  1. I agree with everything said about the Weapons Engraving UI, it really needs to show which weapon and on which character clearing, atm its so difficult to keep track of.

It would also be nice to have a way of checking a unit's internal level, as it can get a bit messy if some units have gone through more reclassing than others. Looking at stat total is kinda iffy. It's hard to tell if a character is doing poorly if it's because they're underleveled or because of bad level ups.

  2. Erika's ranking I think is probably more dependent on if you're playing Maddening. On Hard I felt she didn't make too much of a difference whereas on Maddening I think she really shines with the stat inflation

I also think Roy is a bit underrated depending on how much you value that flat +6 str the ring give and Hold Out is really expensive to buy

Micaiah is probably on a league of her own. I think what often gets over looked (because of her busted Engage Skills and she gets given to Hortensia who already has S rank staves) is the Ring's ability to give A Rank staves to anyone.  You can put it on a unit that doesn't naturally have staves or to use it boost a class with a low C staff rank. She's pretty much insurance for the player to access high rank Staves lategame if anything happens.

I got a question about Céline.

Considering her growth rates, wouldn't it be better to switch her to maybe a sword fighter=>swordmaster? She has higher Str growth than her Mag, she also has good Res and Luck. Or maybe different Str based class? I'm really considering reclassing her on my maddening run considering all of this. (And partialy because I hate her noble=>vidame outfit XD )

For reclassing Celine, I think she does well as a Sword Griffon. I'm only mid game atm, but it's feeling pretty solid. It keeps good magic, str and res growths, and better dex and spd growth than Vidame. I find it quite versatile on her. Staff access is nice and breaking with sword advantage is also pretty good, she's got me out of a few pickles. Early game you can forge a Levin Sword to take advantage of her magic stat so levelling isn't that troublesome

  4. They story is not great lol. I switched off early on and took it as a comedy, as I like how it's a bit more light hearted. I wonder if they had all the maps thought out first and struggled bridging point to point. imo FE is never known for having amazing plot, it's just for Engage is just far more obviously dumb, unlike say 3H (and don't get me wrong, excluding Echos, I think 3H has the best plot post Awakening despite it's issues)  It's funny to see people praising 3H's plot as almost immaculate, when I remember there being a ton of crazy discourse over 3H's story and routes during it's release. People were writing thesis for it.

Some heavy moments were a bit cringe, when Marni died (why did she have to be a loli?? I couldn't take it seriously at all), when you got resurrected, and evil mommy in Ch25. That was supposed to be a sad moment, but was just so ridiculous. The whole thing was wild, but I don't hate it. Then at the very end they had that power rangers moment with all the FE Protaganists was hype, and so cheesy, but I loved it. It was really cool to see them all lined up like that, really makes you feel FE has come a long way.

I hate how they sorta tried to make us feel sorry for the fel dragon? Screw him. Glad he died.

Yeaaah that sucker can stay dead. The way he cruelly killed his children, his perspective on family, how he treated Veyle and the portag in the past, there's no coming back from that. I can't believe they would try to make us feel sorry for him. Screw him. I also did not like how they wanted us to feel sorry for Zephia and Griss, really after everything they did to us. That cut scene with them talking about family was really awkward. We never had any build up before hand compared to Mauvier.

Lyon from FE8? Though he's more a victim than anything. And at the risk of enraging part of this fanbase, Edelgard?

But yeah, FE doesn't have the best track record with villains.

Berkut in Echos was decent if he counts. Hardin in New Mystery was also ok (it's been awhile, but I don't think they went too deep into him plotwise tho. I was just surprised they chose him in the sequel). If it's a villian group, I also quite liked the Four Fangs in FE7.

If we're talking about final big bads general tho, it's always some kind of beat the evil dragon and the evil sorcerer/king who summons it. I don't think it has ever been very deep.

