  1. In case it's of any interest, I did a thread a couple years ago rating every possible pairing. If you want the brief rundown of what are, in my opinion, the "best pairings":

    Spoiler

    Edain - Midir

    Ayra - Chulainn

    Lachesis - Beowulf

    Silvia - Claud

    Erinys - Lewyn

    Tiltyu - Azelle

    Brigid - Jamke

Mind you, these aren't my favorite pairings, and I'm not suggesting going for all of them. Just the ones I assessed to be at the ideal intersection of efficiency and performance.

Patty's sub is fine, but Faval's sub is lame.

Agreed. Daisy having Miracle is actually really cool, as it lets her get more Arena wins than most versions of Patty. And if you give Gold after every Arena win, bam, that's 70 EXP right there. But Assaelo... yeah, you can stop after the third letter.

Beowulf is indeed standard, since he passes down Pursuit and swords to Diarmat.  Magic swords from Azel are probably more fun.

I did this one, and thought having "pseudo Mage Knight Diarmuid" was a fun gimmick. He'll do worse in the Arena, for the asinine reason that magic swords don't work there. But pass him a 50 kill Brave Sword, and he can just cleave through anyone.

The tempting "meme pairing" is Lachesis x Claud, so Nanna can use Warp, Physic, and Status Staves. Plus Diarmuid gets boosted Res, and... no Pursuit! So not worth it.

Except for the part where you tell him to let Finn keep the Brave Lance. Whereas the meta would be to sell it to Erinys.😜

I cannot stress enough how great having the Brave Lance in chapters 4, 5, and 6 is. It's probably the third- or fourth-best weapon in the game, absolutely revolutionizing the combat ability of whoever is using it. Erinys is the most obvious, but a promoted Alec or Naiose can make excellent use of it as well. Hell, it's one of promoted Arden's best options, if you're a masochist. Obviously it should end up with Erinys, so Fee brings it in the second generation.

When she said "no protesting", she absolutely meant it.

I was going to say. Fee can't even inherit the Silver Lance, so surely, the optimal, the ltc pro route would've been to give her/Erinys the Brave Lance and the Silver Lance to Finn.

There are actually two playable Silver Lances in the game, both obtainable by chapter 3. Finn can take one, but only if promoted, while Quan can take one regardless. Best play is probably Finn gets one (if promoted), while the other stays in Gen I (for use by Erinys, promoted Arden, or promoted Lachesis). Although it cannot be inherited, it can be bought back in chapter 9. Which is the very chapter you would be getting Altenna, anyway.

One more thing - I do like Quan passing down his Javelin. So that Altenna will attack at range, and you can bait her in without her saying "it's Gae Bolgin' time!". But you only get two Javelins in Gen I, so it's a tough call between Finn keeping the other one, or your native Lance users getting to use it in chapters 4 and 5, with Fee inheriting it in 6.

Depends what you're counting as a bow user. If you include Silver Knights, then Oscar and Geoffrey and Fiona both take less effort to get ready for the Tower. But they're also capped at A rank for bows, which means that they can't use the Double Bow and are probably going to just pretend they're still lance-locked.

I thought about them, but then started double-thinking: "Wait, do people even bring Silver Knights to the Tower"? Even though the Tower is relatively friendly to cavalry (no ledges, no indoor movememt penalty), I know people rag on their caps a bunch, as a reason not to bring them. I've probably brought Oscar to the Tower before, though, since he can give his A Earth support to... well, anyone else, but especially Ike or another Greil Merc. And Geoffrey seems like he'd do... fine, I guess. Definitely lower-effort than Rolf, although arguably with a lower performance ceiling than him.

Tibarn is honestly excellent, but I'm still scratching my head at how he was once my MVP. I think I just had him kill basically all the reinforcements in his Part IV Maps. Thus inflating his kill count, because Part IV cut the brake lines when it came to reinforcements.

  3. 11 hours ago, Shadow Mir said:

Really? Because I'd argue the exact opposite. Rolf was TERRIBLE in PoR because bows sucked, and he came underleveled.

    Advantages Rolf has in PoR:

    Spoiler

    - An exclusive weapon

    - Availability: he's not living in Shinon's shadow for most of the time

    - Boyd and Oscar are better than in RD, so it makes sense to raise all of them and use the Triangle Attack

    - Bows do effective damage against Wyverns. Also he faces more Birds in this game than in RD.

    - Uh... PoR is just an easier game than RD in general

    Advantages Rolf has in RD:

    Spoiler

    - Crossbows exist, and absolutely murder enemy Pegasi and Birds

    - Better Bows in general, like the Silencer and the reformed Double Bow, doing triple-effective damage

    - 3-range attacking as a Marksman

    - Innate Bond Supports with Boyd, Oscar, and Shinon (wait, did these exist in PoR too?)

