

    Spoiler

So begins the great mission to save Princess Rean. I wasn't expecting the Black Workshop to be as important as it was before I played Cold Steel III, despite its existence being implied as early as Trails to Azure (Randy says his and Shirley's personal weapons were made by a "special workshop"). This is another dungeon where everyone is split into teams, which is neat.

Not satisfied with this segment only having two teams, Rean breaks out on his own. Also Celine is a catgirl now, I should've seen it coming. More importantly my boy Crow and my girl Duvalie officially join the heroes (even though they leave as soon as the next act starts, darn), the Doov redemption arc is real. "Even more pathetic than usu- WHO THE HECK?!" -Duvalie

Concluding the dungeon is a boss rush with half of the villains, and you thought Sky the 3rd's finale had a lot of bosses in a row? Hopefully you didn't need to change your equipment at any point. Afterwards Rean's mind gets fixed with friendship speeches from everyone (including Millium and Valimar, I miss them already).

Now that Osborne gets to be the main villain after eight games of buildup, we finally get to fight him for the first time. With Arianrhod fighting alongside him, it’s pretty climactic. But who would've expected him to wield the Soul Edge and be as strong as Arianrhod is (Ebon Awakener perks, most likely)? Now I need to think even more about the canon power tier list... The battle is tricky from a gameplay perspective as well, since you have to beat them both at the same time for max AP.

From what I gather, Rean's power is due to him being The Curse's chosen one, presumably a consequence of him being revived rather than always being "chosen". The next stage of the Evil Plan requires having the Divine Knights fight each other, not to mention the whole invasion of Calvard thing. It feels like the game hasn't "properly" started until now. Josette has come far enough to be capable of epic rescues, I'm so proud of her.

Also, I appreciate how big the Character Note is at this point. There can never be too many characters...

Sara had a few comments during the Lamare visit whenever North Ambria is brought up and she enjoys visiting the brewery, of course.

  18. Teehee teehee teehee, the next Fire Emblem should have mecha. I will not elaborate further.

Cold Steel IV end of Act I

    Spoiler

Besides more returning faces like Cecile and Vandyke, the Hayworths get another quest. It's not quite "Harold and Sophia lost their child again" because Colin ran away on purpose this time, and it develops their relationship in a way that doesn't involve Renne.

Sharon's new outfit is certainly something. Lechter gets an explanation as to why he and Claire are still working for Osborne but Juna is real sick of Campanella at this point. Leave him alone Junie, he's just a funny guy.

The Auric Knight finally appears after being awakened by Rufus, all seven of the Divine Knights are now active. Rather than something noble like "he left House Albarea to Jusis because he's the rightful heir", it turns out Rufus took charge of Crossbell to look for it, which explains his comment about the last Knight in the previous game. He's also notably more hostile than usual; is he drunk with power, or does he just have no reason to play nice anymore? The Legion of Doom probably requires all seven knights for their plan, so I wonder where things will go from here...

Along with the Brights and SSS, Bleublanc himself makes a beauteous return to help us out. It was probably the most hype moment in the game so far. Walter is also mentioned, but joins Rixia and Arios in the forever offscreen club. Class VII gets two new honorary members, now the daughters are all assembled.

Is Ash the first person to think Estelle is hot? It only took nine games for someone to find her attractive...

After being the setting for two spinoffs, it's cool that the party finally gets to visit Alster. Kai and Tilia also make welcome in-game appearances for the first time even though she beat me in Vantage Masters...

Lucy is back, remember her? She was in Moon Door 3, even Kloe was charmed by how pretty she was. I'm not sure who her friend is though (or if I'm supposed to know, but I'll probably feel really dumb when I find out), aside from her presumably not being Remiferian. Nielson is back too, you know it's the finale game when a bunch of random supporting characters return.

Musse reveals the last bits of her backstory and rejoins the party after some persuasion. Her plan seems to be having every other country gang up on Erebonia, but she'd prefer if Class VII helped her find a different way as unlike Edelgard, she prefers to avoid mass death if possible.

Cedric and Shirley are a match made in Gehenna (though I assume her heart still belongs to Rixia). He and Testa-Rossa are second on the list of Divine Knight fights, the Vermillion Apocalypse seems to have been purged somehow but Testa-Rossa retains some of its abilities. "Look at little Osborne Jr. Gonna cry?" -Ash, probably

Could War Elephants work in Fire Emblem? - General Fire Emblem - Serenes Forest Forums

Obscure biology fact: this was officially translated as "Pachyderm", which is a term used to describe thick-skinned hoofed mammals like elephants, rhinos, and hippos. Those animals aren't closely related like biologists previously thought, but the term is still sometimes informally used to describe creatures with such attributes.

Maybe Elephant Mario is actually a Pachyderm powerup, and Luigi will turn into a rhino or something.

FFXVI is barely out and there's its already making people seethe

To be fair, when's the last time a Final Fantasy game didn't make people seethe?