  5. I'm freshly done with a Hard Classic run, and here's my thoughts:

    Best Unit - Alcryst
I did most of mid game with him as a Bow Knight with Axes + Luncina ring. I think it worked really well. The axes off set his low str, and the class also provided good coverage.
Later on I reclassed him back to his personal, and gave him Lyn. He's just bomb with Lyn and a Killer Bow. Luna procs with astra, and you can snipe things miles away off the map.

    Worst Unit - Chloe
She was really great up to mid game, but fell off pretty bad for me later on as Griffon Rider, the mixed magic/str didn't do her favours. I think the game is really generous when it games to staff users (late game I had Ivy, Pandreo, Hortensia and Mauvier  ). I would have liked her to carry the S rank Spear which sadly was too heavy. If I were to use her again I might keep her to exclusively a physical or magic class.

    Disappointing Unit - Diamant
He wasn't terrible, but not as amazing as the hype. I'm not sure if I'm using him correctly, I have him with Ike, but I don't think he can enemy phase as well as I like to, and for a first playthrough it took a while to get him Pair Up from Corrin. I mainly have him with axes as back up for chain attacks as he was out shone by Kagetsu with swords.

    Units who surprised me:
    Pandreo
    - He's really solid reclassed as a Sage. I had him with Celica, and Ivy with Ike refined Dire Thunder. I also at some points had him with Corrin and the Fire Dragon Vein was more useful that I thought, as it also reduced movement and can be used to stall groups of enemies at choke points.

Alfred - I tried him in both his personal class and as Paladin with Sigurd. His speed can be really dicey, but had quite nice str growths, he spend most of early playthrough mediocre, but everything changed when he got that Brave Lance.

Mauvier - So this dude makes for a really solid Martial Master with the Erika Ring, and is super tanky for both res and def. His speed isn't amazing, but Lunar Brace, that scroll with +5 speed, and Arm's brave effect was enough to make up for it. On Hard he can still quad some enemies. I was tempted to feed him all the speedwings and give him Speedtaker or +5 Speed from Lyn.

Seadall - Canter+ is not brainer, but was also really nice with Quality Time for a little bit of healing

Alear - More specifically with Roy. I know they are great with Corrin or Byleth for utility purposes. But for frontlines I had a good experience with Roy in their personal class. My Alear had quite low atk with good speed, and Roy gave a wooping +6 str which offset that, as well as Hold Out ++ and Advance. I interited Canter and Speedtaker. Admittedly I don't think their Engage attack is as good as with Corrin or Byleth, but past a certain point, I felt it didn't matter too much as another option was available if wanted to go on the offensive.

Happily no one on this playthrough was super terrible or unusable to the point of babying

  6. Part of me really wish there was a way to keep track of internal levels. I'm playing Hard/Classic just finished Ch 22, and have been switch class a lot for some characters, and keeping others in their personal classes. The visible displayed levels are wildly different. I sometimes have reclassed after one map or only a few level ups lol, and I'm really not keeping track of who I use more often, or distributing exp properly. It's probably not the most efficient way to play, but I wanted to get a feel for things.

So far I've really enjoyed Alcryst as a Bow Knight with Axes. He has good dex and Killer Axe makes for a good close range option. I also really like coverage with the Longbow and Luncina Ring. He basically keeps appearing out of nowhere all the time x'D. His personal class is also decent, I might eventually switch back because the outfit is nicer lol (and for Luna).

I'm not 100% sure with Chloe. I think she's amazing early/mid game as a Griffon Knight with Lances and staves, but fall off quite a bit later on with her mixed mag/str. I don't think she's that good at magic tanking later on either compared to Horsentia or Pandreo. I've reclassed her to Mage Knight for now, but have been thinking about dropping. (Having said all of that I'm also not sure if it's just because she's far behind everyone else cause she was one of my first promotes and I haven't second sealed her compared to some of the others. Her actual level might be lower than it looks.)