    - Base stats that don't make me want to reflexively vomit

    - 75% Strength growth (boy's been eating his Wheaties)

    - What other Bow users is he competing with, Astrid? Leo? Unironically he's the second-most tower-viable Bow user in the game.

So yeah. Rolf isn't a good unit in either game, but he's definitely better in the sequel. All this conversation makes me want a playthrough with MVP Rolf, haha.

  4. I'd love to see an expanded version of Smash Run. Make it a larger environment, with new enemies and weapons. Allow up to 16 players at a time, all on the same field. That way, if you come up against another player, you can fight them to erase their boosts.

After the competetive field portion, there would be two rounds: one with four four-player matches, and then "finals" of a single four-player match, populated by the winners. Three stage picks would be offered, with four players deciding between them, and decided randomly in the case of a tie.

  5. I tend to think of "investment" as being "EXP", "stat boosters", and "promotion items". Maybe you could add "forges" and "skill scrolls" to the list. But time is an interesting way to look at it, and not necessarily a wrong one.

Broadly speaking, I would consider an "investment unit" to be one that underperforms at first, but can become on-par with (or even superior to) units who overperform at join time. Lachesis in FE4 is one such example - she starts with poor combat, infantry mobility, and limited staff access. But when she promotes, all of these issues are solved, and she becomes one of your best units. So, if you can practically choose between giving EXP to her, or giving it to a "competing" unit, Lachesis will almost always be the better choice.

Lehran is F Tier (can't even attack without devoiding another unit of their ability to attack! What the hell is that!?).

Not even a bad take. I'd much rather go a "playthrough without Lehran" than a "playthrough without <insert other unit here>". Even Astrid has her uses in the 2.5 Crimean Royal Knight maps.

That's how I figure it, too. I'm not much of a computer sleuth so I figured I'd ask around a bit before I go off on my own to try work it out manually, see if anyone else has figured out what the flag is for dead or alive, and save myself from trying to brute-force it with a pretty limited understanding. I'm not asking anyone to go out of their way for me, of course, but I would've felt like a real fool if I spent a long time trying to work it out only to discover it was already known somewhere.

Maybe folks in the "Fan Projects" subforum would know? Anyone who has made a hack of Thracia 776 - or even a fanslation project, like "Li'l Manster" - would be your best bet.

    4 hours ago, Beetlejuice said:

While I agree in most instances, on this one I feel I failed in my duty as a navigator to give him the ideal Thracia experience, which involves going to 8x and seeing that content.

I... guess I don't understand the function of a "navigator" in a "blind ironman". If the player is getting advice from someone familiar with the game, then it's hardly a "blind" experience. But if you want to continue offering advice, then I think the player needs to expect that you won't give 100% information for every eventuality. It's just not possible.

  7. Do you mean that your friend isn't able to go to 8x, because Tanya died? If so, I would say that's just one of the aspects of playing an Ironman. If a chapter has certain access conditions, and the player fails to satisfy them, then they don't get to go to that chapter.

If you do want to "fix" the situation, though, then I don't think adjusting Tanya's HP is the way to go about it. It's not as though she'd rejoin in 8x with whatever HP she had at the end of chapter 3, for instance! Rather, her death likely set off a "flag" somewhere. With that flag raised, 8x is no longer available. If you can find the flag, and "lower" it, then 8x should become playable. With Dagdar and Tanya rejoining as usual.

I think giving them more varied default weapons would help them stand out though.

In retrospect, this was a bad argument on my part. I erroneously conflated "class diversity" with "unit diversity". Your proposed change would increase the latter, but at the cost of the former.  Since "Sword Armor" is obviously less different from "Mercenary" than the vanilla "Lance Armor" is.

I do wonder how this would work with the existing "anybody can reclass into anything" system. Like, would "Axe Armor" Dolph be able to reclass into "Lance Armor"? And if I reclass Ogma into an Armor knight, would it be the default "Lances only", or one of your proposed specialized versions?

I'm broadly a fan of mounted and armored units having separate variants for different weapon types - FE4 and RD are two of my favorite games, after all - but I don't think it meshes especially well with DSFE's reclassing system. But if we were creating a game from the ground up with less reclassing - or none at all - then I think the variants would be a good inclusion.

Yes I was misremembering there. He is indeed present from the start in the south east. There are cavaliers and horsemen reinforcements that do attack you from behind that I was confusing with him. On the subject of Parthia, Heimler being a bow knight with it was exactly what I suggested on my Archanea rewrite thread I posted a few weeks back. I was happy with that idea and thought it was my own, but now I'm seeing Emperor Hardin first suggested it in this thread 😞 though at least it was me who first suggest one of the bosses use it against the player.