Never thought I'd see the day you'd defend Final Too Archetypal Fantasy.

David Menkin is in this one, so Armagon's willing to give it some credit.

  22. Social commentary

Trails's in-universe "fiction" novels got a bit lengthy at some point, so Three & Nine is the first one I've read in a while (probably not just because it's relevant to the next game). I've been reading it on Reverie's website however, and I'll look up the books I didn't read once I've caught up.

In hindsight, you probably didn't get far enough to know that. Olivier found out the hard way.

Isn't the timing really difficult to get precisely the color you want? I never quite understood the unexplained mechanic behind this. -Nor I did ever try for a specific color though.

Yoshi's color depends on how many minutes pass between when his egg starts following you and when it hatches. 0-6 minutes is green, 6-9 is red, 9-12 is blue, 12-15 is orange, 15-18 is pink, 18-19 is black, and 19-20 is white, after which the cycle resets. It would get a bit silly if it went over 20 minutes, so sadly they couldn't fit yellow, light blue, and purple in there.

The next game will reveal that Sara is secretly the Holy Beast of Booze.

I always thought Castlevania Adol looked cool.

  23. I can't believe they included the Super Smash Bros. speculation OC in a game.

I'm glad that Yoshi seems to be independently playable in a mainline Mario game for once. The talking flower amuses me more than it probably should.

Wait how do you even know I brought her? My spoiler tags!

You didn't spoiler tag that part.

    or you could git gud

I'm afraid that's not an option.

Sara is the best Trails girl, so I support this.

I'm pretty sure there's some funny anecdote as to why you like Sara which is odd because you didn't like the other drunk, not that I remember what it is.

Friggin' Death took a moment to call Charlotte a child. I don't think anything could've topped that, except perhaps Dracula doing it, and Dracula's design alone hit the ridiculous quota with flying colors.

To be fair Death is at least hundreds of years old, all humans should be children by his standards.

tbf they've been waiting for long

True! I'm glad Pikmin 1 and 2 were rereleased, but it's a shame they removed Duracell...

And hope for a Thousand Year Door Remake down the line...or i could emulate it. Always wanted to play that game.

It lets you get Orange Yoshi as a partner so it's good. Though I might like Super Paper Mario more, despite the lack of Yoshi.

  24. You can only bring one old Class VII member to the next location, hmm...

I think Sooks picked Fie at this point, so I'll do something different and bring Sara instead (and also, you didn't get to use her much in Act I of CSII). If sub-Master Quartz didn't exist I might've brought Elliot, but now I can use Alteeny as a healbot instead.

You know I always liked Gilbert. I thought he was pretty well-written. Always wondered why the fans of Three "100 Shades of Gray" Houses were so militant in hating him when he's as gray as the game's characters get.

Well you see, he isn't young or hot enough to make up for it.

Let's do something completely off the rails: Payday 3 on the Switch announcement. Fuck it.

It's either that or spending another decade waiting for Pikmin 5, so sure.

Or a sequel hook to a third game. Since that can also be a thing. At least, at the time the game released.

I got it, the third game could be set in Archanea 2000 years later and be called Fire Emblem Awakening...

  25. Hey it's me Lightchao42 coming at ya with a review of the weird Falcom miniseries Minna Atsumare! Falcom Gakuen. I didn't understand anything that happened, but Rixia was in it so it's a 20/10. American Ys III Genesis boxart Adol was my favorite character.

    Cold Steel IV Act I-1

    Spoiler

Anton finally makes a return after not being in Azure or Cold Steel III (as far as I know, anyway). He's been corresponding with Sharon for a while and he's worried that she cut contact with him, so his reasons for being in Erebonia are pretty understandable.

Also returning is the man, the myth, the legend himself, Gilbert. You know this is a finale game when Gilbert of all people is back, but I never expected to fight him in Hamel of all places. Ouroboros's standards must be pretty low if he's still around, maybe he's the head of his squad because Campanella thought it would be funny? Although Gilbert is statically only slightly weaker than Leonidas and Xeno, so maybe he is decently strong but just incompetent.

The arbitrary requirements for AP make a return from CSII (Xeno and Leonidas pioneering those fights, in fact), this one occurring after another relatively time-consuming boss fight. At least they tell you what to do for AP this time, and what counts as a "turn".

I wasn't expecting to fight one of the Divine Knights so early, I suppose they had to make up for Rean not fighting any of them in the previous game. As such, we'll probably fight two more in the following two area revisits (Ordine and Argreion, maybe). The Auric Knight still hasn't shown up, perhaps it doesn't even have an Awakener yet.

Ash is back after getting a pep talk, but in exchange Randy has left the party. A soul for a soul... at least we can still cook recipes with him.

Also something for @Armagon, the Twitter account for the next Godzilla film started counting down the live-action Japanese movies last week. It's on Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla presently, so there should be an announcement of some kind on July 11th.