Alfred has been ok. I've jumped around Avenir, Paladin and currently on Wyvern Knight. His strength is good so it's ok with Brave Lance. I quite liked Paladin with Leif before, it gave him some more weapon options when engaged, but the class limited to only on weapon type was sad. Maybe I will try Wolf Knight after I get over the furry armour with tails and everything lol

Lastly, I am so happy to find out Mauvier is recruitable! He's late, but it's ok, I've saved some paralouges! Once I get through Ch 23 I'd like to try him out in as Martial Master (or Sage if I'm feeling daring. He seems to have good magic growths but is slow.)

  7. Decided to take all my Dimis for a spin.

Admittedly they got carried by B!Dimitri and F!Dimitri's Galeforce and Canto, my most built Dimis. Student Dimitri was relegated to reposition bot, and L!Dimi was there to AoE some damage on Byleth at the end. Might try to repeat this when Lady Byleth comes round again.

@GuiltyLove I siriusly like your Camus. I don't see fully invested Camus often, and he put some really good work there on that map. It's a real nice build you have on him.

  8. Thank you everyone :'D

Congrats! It's definitely an accomplishment to beat all the routes on Maddening.

I'm amazed how much longer your playtimes are than mine. Your first run is pretty similar to my longest but after that... what do you think added all the time for the later runs?

Interestingly all three things you called disappointments are things I was very happy/impressed by. RNG luck or playstyle difference? Could be either or a mix of both. One of the fun things about 3H is how many different yet effective ways there are to approach the game.

That is really interesting because I really really wanted Dorothea and Sylvain to work out. Maybe yeah, how did you build your Dorothea and Sylvain?

In my case Dorothea I took her down the Mage route. She ended up with only 19 speed, and kinda middling for both Mag and Str. I wonder if I should have passed through something like Assassin. For Sylvain, he was a complete tragedy T_T, by CF endgame as Dark Knight his str was still at like 28? I ended up reclassing back to Paladin for Lancefaire.

With Bow Knights I did really liked Leonie, and Ignatz in that class, and I think Cyril has potential in it too (I put him in WL, but his stat spread seems workable for Bow Knight).
It's just on that AM run, I tried putting Byleth in it and it was a bit of a disaster. So I just kinda ended up being more cautious when considering which unit I wanted to take into that class. Initially I wanted to try it for Felix and Ferdinand, but kept it to characters with higher Dex.

Once it's done, I find subsequent playthroughs easier cause you know what to expect (and there's the NG+ option)

I never tried a NG+ maddening run on any given route. Is it normally better to spend renown on supports early so you can just recruit other units whenever you want first? Or do you just buy up the max professor rank first so you can just increase which ever rank for Byleth that you want instead?

I usually use Renown to early to take the edge off White Clouds and help with recruiting. Max Prof rank I think 100% makes a lot of difference, thanks to the extra activity points. Other things I find nice are Authority ranks, and Class mastery skills when available. I quite like renown on NG+ because it kinda lets you customise to a certain extent how you want your run to be to like.

Were you abusing renown on the New Game+ files? I've played all the routes except Silver Snow on Maddening by now and they've become progressively easier because I'm such a renown abusing whore.

So it kinda depends for me, for Byleth absolutely. For Prof ranks, weapon ranks skills.. everything. Having hit Prof rank early definitely made things much easier, thanks to the extra activity points.  It was also really fun giving Male Byleth Darting Blow for instance, Female Byleth Quick Riposte, and trying hybrid builds.

Sadly for students, since I mainly used in house students they rarely had anything to interit 😞 . Ones that did I recruit for multiple routes I tried to build them differently, just to switch things up, so I couldn't use as much renown for them.

Think this took just under a year, I started AM last June, and played AM on NG and the rest on NG+.
Used male Byleth on VW, female Byleth on the others. I usually pick explore, and do battle on the final weekend of every month. The only exception was for SS where I did do a fair bit of grinding for Intermediate Classes/Masteries on Church units. I used DLC classes, but no online or use of Chalice.

