It's not the violence. I'll admit to that existence.

It's the assumption that all video games are ultraviolent, oversexed, grade-dropping, mindsinking pieces of crud.

A really good game is an artwork of sorts: visuals, story and music all blended. NO game has to be violent to succeed, and many good games have self-defense involved. Chess (war strategy), fencing, archery, martial arts- all of those activities derived from violence are socially acceptable. Most games do not promote nor do they cause violence. And frankly? A Tale of Two Cities has more horrific death than FE or TLoZ. Granted, there are some horrifically violent games out there, but they shouldn't represent the entire picture.

As for the bad images of women in games, they would not be there if society did not push girls and women away from gaming, thus limiting audiences to mostly male. There are also plenty of strong women in games (half the cast of FE for starters).

In terms of grades: video games do not cause bad grades. Case in point: myself. Plays games nearly every day, 3.966 GPA and a SAT score that I can't talk about without getting classmates mad at me. Not to mention my friends. Rather, I would argue that underacheivers, already frowned upon by society, look to games to vent and to find a sense of power. The games don't cause their bad grades.

America has made huge bounds in being more open-minded. I applaud the universities accepting video game majors (I love Carnegie Mellon).

I just wish our older generations could keep their minds open and their mouths shut when they don't know what they're blathering about.

Schools of higher learning are simply cashing in on a fad that is destructive to society.

I like how they call it a fad. fads die out. Video games ain't no fad.

In a 1993 study

Can anyone say, "Update!"

There is evidence that exposure to violent video games increases aggression.

They always say this, but I've never seen it. Most people I know who play games, (including me) are very calm people.

In addition, the content of video games may influence children's atititudes toward gender roles. In Nintendo games, women are often depicted as victims. The covers of Nintendo games show males striking a dominant pose. Many games are based upon a scenario in which a woman is kidnapped or has to be rescued

Because no T.v. shows, books, or other stories do this, ever! /sarcasm.

And it is spelled "attitudes."

That's not entirely true. I got into porn on my own accord[/kidding]

I can say that the game's I've played have inspired me to write. That and TV.

Thanks for spoiling it for me ._.

Actually its more like 1/3. But u make a good point.

I'd get turned on if I met a girl who played games in my school...

._.

*inferiority complex sets in*

I had a good 3.4 average till i got really depressed mid way through the year. i dropped a fucking letter grade. games weren't the cause... albeit they didn't help. I used to think of games as an escape from my loneliness. I know better now. everyone cracks at some point Kiryn... even you will.

Older people complain to try and fix things because they don't have the power to do anymore. I've told my conservative grandfather many times that what we do to this country will be on us, and that you have no say. You're not even gonna live to see what the future brings.

Like I said, video games are a way of life. If they complain about our way of life, they might as well be considered racist.

Also, I haven't seen anyone hurt anyone else because of a video game. Although, admittedly, it would be awesome to watch someone do an Aether in real life...

Is that guy in the picture the guy who wrote the article?

Lol, he looks like he's stuck in the 70's.

There's done you can really do about it, except hope people are intelligent enough to know when to spot crackpot nonsense. As long as ignorant people populate the Earth, there will always be another Jack Thompson ready to martyr video games for their extremely sexual themes and hyper violence. *Sigh.* Why is it "cool" to hate video games?

Here are absolute truths:

-Every generation is the same. Technology is different.

-The old pplz will always try to oppose new things that the younger generation loves.

-Eventually we'll be in their shoes, since its a cycle

-Jack Thompson worships Roy Cohn.
