As long as you don't try to invade Russia, history says you should be okay.

Well, Genghis Khan did just fine. As did the Germans in WWI. We always seem to forget that Hitler had good reason to believe he could succeed. Oh, and this thread reminds me of a joke. Why did the Ottoman Empire prepare to defend Bosnia? Because Austria was Hungary for Turkey.

Well...alright touche. Genghis Khan did fairly well crush that area, but that would be like pitting a world superpower against a third world country. Genghis had a huge advantage. And my knowledge of the German invasion in WWI isn't as good as it could be. Wasn't it more of a counterattack than a total invasion? Russia never fully lost the war anyway, although they did sign a treaty of surrender.

It was a counter offensive, but so what? That still did an excellent job of invading Russia. They reached the borders of modern day Russia itself, and would probably have taken Petrograd too, if they didn't send Lenin. They were able to win by exploiting internal divisions within the country, which the Nazis SHOULD have done, but didn't due to their insane views of race. Also, the Kievan Rus was arguably more powerful economically than the Mongols, but I'll agree that they had them totally outmatched militarily.

[spoiler=Chapter XII - The Decline of the Tsar (Jun. 18, 1832 - Aug. 2, 1833)]

13-1.png

Ever the faithful ally.

13-2.png

So this is the current situation of the war at the moment I joined. Right now it’s more or less equal, with each side having occupying one province from the other. On the other hand, Russia has more troops, including a 31K stack near my border. My plan is to establish a defensive line.

13-3.png

Well, what do you know, this comes at none better time. Again, because of Great Power thing, I don’t really gain the Add to Sphere CB. The Cut Down to Size, though, we do get it. CDtS means that if we win, we’d force Russia to pay us war reparations, their military is limited for a set amount of years, and other thing I believe. However, a side that has Status Quo as war goal can’t have any other. So yeah, I can’t use the CDtS CB. Even if I could, CDtS has as requirement to occupy at least over 75% of the country.

*Looks at Russia*

Yeah, not happening.

In the meantime, more factory construction in Mexico:

· Oaxaca (Grain): Bakery (Grain).

· Zacatecas (Grain, Horses, and Fruit): Stables (Iron, Fruit, and Grain), Bakery, Fruit Cannery (Fruit), Sugar Refinery (Fruit), Winery (Glass and Fruit), and Rum Distillery (Glass and Sugar).

· Chiapas (Cattle and Coffee): Canned Food Factory (Cattle) and Shoe Factory (Bronze and Cattle).

· Durango (Dye, Cattle, Copper, and Precious Metal): Bronze Factory (Copper and Lead), Early Small Arms Factory (Bronze), Bronze Artillery Factory (Gunpowder and Bronze), Canned Food Factory, and Shoe Factory.

· Jalisco (Fish, Timber, and Iron): Paper Mill (Timber), Printing Press (Paper), Cigarette Factory (Paper, Tobacco), Steel Factory (Coal and Iron), Regular Clothes Factory (Fabric and Dye), Luxury Clothes Factory (Regular Clothes and Silk), and Fish Cannery (Fish). Level 1 Railroads in Colima and Guadalajara.

· México (Tobacco, Grain, Spices, Dye, and Iron): Cigarettes Factory, Bakery, Steel Factory, Regular Clothes Factory, and Luxury Clothes Factory. Level 1 Railroads in Mexico City, Veracruz, and Minatitlán.

June 26 – The Prussian 4th Army enters and begins occupying Telshi.

July 1 – The Prussian 3rd Fleet engages the Russian 6th Fleet in the Gulf of Riga.

I could send my navy over there, but I’m not worried. The Prussians can handle that on their own.

July 2 – The Prussian 2nd Fleet reinforces the Prussian 3rd Fleet in the Gulf of Riga.

July 6 – The Russian organization falls apart and stage a retreat from Suwalki.

July 6 The Prussian 4th and 5th Fleets reinforce the Prussian fleet in the Gulf of Riga.

This will be so one-sided.

July 17 – Phuclun3 reinforces the Poles and ENS at Grodno.

Definitely.

13-4.png

July 18 – The Russian 23rd Army gets wiped out in Grodno as the Poles begin to occupy it.

Wait, I thought that… huh. The game must’ve reassigned this guy and removed ENS from command of the regiment. I’ll put him back... when I can. Sorry ENS, seems you’ll sit this one out.

July 18 – The Russian 13th Army enters and begins occupying Suwalki.

13-5.png

And the Burmese lost. They hold on for so long, but the British tide couldn’t be stopped.