I think the easiest route overall was VW, because you get a lot of archers early on, there's no worries about recruiting Lythesia or Lorenz and there wasn't much of a difficulty spike on the second half.
AM is probably still a little easier during White Clouds (I got through it while messing about), because of Annette's rallies and Dedue, but the second part can be a pain if unprepared.
CF has a harder first half, but I don't think the difficulty spikes as bad on the second half except the final few maps. The only real issue I found was how short it was, so there was less time to enjoy completed builds, and can be a bit tight if chasing S+ ranks for weapons.
Hardest boss for me was Rhea in SS. She has a huge range, lots of HP, and there's the need to beat the white beasts. Overall, even though you don't get a "Lord" character on that route, Seteth is pretty good.

I tried to use mostly in house characters on each run. The only ones I didn't give a fair chance to were:

the retrainers (Dedue, Hilda, Hubert) - I chose to adjunct to their lords for support bonuses
Hapi (sorry) - I like her but didn't get a chance at all T_T
Yuri - mostly adjunct to Byleth for bonuses
Constance - Dancer (kinda hilariously over qualified)
Raphael - Adjunct to Ignatz to make space for Balthus
Casper - Tried to use him, but eventually adjunct to Bernadetta. I think he's useable, but there's just better options.

    Fun surprises:

Dark Flier Byleth - Having magic was fun, probably not as good as Falcon Knight, but one of the better hybrid options for her
    Valkyrie Annette - She's such a bomb
Sniper Hanneman - Hilariously effective. Totally recommend.
War Master/Grappler Alois - Out of the box ready to go. Good weapon levels.
Falcon Knight Catherine - It took effort to get her there, but no regrets; she has amazing growths in strength

    Disappointments:

Mortal Savant Dorothea - I didn't realise how average all of her growths were.

Dark Knight Sylvain - I wanted to try a build where he could have access to Swift Strikes, Physic and Seraphim. It didn't work out as good as it sounded on paper. I also think he got quite strength screwed too  (even though I took him through mostly physical classes) which didn't help

Bow knights -  No Hunter Volley and the hit penalty at the furthest range make this less worthwhile unless on a character with Point Blank Volley like Leonie or Cyril (but then you still can't take full advantage of that crazy range). I think the only other character liked it on was Ignatz who has that +20 Hit Personal.

Do you really switch Ingird to using Swords over Lances as a Falcon Knight? She doesn't even gain any substantial Avoid from it until A+ Swords, never mind the drop in her already poor Strength.

Well if a case for lancebreaker to easily ruin her is to be made, then a case that she can easily switch out weapons to avoid it can also be made.
Personally no, because I don't find the situation where there's enough lancebreaker enemies for her carrying lances to become a problem on AM. I also find Ingrid's strength problem to be vastly overblown. Like yeah I agree it's not great, but it's not tragic. The Lancefaire from FK helps, you can get her Death Blow, and she can also get a second Lancefaire from lance skills.

You don't have to chose whether or not you want a Warmaster to bait or defeat an enemy. They can already hit 100 Avoid just passively, which is more than enough for most enemies. Alertsance on Brawlers is only really ever necessary if you want to see a displayed 0 Hit on the enemy.

Equipping Gautier over something like Leicester and Gonreil is the difference of 15 Crit. While that is admittedly a good amount, Crits still aren't going to be consistent without either some form of Wrath, so I don't think of it as a huge loss.

I mean it more in terms of on a turn, if I had to choose between positioning a Warmaster to bait something on one area or to punch out some other threat in a different area, rather than builds.

I don't think Wrath for crit is a must, plus it's for enemy phase. For player phase it's definitely possible for a crit orientated war master.