Interestingly, with this change, all the legendary weapons would start out in enemy hands, since:

    - Falchion is in Gharnef's inventory,

    - Parthia is now on Heimler, who suddenly has relevance,

    - Hauteclere comes on enemy Minerva,

    - Gradivus is Camus' weapon of choice, and

    - Mercurius is in the hands of "enemy" Est before she self-recruits.

It's weird how Archanean Generals went from Sword locked to lance locked, to Lance Bow.

The designers were obviously going for "every pairing of physical weapons has at least one class representative":

    Sword/Lance Paladins

    Sword/Axe Heroes

    Sword/Bow Horsemen

    Lance/Axe Dracoknights

    Lance/Bow Generals

    Axe/Bow Warriors

So, while Lance/Bow Generals sound weird, they were presumably created to fill a void.

That's why I'm not personally on board for Shadow Dragon needing Axe cavalry, or Sword Generals. You can already reclass your Cavalier into an Axe-using class, or your Armor Knight into a Sword-using class. Decoupling weapon access from class identity just waters down the distinctiveness of each class, in a game where any given unit already struggles to stand out.

Huh? I'm pretty sure Heimler is there from the very start of the map. He doesn't show up later as a reinforcement.

Anyway, I'd be fine with the player having to go out of their way to get Parthia. That's already the case with Gradivus, which the player can totally miss by skipping Camus. In this proposed instance, just make Heimler a Horseman.

  13. Hm... I do like the idea of fusing! There are a few questions I still have, however:

    - Would Fusion happen inside battle, or outside of it? Like, the canon fusions (i.e. Kyurem Black, Dawn Wings Necrozma) occur outside of battle, and each takes up one slot. Would your proposed fusions function this way, or would it be activated mid-battle, like Mega Evolutions?

    - Similarly, would there be any limit to Fusing? Like "only one Fusion on a team at a time", or "each Fusion requires two party slots"? Or is it a free-for-all?

    - Is "Venusaur fused with Blastoise" identical to "Blastoise fused with Venusaur"? Or does the order of operations make any difference?

    - Split evolution lines could present a problem. Like, if I tried fusing Gloom with Chansey, would I get "Blissey-Vileplume"? Or "Bellosom-Blissey"? Or, in such a case, would Fusion simply not be allowed?

    - Is there a specific, bespoke list of "Fusions" that are possible to do, like with Mega Evolutions? Or would two Pokemon be fusable regardless, so long as they share an Egg Group?

I definitely think Fusion is a super-interesting concept. But with how many Pokemon there already are, things could really get out of hand in short order!

  14. Oh man, thank you for the reminder about Mage Girl Day! It's nine months away... that should be just enough time to put my Micaiah cosplay together. Assuming we all make it through the end of the world, that is.

The .org wiki has a short paragraph about this:

The term パレス Palace is used to refer to a city in Japanese, but the English localization interpreted as referring to the building specifically, hence the localization of "The Palace". When necessary to refer to the building, the terms パレス城 Palace Castle, or sometimes パレスの王宮 Palace of Palace, are used.

Other than 王都パレス the royal capital of Palace, terms used to refer to the city are 聖都パレス Palace, the holy capital and 黄金の都パレス Palace, the golden capital.

パレス has traditionally been translated as "Pales" (a Roman deity) in fan translations, and the term can indeed either be a transcription of the English word "palace" or a transcription of the name of the Roman deity "Pales" (along with an asteroid named after the deity, 49 Pales).

I was wondering about that when playing, too - if I read "Pales" in an English text, I'd assume that it's pronounced "Pails", but as a German speaker, "Pah-less" sounds perfectly fine, too.

Interesting, good to know. I didn't know the kanji for "castle" or "palace", so I wouldn't have necessarily picked up on that. At the same time, when we see a chapter titled

It's no surprise that パレス was interpreted as "Palace" by fan localizers. Incidentally, if we ever get a formal localization of the city's name, I'm hoping for "Pallas". That would keep the Greco-Roman theming - as "Pallas" is a title for Athena, among other meanings - while also having a more intuitive pronunciation.

Archanea's holy capital of Pales is currently in the middle of a mysterious silence.

If I recall, there's been some debate over whether "Pales" was intended to be the name of the capital of Archanea... or instead, simply the word "Palace". Like, chapter 12 of SD is titled "The Ageless Palace", or in Japanese, アカネイア・パレス. "アカネイア" is "A-ka-ne-i-a", or "Akaenia", which became "Archanea". While "パレス" would transliterate as "Pa-re-su" or "Pa-le-su".