July 24 – The Regiment von Böhmen engages the Russian 13th Army in Suwalki.

The Russian’s organization is quite low. I don’t think I’ll kill many before they retreat.

July 25 – Archibald Medes engages the Russian 12th Army in Kovel.

These guys, on the other hand, may lose a lot more.

July 26 – The 11th Army reinforces Archie in Kovel.

Lot more.

July 29 – Phuclun3 enters and begins liberating Mariampol.

Figures.

13-7.png

August 5 – The Russian organization falls apart and stage a retreat from Kovel which Archie begins to occupy.

Well, they did died more here and there. Even if I lost much more soldiers, but that’s organization, enabling victories like such.

August 7 – The Prussian 6th Army engages the Russian 20th and 4th Armies in Memel.

August 10 – The Prussian 4th Army enters and begins occupying Shavli.

August 14 – The 11th Army enters and begins occupying Rovno.

August 18 – The Regiment von Böhmen reinforces the Prussians in Memel.

They were losing the battle, better help them out.

August 23 – The Prussian 1st Army enters Mariampol to help with the occupation.

A little late since it’s almost over, but eh.

13-8.png

August 24 – The Russian organization falls apart and stages a retreat from Memel.

August 24 – The German regiment finished liberating Mariampol.

August 25 – The Armia Polska intercept the Russian 12th Army in Brest-Litovsk.

August 26 – Blah2127 finished occupying Kamenets.

September 1 – The Regiment von Böhmen enters and begins occupying Libau.

13-9.png

September 2 – The Russian 20th Army gets wiped out as it entered Libau.

Yes, I actually overtook them in reaching the place first. It can happen.

September 4 – The Russian 4th Army reaches Libau as it was chased by the Prussian 5th and 6th Armies and clash, including the already present Regiment Von Böhmen.

These guys are in for another world of hurt

September 5 – The Russian organization falls apart and stages a retreat from Brest-Litovsk which begins to get occupied.

September 11 – Phuclun3 engages the Russian 11th, 13th, and 23rd Armies in Volkovysk.

September 19 – The Prussian 1st Army enters and begins occupying Goldingen.

September 20 – The Prussian 7th Army enters and begins occupying Ponevezh.

September 21 – The Russian 4th Army enters and is greeted by the Prussian 1st Army in Goldingen.

They can’t catch a break, huh. Also, my railroads are finally finishing being built, nice.

13-11.png

September 22 – The Russian organization falls apart and stage a retreat from Volkovysk, which begins to get occupied.

Also, got Crop Rotation for Dalmatia.

September 24 – The Prussian 4th Army finished occupying Shavli.

13-12.png

September 27 – The 11th Army wipes out a Russian rally in Rovno.

13-13.png

Another modifier like Paternalism. Again, can’t do anything with it yet, but it’s there now for when I can.

October 2 – The Prussian 4th Army enters and begins occupying Mitau.

October 2 – The Russian 4th Army gets wiped out in Goldingen.

And they finally met their end.

October 3 – The German regiment finished occupying Libau.

Well, I think I need to speed things up. I’ll move the regiment straight for the capital of St. Petersburg.

October 5 – Austria sends a peace offer enforcing the Status Quo.

Or they could already be willing to surrender. That works too.

13-14.png

October 6 – The Russian Empire accepts the terms of surrender.

And that was it. We beat the Tsar’s armies and secured Polish independence for now and from the Tsar. Time for the good old backstab.

13-15.png

Got an Intensive Farming notification for South Tirol, which I deny.

13-16.png

Oh for the love of… not this sort of thing again! And unlike the Netherlands, France can be a formidable opponent. Except, well, it can’t move on land towards me, since Sardinia-Piedmont is in the way. Prussia could be able to go against France… perhaps with a regiment or two of mine to help. Hmm…

13-17.png

1833 Upper House. Also, Russia’s score has dropped from the top 8. It’s on the way to be replaced by Bavaria as a Great Power. Wow, that would be 3 German countries as GP’s now. That’s just proof of superior master race. Disclaimer: No association whatsoever with the National-Socialist Party which doesn’t even exist yet at this point of the 19th century.

13-18.png

Ah, the dreaded Potato Blights. Both options are more of the less the same. The difference is that bottom option doesn’t have the flat prestige loss and consciousness rise, but lasts a full year instead of half. I’m going for top option. The flat increases are just that, but the modifiers lasting longer I think make a bigger impact long-term.