A War Master's innate Crit + 20, Killer Knuckles+ +30, Fraldarius Soldiers +20,  Brawl Crit +10, Crit Ring +5. That's +85 crit off the bat, without counting the unit. If we're putting that kit on a powerhouse like Felix who will usually punch 4 times. It's enough consistent on player phase, maybe a tad overkill. You're pretty much guaranteed for either his crest, a crit or both to go off at least once or twice during a round of player phase combat.

The appeal of Impreganable Wall is that allows any unit to act like a dodgetank and bait enemies without massive amounts of investment. That alone makes worth bringing to every battle. Even if you discount that, being able to make any unit effectively immune to gambits and have enemies ignore them in favor of your dodgetanks provides a great amount of flexibility you otherwise wouldn't have.

Adjuatant provide +10 Avoid at A Rank Support. That's what you're overlooking.

Ingird will actually not have much more avoid than Felix with this setup. An Average level 40 FK Ingird will have 39 Speed, which would result in 120 Avoid when wielding Luin. An Average level 40 War Master Felix would have 34 Speed, giving him 114 Avoid without needing to even wait. Keep also in mind that with Sauna it's entirely possible to slap on regular Alert Stance on Felix and actually get more avoid on him than Ingrid. And that's not even the discussing the benefits of Crit +20 and Quick Riposte.

I don't see how any potential flying dodgetank need "massive amounts of investment".
For C in Faith for War monk seems more out of way, they can't use any of the Faith Magic, and again Sauna for Alert Stance for B Flying when he's not going to fly.
Whereas on Ingrid, the most out of the way thing I'd get would be with C+ in Axes. With that I can comfortably get a Death Blow and a scum for a shift in Wyvern Rider as an advanced class.

With Adjuncts, I believe it's like having  permanent link support on them. So for example if you give Ingrid, Sylvain she'll reap the special link support benefits (+3mt, +10 hit and the +10 avo), the bonus not something special for grounded units. Sure making a flier adjunct can be annoying, but the requirements aren't' that awful if planned from the get go. For what it's worth, I've thrown Hubert on a Wyvern for Edelgard lol.

    8 hours ago, LoneRecon400 said:

+3 Avoid is realistically not going to matter by that point and wouldn't be worth the Skill Slot.

Swords are terrible for Ingrid considering not only would she lack a faire skill and would contribute even more to her Strength Issues, she'd also lose 30 Avoid to Paladins and Falcon Knights thanks to Sword Breaker. Gaining +9 Avoid while losing as much -13 attack is simply not worth it.

And that's why we check what weapon an enemy is holding, if they have a breaker skill equipped or not, and carry multiple weapons. Can't speak for everyone, but in most cases we're not going to throw her (or any other dodgetank) into a room like that, but bait out groups.

    Quote

Quick Riposte and Crit +20 by themselves wouldn't be enough to match 8 move and Flight, no. But when combined with the fact that Brawl Dodgetanks don't require a flying Battalion, are capable of dodging without waiting on Player Phase, aren't subject to weapon breakers, can use Guard Adjutants, and can have better avoid than flying units, that's enough to put them over flying dodgetanks yes.

I don't want to choose if I want my War Master to delete something or to bait something. For me it's just more convenient to have a character whose only role is to mainly to bait. For a character like Felix I'd rather focus on making him as good at deleting stuff, him being able to dodge stuff while in enemy range or attacking is a great bonus.
Also if I remember right, the only grounded battalions that give great Avo bonuses are Brigid Hunters, Gautier Knights and Aegir Astral Knights ones (all give +20 avo) while they're great, for a war master, I'd rather stack crit with something like Goneril Valkyries, Fraldarius Soldiers or King of Lions, which provide no bonuses to avo. In the case of AM, they're also great for sharing with Dimitri at low health.

Eh.. I think we're still gonnae have to agree to disagree there with movement. imho There's no point on having all of that good stuff on a unit if you can't get them to where you need them to be.

