  1. This is quite the opposite! You see, Nintendo of America actually made a great deal of changes to the names of characters, places, and terminology of the original and took some liberties with the cutscene texts. Their version leans a bit more on the "rewrite" side than translation, while my translation aims to to be faithful to the original Japanese script. However, I tried to use the official localized name when it was accurate, or tweak it slightly to bring it closer to the original. Example: Japan        Official Localization Retranslation 2021 グルニア Gurunia Grust Grunia キルソード Killsword Killing Edge Kill Sword リフ Riff      Wrys Wryf This version's title screen imitates the Japanese version, which doesn't display the subtitle anywhere. Instead, the light blue lettering that appears is "FIRE EMBLEM" written in English the way the Japanese lettering spells "ファイアーエムブレム". The screenshots in the initial post should show what that looks like.
  2. Yup, the Monado can be used as a weapon, as people in the continent of Akaneia are not Homs. Skull Kid is a skull kid who just so happens to be the antagonist of a game. This would not come into play, as "turns" don't exist in real life. If you want another dancer, you will have to recruit one who already exists. Also, Mog's dances are attacks, not the same as the refresh dance from Fire Emblem which should only "encourage" users when applied realistically. Other people can definitely use the Monado, as seen with Dunban. However, its ability to damage the Black Knight would most likely be limited. Since it's only his armor that's enchanted, the laser part of the Monado might be able to do some damage. Even if Gharnef somehow miraculously survived, which seems very unlikely, you would have to do something even more miraculous to convince him to do your bidding. Also, you have three days. Nevertheless, I am going to say that Gharnef is dead. To all: You may continue to ask for more information and even debate the conditions, but the moon is on its way. Once you have your plan, you should provide your entire plan of action as to how you either stop the moon's crashing ( it's presumed incapacitating Majora / the Majora's Mask will result in the moon going back to normal ), saving the people you choose, or perhaps simply saving yourself.
  3. Skull Kid is using the Majora's Mask The Majora's Mask is using Skull Kid to summon the moon to crash in Akaneia in 3 days. He's holed himself up in the castle at Pales, Akaneia. Also, he's teamed up with Gnasty Gnorc and the Black Knight from Path of Radiance. Gnasty Gnorc has an army of Gnorcs, quantity unknown, and the Black Knight has somehow coerced most of the Akaneian army to follow him and protect Skull Kid. This takes place after the events of Monshou no Nazo, and you can live in any country you want as any Akaneian class you want (including dragons and ballistae), but you cannot be any existing character. You are given Yoshi, the Monado, Kazooie, and three Moogles (one of which being Mog, the dancing Moogle from FFVI). All portals are closed - nothing else can be brought in from outside universes. Everything follows lore rules, not gameplay rules. What do you do?

One small advantage of using an internet name over a real name is that if you wind up creating something that you get embarressed about, you can always jump ship, come up with a new name, cut your loses, and just move on. Another big advantage of using an internet name is, if you pick some made-up or really obscure word(s) for your name, you can dominate the internet search results. Also gives you a leg up if you ever decide to use your name for something like a website URL, since it most likely won't be heavily contested. You can get along for quite a long time using just a penname... 'course, when it comes to commercial ventures, you'll have to use your real name on the legal documents. If you're worried about people stealing your artwork, don't be. There's plenty of creative ways you can watermark your creations so there'll be some tie to you. If you're just drawing copyrighted characters or using existing IP stuff (like say, a Fire Emblem fanfic), it shouldn't matter anyway since nobody can claim it for profit.
  5. As long as this is really a new topic and I'm not just confused... Everyone's probably played it already, but The Last Promise ( https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/962/ )is amazing. Way better than anything Intelligent System's produced in the last 15 years. The story is just as serious and silly as it needs to be, it's well-balanced, and the references are fun. The "homemade" voice-acting is the icing on the cake. Also, there's my complete FE1 hack that's still pretty obscure, Time For Tom ( https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6827/ ) about time-travelling and characters from different FE games interacting. Also, it's the only full hack for FE1 on the NES.