13-19.png

Soon, another country who will be on our sphere of influence.

Now, time to switch country for foreign investment: Spain.

· Catalonia (Grain, Fruit, and Cattle): Level 1 Railroad in Tarragona.

May not look like much, but it’s because of something that happened down the road.

13-20.png

Ah, another event related to monarchies the mod added. They’re generic as an umbrella cover to all applying countries, but it also ends up making it silly or odd for anyone versed on the rulers of the time. Like, I’m pretty sure the event shouldn’t come up for Austria now, but that’s the RNG for you. And as much as I want to pull a Captain Picard, for this one I chose local nobility instead. Reason is that the selected country for the foreign option is Modena. The difference in this case is simply a relations increase with them. However, I have no need for that. Not to mention Modena will eventually disappear when Italy forms. So yeah.

In other news, got Shaft Mining for Bohemia. Good, as it’s full of Coal and Iron regions.

13-21.png

Technology researched, and can now upgrade my forts. This is why I put factory building on hold. Next research in line is to upgrade my ports.

13-22.png

Well, why not. Let’s give full support. Middle option gives only the relations and influence increase, and by 20 instead of 50. Refusing is a loss of 3 prestige.

13-23.png

Well, might as well.

13-24.png

This year is certainly a good one to be Viennese.

13-25.png

We still don’t have the means to hire Engineers, so for now we only get the Dig-In Cap increase.

Well, I’d say this is a good spot to stop. Soon enough we’ll see if we can take land from the Poles, even if they have the French backing them.

Hehehehe, well, technically it wasn't invading Russia, just simply beating them around a bit so they can give up invading Congress Poland. And the latter allying with France is simply a coincidence. Could've been the Netherlands, or Sardinia-Piedmont... or perhaps the most detrimental: Prussia. But that didn't happen, thankfully.

Well, I guess I am the Proto-Führer now, just without the racial superiority stuff. lol

There is a reason I'm doing all that. It's not quite needed, but it's one of those gameplay things I do for the extra challenge. And that is something I call: "Dominance over Accepted Cultures". It essentially boils down to: If I have an accepted culture, I annex all the lands that have country cores of countries that have that culture as primary.

Of course, Austria doesn't have accepted cultures yet. It's an "ahead-of-time" thing, since by the time I finally form the Danube Federation, there may be not enough time left for future conquests, or easy opportunities to do so. The only exception here will be South German (Austria's primary culture) lands, because of Prussia and its "Form Germany" tendencies.

Oh yeah, if Prussia allied with Poland, you'd have to... gasp... actually honor an alliance?! The horror!

Just a quick question, since I have very little experience with vicky 2, is the prussian army as overpoweredly strong as in eu4?

Don't know how they are in EU4, but here they can become quite ridiculously strong once they become Germany. They can take a French-Russian pincer attack and defeat both countries.

In EU4, the prussian army gets some sick bonuses to a whole bunch of stats due to their national ideas. Pound for pound, prussian regiments are some of the strongest in the world at any given time and given that their bonuses apply to their entire army instead of one unit type, Prussian armies are essentially the strongest in the game.

Well, to be fair, the Prussians were the best trained army in Europe IRL, at least until Napoleon came along.

Title is a reference. If you get it, you’ll…. Uh… get a “congratulations”? A cookie? Beats me…

[spoiler=Chapter XIII - Austria's Polish Adventure (Aug. 3, 1833 - Oct. 4, 1834)]

Sure, we’re in an expansionist craze, but it’s bound to end someday. Someday. Okay okay… but I’m still in charge here, it will end when I say so!

CB is done, so it’s just a matter of moving my forces to the Polish border first. Also, looks like Russia was able to climb back to 8th place before losing Great Power status. Guess we won’t have Bavaria GP… yet, perhaps.

Now, for this war, I’ll be using a different approach. And that is: not call my allies. France has formidable armies… but they can’t use them if they don’t have the means to reach me. I’ll take advantage that military access mechanics are restricted in the mod compared to vanilla game, so by not involving my allies in the war, even if I don’t have Prussia participating, I will be fine since France can’t send armies directly.

What they can do, however, is send them in transport ships. This is why I’ll send my ships to intercept them. Hopefully they won’t have many actual war ships.

So without further note… let’s do this!

In the meantime, proper investment to Spain this time now that fort construction is almost done:

· Catalonia (Grain, Fruit, and Cattle): Stables (Iron, Fruit, and Grain), Canned Food Factory (Cattle), Shoe Factory (Bronze and Cattle), Fruit Cannery (Fruit), Sugar Refinery (Fruit), Winery (Glass and Fruit), and Rum Distillery (Glass and Sugar).

