Basically, which of these menacing big baddie dark mages of the Kaga-era Fire Emblem would win in a fight? Both of them serve the evil dragon (though I heard Gharnef was planning to betray Medeus) and both are very powerful mages. Which of them would win this fight?

Gharnef

or

Manfroy

If status staffs can ignore Imhullu then Sleep could shut him down... but given that Silence doesn't work it's unlikely.

Although it may end in a draw if Gharnef's low magic can't overcome Manfroy's resistance stat.

Some random NPC said it best: "You can't win against Gharnef!"

Anyway, thanks to Imhullu's effect, Manfroy won't be able to deal damage to Gharnef. In theory, Manfroy could win with the Starlight tome... but assuming Starlight is treated as Light magic, then it's the one magic type that Manfroy can't wield. And his canonical tomes (Fenrir and Jormungandr) are far too pedestrian to have any effect.

It's been pointed out that Gharnef doesn't have enough magical power to actually damage Manfroy. So, if stats translate one-to-one, then the battle becomes an interminable draw. However, assuming some measure of "normalizing" occurs, between unit and/or weapon stats, then we could expect Gharnef's attack power to go up (and Manfroy's resistance to fall). Under these conditions, Gharnef would actually be dealing damage, albeit probably not a lot.

I think you're mistaken. This was a thread about beings of pure evil, who sow misery wherever they go, and can only be vanquished by the forces of good.

If normalizing occurs, we can use Gharnef''s stats in New Mystery. He has 30 magic.  His tome has 14 mt, and has an A rank in tomes. In total, he has 46 attack. Manfroy has 27 resistance and 80 hp. Gharnef would need to hit Manfroy 5 times to kill him. In holy war, Gharnef has 44 attack, which still takes 5 hits to kill Manfroy.

Manfroy has has 29 magic, and his tome has 12 mt. 41 attack in total. Gharnef has 25 resistance and 60 hp. Manfroy kills Gharnef in 4 hits. Manfroy has a  32% chance of a follow up attack because of his continue skill. In New Mystery, Manfroy has 43 attack, but this doesn't make a difference.

In Holy war,  Gharnef kills Manfroy in 3 rounds of combat due to his ability to double. Another point for Gharnef is that he has vantage, and so always attacks first.  Manfroy gets slowed down by weapon weight. But, Manfroy has a chance of follow up attack due to continue and has a slightly higher chance of getting a critical hit on Gharnef. I could calculate who has the higher probability of winning, but I'm too busy. Math majors and other science majors could calculate this. And you have to consider hit rates.

In New Mystery, Manfroy indisputably wins. Gharnef does not double him in New Mystery.  New Mystery has very high hit rates, so missing should rarely be an issue.

Manfroy does 0 damage per hit, because Gharnef has functionally infinite resistance against any tome that isn't Starlight.

Manfroy would win. Starlight is currently the only known method of defeating Gharnef, but Manfroy is intelligent enough to develop another spell that could defeat Gharnef.

This is blatantly handwavey. It's possible there's another way of damaging Gharnef, but we don't know it. Also, we're talking about the same Manfroy who was "intelligent enough" to keep Julia, the greatest threat to Loptyr's resurrection and dominance, alive when he could've killed her.

Okay, then Gharnef is intelligent enough to develop a defense for whatever spell Manfroy cooks up. That imaginary scenario goes both ways.
