Junk
which is better for newcomers who have only played persona 3 and 4 as well as dds, cannot afford smt 4 so do not suggest that,
MRDRHAWK
Nocturne is great. Go that route.
Soledai
Depends on your preferences, do you prefer first person, Strange Journey Do you like third person, Nocturne then... Since you have DDS experience in your belt, you can't go wrong with either
Dark Sage
nocturne uses the same combat and graphics engine as dds, so it's a natural jumping on point. strange journey apparently has more in common with the older smts though
Esau of Isaac
Strange Journey is so good, man. It starts off slow but it picks up by the second or third dungeon. Lots of fun, I recommend that one!
Ein
Get both. Since you played Digital Devil Saga you should be used to getting wrecked by random encounters and bosses if you don't know what they use or are weak to like in Nocturne. I still think Strange Journey is one of the more brutal SMT games I've ever played but it is also the most satisfying to play through.
