Ema Skye
Normally I'd put this in the main Smash 4 topic but this is a really big deal and so I feel that it warrants it's own thread. During ordinary gameplay, many players of Smash Wii U have been given the error code "160-0103". The error code states that there's a problem with the system's memory. The console has trouble reading the game's files in memory and it then crashes. Deleting the save files doesn't do anything to remove the error. If you contact Nintendo about the error, as the error code suggests, they will tell you to format your system memory or send it in for repairs. DON'T FORMAT THE SYSTEM MEMORY! IT WILL BRICK YOUR CONSOLE! For those who aren't aware of what brick means, a bricked console is essentially useless. It is incapable of performing any action beyond sitting on a surface as if it were literally a brick, The error code happens, from what's been discovered, at random though it has been linked to For Glory play to some extents. The glitch also effects both physical and digital copies. The error code only affects Smash Wii U's files. Every other game remains fully functional as of the time of this post. I have no idea if Nintendo is aware of this glitch but for now if it shows up you will have to send it in for repairs. If you are really paranoid about the error code, your best bet is to avoid playing online until something to deal with this glitch is created. For more info as well as video footage of the glitch, see this article: http://www.gamnesia.com/news/new-smash-bros.-for-wii-u-error-can-leave-the-game-unplayable#.VH10qzHF-T- NEW UPDATE: There appears to be a connection between having an SD card in the console and the error message appearing. If you're paranoid about receiving the error code, don't play with an SD card! I seriously can't understate this. DON'T PLAY SMASH U WITH AN SD CARD IN THE CONSOLE AS THERE IS A STRONG CORRELATION BETWEEN CONSOLES HAVING AN SD CARD AND GETTING THE ERROR CODE Also avoid downloading the new version patch as connections between the update and the error code exist. kingddd
Luckily i have not encountered any of this issue and seems like the majority haven't either. Seems like another rare occurrence like the Mario Kart 8 incident.

TheRealBlueBlur
All of a sudden, I'm not so sure that buying SSBU is such a good idea... I'm glad the 3DS version isn't this messed up at least. Also, just wondering, how do you know it bricks? Did someone actually try formatting it? Ema Skye
Also, just wondering, how do you know it bricks? Did someone actually try formatting it? I've heard multiple accounts of it bricking by trying to format it. From what I've heard, it will fail to format the system memory and tell you to turn it off. When you turn it back on, it's bricked. New Report. It appears that there may also be a connection to having an SD card in the console while playing the game. Several people experiencing the error code have had their SD card in the console while the game was running. There are also connections with the patch updates as well so I'd avoid downloading the new version. EDIT: Nearly everyone reporting the error code has had an SD card inserted in the console. DO NOT PLAY THE GAME WITH AN CD CARD OR YOU RUN THE RISK OF GETTING THE ERROR The error code is now showing up with other games, including Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World. This may be an issue with the hardware and Smash Bros. Wii U is not totally responsible. Major news sites are slowly getting informed about this. This may be an issue with the hardware and Smash Bros. Wii U is not totally responsible. Major news sites are slowly getting informed about this. Seems like a general Wii U issue more than the game itself. So luckily it's not smash bros specific issue but more so on a faulty Wii U. The cause is most likely bad flash memory screwing up the entire hardware. Chances are because more people are buying Wii U's more reports of it are occurring. I personally think the risk is very low and you should not really be that worried about it especially if you recently purchased a Wii U and you got the 1 year warranty. I've only had 2 crashes since release in my entire Wii U lifespan and I have had no issues since then. http://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/2o2ems/error_1600103_its_not_smash http://wiiuforums.com/wii-u-support-troubleshooting/8313-bricked-wiiu-after-error-160-0103-a.html https://gbatemp.net/threads/system-memory-error-can-i-backup-data-to-a-usb-drive-reformat-and-then-recover.366856/ http://techforums.nintendo.com/thread/34658 http://smashboards.com/threads/error-code-160-0103.380245/page-3#post-18104347 http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/631516-wii-u/68203758 http://techforums.nintendo.com/message/115652 Edited December 2, 2014 by kingddd
Jedi
Thank you for the information. I will keep my eyes out when I get the game around Christmas
Ema Skye
I totally agree with kingddd. There's no reason to up and quit playing on your Wii U. But I do think it would be wise to take the necessary precautions to avoid this happening (namely being not playing with the SD card which only seems to be more prevalent among the effected consoles), especially if your warranty is expired.