· Vasconia-Aragón (Iron, Wool, Fruit, and Grain): Steel Factory (Coal and Iron), Wool Mill (Wool) (Produces Fabric), Regular Clothes Factory (Fabric and Dye), Luxury Clothes Factory (Regular Clothes and Silk), Clipper Shipyard (Fabric and Lumber), Stables, Fruit Cannery, and Sugar Refinery. Level 1 Railroad in Zaragoza and Teruel.

· Galicia-Asturias (Coal and Fish): Cement Factory (Coal), Explosives Factory (Gunpowder), Ammunition Factory (Gunpowder and Lead), Bronze Artillery Factory (Gunpowder and Bronze), Steel Factory (Iron and Coal), Glass Factory (Coal and Lead), and Fish Cannery (Fish). Level 1 Railroad in La Coruña.

· Castilla-León (Copper, Lead, Iron, Grain, Cattle, and Timber): Lumber Mill (Timber), Furniture Factory (Lumber and Bronze), Luxury Furniture Factory (Furniture and Tropical Wood), Paper Mill (Timber), Printing Press (Paper), Bronze Factory (Copper and Lead), and Glass Factory. Level 1 Railroad in León, Valladolid, Burgos, Salamanca, Ávila, and Soria.

· Castilla la Nueva (Iron, Lead, Grain, Fruit, and Cattle): Bronze Factory, Early Small Arms Factory (Bronze), Bronze Artillery Factory, Stables, Shoe Factory, Winery, Sugar Refinery. Level 1 Railroad in Madrid, Toledo, and Ciudad Real.

November 24 – Austria declares war with Congress Poland over Central Poland.

14-1.png

Let’s see how well this goes.

November 28 – Phuclun3 enters and begins occupying Kielce.

December 3 – The 11th Army enters and begins occupying Lublin.

December 13 – The Armia Polska enters and begins occupying Rzeszow.

December 27 – Phuclun3 finished occupying Kielce.

14-2.png

1834 Upper House.

January 2 – Phuclun3 enters and begins occupying Lodz.

January 2 – Blah2127 engages the Armia Polska in Rzeszow.

14-3.png

Good, more militancy drop.

January 5 – The 11th Army finished occupying Lublin.

January 5 – ENS reinforces Blah2127 in Rzeszow.

January 8 – The Polish 1st Army enters and begins liberating Kielce.

14-4.png

January 13 – The Polish organization falls apart and stages a retreat from Rzeszow.

January 17 – The 11th Army enters and begins occupying Siedlce.

January 20 – ENS enters and begins occupying Radom.

January 21 – Blah2127 engages the Polish 1st Army in Kielce.

January 21 – The Armia Polska enters Radom only to be greeted by ENS.

Yeah, another “We can move faster than them” case.

14-5.png

January 23 – The Polish 1st Army gets wiped out in Kielce.

14-6.png

January 24 – Blaze the Great sinks a French transport ship in the Gulf of Valencia.

14-7.png

January 26 – Blaze the Great sinks another French transport ship in the Gulf of Valencia.

Seems the French aren’t quite versed in naval tactics.

14-8.png

February 1 – The Polish organization falls apart and stages a retreat from Radom, which begins to get occupied.

February 4 – Blah2127 enters and begins occupying Skierniewice.

February 9 – Phuclun3 finished occupying Lodz.

February 16 – Phuclun3 Enters and begins occupying Kalisz.

February 22 – The 1st Fleet engages the French 1st Fleet in the Ligurian Sea.

February 24 – Blaze the Great reinforces the 1st Fleet in the Ligurian Sea.

February 26 – The 11th Army finished occupying Siedlce.

And that’s war goal 100% done. Since I need 50 war score, which is really higher due to how it works, I think at this point I’ll have to wait, otherwise I don’t see how I can get there earlier. Maybe once I’m done occupying the country I’ll move them over to France. They may not cross neutral land, but I can since I have military access.

March 8 – The 11th Army enters and begins occupying Warsaw.

March 11 – ENS finished occupying Radom.

March 14 – Phuclun3 finished occupying Kalisz.

March 25 – Phuclun3 enters and begins occupying Plock.

March 26 – ENS engages the Armia Polska in Lomza.

March 27 – Blah2127 finished occupying Skierniewice.

14-9.png

Nice, more organization.

