(Aw...remember to relax, but stay motivated--senior year in college is no joke! D: ) What immediately came to mind was the five elements: earth, water, fire, metal, wood. Uh, I don't have much experience in composition, but let's see... The first one looks like the knight is sneaking up on the dragon--I don't think it really works as a battle scene as is. But hey, maybe that's what you're going for? Right now the wing looks like it's on the same plane as those pointy rocks, and it looks a little off. The left side in general seems kind of awkwardly parallel. Also, the lightest area is drawing attention to the dragon's feet, so maybe put something there, or move the light. And I think the back half of the dragon could be pushed back more, to make it look more intimidating. Personally, I vastly prefer the second one at this point. It's really lovely, especially the colors and your brushwork! :D Two things that come to mind are: -Move, change, or leave out the green thing in the middle; it's almost dividing the composition in half. -Clarify the posture of the figure in the foreground. I'm not sure if the person is standing on a slope or if there's a tilted camera here. If it's the latter, the background may need to be tweaked to reflect that. Awesome update, though. Your coloring skills are fantastic!
  2. Personally I like the scar idea, but you're going to have to change the execution of it a bit. Either make it a little bigger and more faded, like with Vaida, or add some darker shades and thin it out towards the ends--Legault's an example for this. Right now the shading there is a little uniform. Also that strand of hair hanging by her ear doesn't really make sense. It looks like it has enough weight to fall forward, not connect at an odd angle to the relatively weightless hair in the back (at least not without some sort of hair ornament there). Other than that and the points in the post above, it's a pretty nice, clean splice. I like the design.
  3. I looked up images of the World Series trophy because of this and...now I can't unsee it.
  4. Since the developers were working under the assumption that Awakening would be the last FE game ever, I think it'd be cool if they treated the next FE game as a fresh start on the series--my vote's for a completely new setting. Don't know if that's a good idea for sales, though. Of course, I'd really prefer a Gaiden remake with some good writers on board, but...
  5. Aw, hope your classes go well for you. I love your characters' poses and expressions! They all seem like people that would be fun to hang out with. Don't know if this is helpful at all, but I think you could afford to be more bold with your color choices for paintings like that 2nd pic in your post. The colors seem a little watered down, like they were all picked through...using the multiply brush with purple paint or something. :/
  6. ^That. Also, bring Thor's near arm, especially the forearm, down so that it looks like he's aiming to stab Loki rather than high-five him on the forehead or something. This isn't really a pose suggestion, but I think the scene would look much better if you made the viewing angle on the two characters more extreme. Like, side views on both, or putting the camera behind one of the characters--it depends on what you want to convey. Since you're planning on moving Thor even further away, Loki perhaps shouldn't look like he's already started his attack. Have him look like he's winding up, maybe put the spear(?)head behind him. And plant both feet on the ground. I'm not acquainted with how to use weapons, but I think his stance would look better that way. Also, where is Thor coming from? Depending on the answer, your poses could end up very different. It looks great so far though and has a lot of potential. Looking forward to the final result!
  7. You were pretty active back on FEND. Also, you might be in the minority of members on SF who post regularly but don't keep changing their usernames to something completely different. XD Haha, yeah, I admit I was out of my comfort zone with the face here. Out of curiosity, how do you think the face could look more like Vanessa? I use Photoshop 7.0, which I had for...about eight years. It's kind of outdated and hardly recommended for painting, but I'm comfortable enough with it at this point. Thanks! I actually struggle with skin colors too, especially the lips. Most of the time I just keep mixing colors at various blend modes until I luck out. It's a bad habit since I don't really learn anything that way. The method here was: B&W underpainting, then monochrome-ish color painting through a color blending layer/photoshop variations tool, then a few overlay/color layers at various opacities on top, and finally a layer on normal blending mode for touch-ups. It's easier for me to work on form/lighting/values with B&W underpaintings, but my coloring still isn't strong enough to work with them--I probably won't do as many pieces using this method in the future. The overlay method might look better if one or two colors really tie together the rest of the piece, which didn't happen here. Haha, I can relate to wanting to learn about digital painting. I would geek out more about this sort of thing, but this post is getting a little long as it is. :P Agreed, FE characters, or at least the younger ones, do need more recognizably different faces.
  8. Not gameplay or story related, but the female mage/Linde's battle animation in FE1 and 3. Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, since it's been years since I played those games and I can't find the animation online, but it sure looked like someone got the bright idea to animate a wardrobe malfunction and nobody questioned it. Also, small items such as vulneraries, rings, scrolls, gems, etc. taking up item slots. So, 5 door keys apparently take up the same amount of space as, say, 5 axes or something.
  9. Okay, I think this is it for now on Vanessa. While doing this, I've realized that I never bother trying to draw conventionally attractive women, but FE8 calls Vanessa beautiful, so...eh. Now, on to drawing more peg knight-related characters...
  10. Ah, I see. It's pretty awesome that you were experimenting with your art there, though! Loving the use of color on the Vocaloid pic, especially the red and black. By the way, are these last two pics indicative of a new trend in your works, or is that just a coincidence?
  11. Haha, that's kind of like what I do too. I think it worked out great for you in that pic! Hope to see more of your work. Your gallery is great because and it's full of glorious muscles.
  12. Sigurd's personally my favorite character, but I wouldn't really defend his personality or anything. He shares several characteristics with other lords, to be honest. Though, unlike other lords, he takes advice from a 14-year-old boy rather than some seasoned tactician, so there's that... I was under the impression that FE players don't generally find Roy's personality cool, but I'm not really up to date on whatever goes on among the fans. Liking a fictional character is a pretty subjective matter, anyways. Most of the FE scripts and supports are online nowadays, so people can even form opinions on characters without having to spend time playing the games! As for favorites, I think I'd put Gonzales, Dorothy, Echidna, Canas, Farina, and Louise somewhere on my list. Maybe Wil, Legault, and Matthew as well. And it's probably the nostalgia speaking, but I'll always like Lyn and the Caelin group in general.
  13. Great speedpaint. I like how you draw hair; it always looks so flowy and soft. In your video, you seemed to have started painting light-on-dark, but then started over and switched to dark-on-light. Were you trying a different painting method there? I thought your initial painting was really impressive, actually! :3
  14. Cool Thor design! I really like how you did the scalemail and the hair in this one. Out of curiosity, what are some of the coloring techniques you mentioned in your post?
  15. Nice work. Your experimenting with values and colors is really paying off! I especially love the colors on Liyasha, Nauri, and Cyrona. They do a great job of tying the portraits together. I could easily see each one fitting into a larger piece with backgrounds and such, if you wished to try out those palettes again. Mouths at angles...okay, I have trouble with this as well, so read at your own risk. Some might suggest envisioning the lips as if they were on a tuna can, like here. I personally prefer to imagine the mouth wrapped around a horseshoe shape, which reflects the shape of the jaw and the teeth. The green section in this post kind of talks about that a little more. Also, the center and middle of the tuna can/horseshoe shade usually protrude a little more than the rest. It helps to draw out the jaw/simple horseshoe and connect it to the ears. Then you can try placing mouths at different angles and expressions.