If that's the way they wrote "Pales" in the original game, my assumption is that they're just referring to the Palace. If I wanted to name a city "Pales" - assuming it's pronounced like "two pails of water" - I would've written it as "ペールズ", or "Pe-e-ru-zu". That said, I haven't played the game in its original Japanese (or at all LOL), so I can't say how they wrote "Pales" to begin with.

I can't believe I missed Gravity Falls! I was even rolling around its daughter series - The Owl House and Amphibia - in my head, just to conclude they don't really fit. The Loud House came to mind, although that one's a struggle because, while any one of the sisters can be a "main character" for a single episode, it's hard to say that any one of them is a "main character, all the time".

I find it weird and a bit tiring that, whenever siblings appear in popular media, they are evil siblings the vast majority of the time. There is a ton that can be done with a story where the siblings are main characters that are on the same side, yet the only examples I can think of are Edward & Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Asta & Yuno from Black Clover.

Since we're on a Fire Emblem forum, I'd be remiss not to add Sacred Stones onto the list.

First of all, why is it even called Blazing? Well the only possible answer is that the chapter where you get the Durandel in Binding Blade is referred to as that, and I don't get that either! Sure, the chapter has fire in it, but you don't see the blade go up in flames like you do with, I dunno, the Binding Blade.

This part, I agree with. Why is Durandal called "The Blazing Blade"? It has no visible affinity to fire. Closest I can think is the fact that you acquire it from an active volcano. Still, I think a name like "The Gleaming Blade" or "The Piercing Blade" would be just as appropriate, while avoiding any confusion with the Binding Blade. Y'know, the sword that spits fire?

I'm gonna disagree here. Sure, the player doesn't get to make much use of Durandal. Even when acquired, its atrocious weight stat doesn't help its case. However, it has a story signficance, as you mentioned.

    Spoiler

The Sword is what slays Ninian, in her Ice Dragon form. In so doing, it replicates the violent conflict of the past. Man against Dragon. The scars from the past reopen, and rapprochement between the two kinds seems an impossibility.

Bathed in the shadow of Ninian's death, and filled with guilt over what he's (sort of) done, Eliwood gives Durandal back to Athos. But in the final hour of battle, he takes the Sword back up. Just as Nils will aid his friends in spite of his grief, so too will Eliwood. A better future is possible, but only if they work together and make it happen.

So, yeah. While I wish Durandal had a different name - one whose initials weren't also "BB" - I think it's story role has enough thematic significance to make it a titular object.

Nope, it's a "hot potato". Only the last one holding Armads is in trouble. Try to bring an Axe user you don't care about to the endgame of FE6, just in case.

Obviously it's meant to parallel Binding Blade...maybe theres' something going on with Ninian being revived when slain with Durandal, and Idoun not dying when slain with the Sword of Seals.

I think Ninian's revival just came down to "Bramimond is magic". Perhaps he had an ersatz Aum Staff? Regardless, I don't think there's anything special about Durandal that would "preserve" Ninian. It's not as though he extracts her from the blade, or anything of the sort.

  21. I wonder - would a far-off-into-the-future sequel to Three Houses even need to canonize any particular route? The four routes have some key commonalities - they all see the continent united into a single political entity, Teach always survives as a major influence, and both the Nabateans and Agarthans broadly displaced from their positions of influence. A "centuries later" sequel could lean into these commonalities, without explicitly stating which side won. Maybe a successive ruler of a united Fodlan saw continuing tensions over the war, and instituted a heavy-handed "damnatio memoriae" in an attempt to pacify and unify the people?

Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude might be mythologized as "friends who all saw flaws in the status quo, turned enemies based on their disagreements on how to change it, leading them into a bloody war where came at each other's throats". Teach could be "the stoic teacher whose belief in their students turned a tragedy into a new beginning for Fodlan". There could still be individual "cults" or "churches" associated with each figure - and maybe a revived (?) "Church of Seiros", too - that are all fighting this sort of "history war" with each other.

What I think could be an interesting direction, though, would be to really push into the direction of magitech. There's already a decent amount of this in Three Houses, with stuff like the Titanus, so I think the setting is ripe for completing a full on magepunk future with automata, ornithopters, magic laser swords, and so on. I'd be down for that sequel as well, even if it would be very different from my original idea.

Hm, perhaps Morfis could be the center of this "magitech" industry? We obviously never get to see it in vanilla 3H, but we know their country to have a strong association with magic. It would make sense for them to develop new spells, as well as magical weapons, and even more advanced versions of the Golems or Titanus. In any case, having a plot that visits Morfis, Dagda, and Albinea - or whatever their names are in the future - would be a welcome expansion to the world of 3H, IMO.