14-10.png

April 3 – The French fleet stages a retreat from the Ligurian Sea.

A good thing about sinking transport ships is that if they were carrying soldiers, they die too. Too bad I could only sink one ship.

14-11.png

April 6 – The Polish organization falls apart and stages a retreat from Lomza, which begins to get occupied.

April 14 – The 11th Army finished occupying Warsaw.

Capital is down.

14-12.png

Ah, an event. The options give the same effects, it just changes the position of Rich and Poor Strata. Since Poor Strata are majority, I chose top option.

April 26 – Blah2127 enters and begins occupying Suwalki.

14-13.png

Top options is a flat 2 consciousness drop in all the country. Since average consciousness isn’t even 0.1, I’ll take the Prestige gain.

May 1 – Phuclun3 finished occupying Plock.

May 9 – The 11th Army engages the Armia Polska in Mariampol.

14-14.png

May 21 – The Polish organization falls apart in Mariampol, which begins to get occupied.

They had no room to retreat, so it seems it disbanded.

May 28 – Blaze the Great engages the French 1st Fleet in Cape Bon.

May 31 – The 1st Fleet reinforces Blade the Great in Cape Bon.

June 5 – ENS finished occupying Lomza.

June 9 – Blah2127 finished occupying Suwalki.

The country is almost all under control now, time to move the regiments near France.

14-15.png

July 1 – The French fleet stages a retreat from Cape Bon.

A better performance.

14-16.png

The UK is again the Workshop of the World. Now I’m sure of it, it’s whoever has 1st place in Industrial Score. Well, I’m about to close that gap and overtake them.

July 20 – The 11th Army finished occupying Mariampol.

Whole country occupied. Time to move these guys too.

14-17.png

Technology researched, time to upgrade ports. Now, next technology is mainly to advance on the tree so I can get to the technologies that can unlock decisions.

August 25 – The 1st Fleet intercepts the French 5th Fleet in the Gulf of Lion.

August 26 – Glaze the Great reinforces the 1st Fleet in the Gulf of Lion.

August 31 – Phuclun3, Blah2127, and ENS enter and begin occupying Strasbourg.

Time to invade France proper. Hopefully they can withstand the incoming French armies.

14-18.png

September 4 – The French fleet is sunk in the Gulf of Lion.

September 19 – Phuclun3, Blah2127, and ENS finished occupying Strasbourg.

September 23 – The 1st Fleet intercepts the French 1st Fleet in the Western Mediterranean.

September 23 – Phuclun3, Blah2127, and ENS engage the French 2nd Army in Metz.

September 25 – Blaze the Great reinforces the 1st Fleet in the Western Mediterranean.

14-19.png

Aw bummer. This event is to imitate a death by old age or sickness, I think.

14-20.png

And new invention. Speed is always good.

14-21.png

October 4 – The French organization falls apart and stages a retreat from Metz, which begins to get occupied.

Team effort!

Well, time to end the update here. And that’s because right in the corner something quite interesting showed up. What is it? Ah, you’ll have to wait for next time.

Heh, I can only imagine it. In a realistic review of the playthrough, I doubt the formation of the Danube Federation would fully vindicate Austria's current actions, but in theory it would become a subject of big debate, specially on the "Did the end could fully justify the means?" topic.

Well, this is pretty obviously total realpolitik. If this was reality, this would cost Austria a lot of prestige. Of course, the AI is pretty bad at simulating human reactions to conflicts.

Well, later on in game you can

-Support the Confederate States of America (you probably know the issue with that)

-As an absolute monarchy or a Fascist/Communist dictatorship, brutally suppress dissent with your secret police

-If a German state, you can be the Nazis

-You can brutally colonize all of Africa, which will almost certainly lead to the deaths of millions of people mad at least one genocide

-Outright commit cultural genocide by assimilating un accepted cultures into accepted cultures

So yeah, this isn't the worst you can do in this game by a long shot.

Paradox games: where mercy and honor go to die in Leviathan's feeding trough

Do you get a penalty for attacking allies in Victoria 2, or is it even possible? Reminded that even in ck2 there's a prestige loss penalty, but that's rarely more than a slap on the wrist. Victoria 2 being more razor-focused on politics seeks like it might handle things a little differently

Awesome. So slavery, facism, totalitarianism, Nazism, assimilation, genocide, or ethnic cleansing? Sounds like a great game.

Yeah, can you imagine if Jack Thompson found out about it. Oh, and if you think Victoria II is bad, wait until you see CKII.