For Ashe I was considering a support gambit bot Paladin if I was going to use Ingrid as a Dancer. Because he is unimpressive otherwise. Plus while his speed isn't bad, his charm growth isn't the best. But if I have to, I'll waste stat boosters on him to get him at least 13 charm. I double checked the battles ahead of Azure Moon and like you all pointed out it is mage heavy so Ingrid as a Falcon Knight would be the girl for the job. I guess what I am figuring out is can Ingrid excel as something else aside from flier. In fairness to that, if it ain't broke, no need to fix it.

Ahh That makes sense, yeah I think for a support role Dancer would fit Ingrid really well. As other have said, she would also make for a really good Dancer.

Your team looks really good, regardless of who you pick for dancer. Yay for Axe Annette! I don't think it's worth it going down Peg Knight for Annette at all. She is slow. I had pretty good results taking her down the cavalry route with Valkyrie and Dark Knight. It'll give her access to Uncanny Blow, and battalions with higher magic and hit bonuses.

Windsweep is good on Dimitri, it does come in handy now and again. For Battalion Vantage/Wrath shenanigans Hit+20 is great, and having Curved Shot from Bows on Dimitri is also pretty nice.

imho if you want to bring his Authority up to A, Ashe as is a pretty good carrier for Retribution as a Sniper from Indech's battalion.  He'll likely not see enemy phase much and it patches him up a bit with Mt, Hit and Crit bonuses.

  13. I also recommend Ashe if you’re after one from the Blue Lions. Especially if it’s only for dancing. He gets Physic if that’s something. Ingrid shines late game when Ashe starts dropping off imho.

It's just that, I guess I convinced myself that having a dancer would be more beneficial than not because I know that you get the Blue Lions Dancer battalion by Azure Moon part 2. While you get the Opera Company battalion as well, you get it assuming you bring Dorothea or Manuela with you to Enbarr, it's the second to last battle in the game. At least they are nice enough to let you equip it by the finale. I was hoping to have a dancer regardless because I want to use some cool strategy involving two units using Dance of the Goddess. In other words, I want to at least refresh my dancer twice and help clear out a big group of enemies by turn 1 or turn 2. Particularly killing Myson which provides Hedgemon Edelgard a huge range boost to her attacks.

Just a heads up that the Blue Lions Dancers battalion has one use and gives very little bonuses, even less than the Opera battalion, I think. It kinda screws the unit that has it equipped. Imho on longer maps, or if you’re like me, precious about saving battalion uses for the ‘right moment’ then end up never using them, it can be a bit finicky. Pulling out a successful set up is super satisfying though!

  14. Don't have much to say about Leonie apart from that she's pretty awesome 8/10. Her personal is really good early game.
Point-Blank Volley is reliable, and she can use it whether as Bow or Falcon Knight (or both!). Her dex is high enough to get a lot out of Bow Knight, and she'll be fast af. Bows are just really good in general on Maddening. To top it off she has pretty decent def as well. I found her str a little lacking, and ended up keeping her in Bow Knight for Bowfaire over Falcon.

  15. Thoron, Physic and Silence is great. She offers some decent offensive options for turns where I don't need her to heal. I like to have her as a Dark Knight, packing the Healing Staff so she gets both the faire, and the +10 healing boost. I also like her Riding proficiency, as it's quite reliable to get her Move +1 in good time. It's a just pity with the neutral Reason. Soulblade is a little questionable, even though she has good res and decent Magic, it usually comes shy of a ohko for me with it. I could see it working better in a class with swordfaire, or some boosters

Some people say warp is never vital in Maddening mode, those people clearly have never played Felix's paralogue. A map that is impossible to beat any other way than a one turn clear because enemies target and kill Rodrigue on turn 1.

Imho it’s more about on if the player wants the Aegis shield. It’s ok to miss paralogues and compete the game. If doing it later, it’s possible with fliers and Stride to two turn it for all the rewards. It’s just so much easier with Warp.

Same with Lorenz’s paralogue. It’s doable by striding across the bridge or just normally, but like... Warp across the water is just too convenient xD.