  8. On it! According to pegasusknight.com, Nehring (ネーリング)'s death quote is "Hurray for the emperor (皇帝)... *Gah*" And in Shin Monshou no Nazo, his death quote is: "Hurray for the emperor (皇帝)... *Gah*" The only notable difference here is that "banzai" (hurray) is now in Kanji.
  9. I've never played Gaiden past the village before the first map. My first FE game was Shadow Dragon, I played Monshou Book 1 many times over, spent about 3 months reverse-engineering FE1 with no documentation and limited ASM skills, all the while translating the game, developed an extractor/compiler to edit the FE1 data, built a FE1 map editor, spent 2 years on and off adding various mods, totalling three sets of dictionaries, added brand new features, fixed softlocks, created an entire original game in the same engine using the editor, built a randomizer, optimzed the editor, created a GUI with built-in unit editor, and you ask me about Gaiden...? 😛 But seriously, maybe! I did tinker around with Gaiden, and internally it's pretty similar to FE1. I was able to expand the unit status boxes and fix some of the issues that occured in FE1 the same way. If I took the time, I think I could at least translate Gaiden with unabridged text. Editor? Proably not. Of course, if some kind soul were to document every location of text in Gaiden and write up a guide to all the control codes and formatting for everything, maybe a decent Gaiden translation could come sooner than you think...
  10. (I also posted on FEUniverse, since I'm lazy, I'll just basically repaste what I posted there.) Hi! I’m Polinym, the king of FE1. Have you ever wanted to make your own FE1? No? Well, if you ever want to, now you can! Here's a demo of the kind of things you can do with Basilisk: This is the Basilisk editor I created to aid in my FE1-modding endeavors, and recently I’ve decided to lend it out to all the 7 other people out in the world that care about FE1. This editor has nothing to do with FEGBA builder, instead it uses a Project system. You start with a Project folder with Text Files that contain all of the game’s data, either in a human-readable format or in a simple list of bytes. You make all your edits in your project, then Basalisk compiles it into a ROM! Get here: Basalisk’s Github Repo (Release Only) I’ve got some more makeshift editors that you can use with this, like a Map Editor I made in GameMaker, but I’ll add those later. Also, I’ll eventually get around to writing up some kind of guide or wiki on how everything all works, but in the meantime, you’ll just have to figure things out. Virtually everything important is written in plain English. Just try to preserve as much of the formatting as possible. If things are formatting incorrectly, Basalisk will likely throw an error. Note: This is only compatible with the modded ROM, the patch for which I’ve included with the editor, and that patch must be applied to an ordinary Japanese ROM. The reason for this is that I’ve added a whole bunch of mods over the years to make adding new content to FE1 not a horrendous nightmare. (Heh heh, Nightmare…) I’m kind of a n000b when it comes to software licensing, so here are my Terms of Service: By using Basilisk, you agree to the following: I won’t claim this software as my own, nor will I try to modify it or give it away without crediting Polinym for it. I am aware of what Hexadecimal values are, and feel comfortable using them and decimal numbers interchangeably. I understand statements like, “Jake’s index number is 0x2f”. I understand that somewhere, at some point, I will make a mistake that throws an error in Basilisk, and I will politely ask for help from Polinym when this occurs after I have thought about what might have caused the issue myself. I understand that FE1 ROMs have serious space issues, and if it becomes an issue when compiling, I will either use the dictionaries provided or ask for help if I do not understand how to use dictionary compression. I am willing to try to figure things out for myself while resources or guides are not available by Polinym or anyone else on how things in FE1 work. I will use common sense when it comes to figuring out what each text file does. I understand that Basilisk is not capable of editing every single possible thing in the ROM. Polinym is only one man, and has lot of obligations, like to his indie game, Octo Vinctum. I acknowledge that the protagonist of vanilla FE1’s name is Mars, and will not try to misrepresent this character’s name. I am aware that I cannot win against Gharnef. The editor has a Unit Maker GUI built-in, which should aid you in editing units for now. Enemy units can be created by using the code provided in the ThingMaker.py code file I included with the repo. If you know how to code in Python, you can hopefully figure out how ThingMaker works and will be easier-ish for making enemy units. I hope this thing works for you.   12. Basically the same thing, except he's waiting for you in "jigoku", otherwise known as "hell". Whenever I'd see the line in Monshou, I'd always joke about how him saying "in Book II" would be so much funnier. Come time to translate the line for FE1, I decided to er on the side of funny rather than debate over whether it'd be considered a "swear" here. On further reflection, it's more than likely reference to theological eternal punishment, so maybe I'll change it back. Regardless, SNES is still funnier. 🙂 Heehee... 🙂 Looks like Gnip missed it in his rush to skip the level. The real one is pretty obvious. Nope, "Lowell" is just a treat. The original Japanese equivalent to that part of the line is just "Mars." I added "Lowell" to match the anime localization (in my opinion, the best version), and so players could be aware that he has a last name. Oh, and congratz on beating FE1 to @gnip! I'm so glad my translation didn't crash on you. 😛

The liberties I deliberately took are tiny and few and far between, mostly censorship for personal reasons or just as a little treat well, except for maybe the one you're about to see 😛 Anything else is just me goofing up with the translation. Your feedback is very helpful if/when I go back to revise my translation.

During my first run of translating, I hadn't heard about the whole "mafuu" evil wind thing, so rather than translate the name literally, I just stuck with the classic fan translation "Maph" that I already liked. Later on though, I did read a thread on where "Imhullu" came from. But, I've since decided to keep it as "Maph" mostly because I'm a fan of it, second because fitting a nice localization of mafuu within the 7 character limit is a major challenge (not anymore, recently made my patch for longer item names stable). "Imhullu" seems like too much of a departure, adding a mythology reference that wasn't there in the original. If I ever localized the name, I wouldn't just call it "Mafuu", but something like "Demongale" or "Darkwind". Gharnef was left as the "Dark Pontifex" because he just isn't a demon king. Aside from the dragons, all of the "demons" that he commands are just human. I give a lot more leeway to Japanese names in hiragana, so any sort of dark ruler would do. And, believe it or not, for the sake of official-ness I decide to use IS's localized names if and when they are appropriate and accurate, so in this case "Dark Pontifex" fits the original Japanese meaning and makes reference to the whole priest-magic connection that InterdimensionalObserver mentioned.
