Julius Nepos
Thank you for the very detailed explanation! I think I understood the most. Is 28 the exp. base rate? (like 30 in the GBA and (3)DS ones) You're welcome. 28 is the archer's base exp, as listed on the FE1 base stats page.
Topazd
Oops, hadn't paid much attention to level additions to the base exp. Well, at least that's clarified now.
Julius Nepos
Good news, everyone! I'm not dead, and neither is this LP! [spoiler=Chapter 4, part 1]We're finally in Orleans, but here we find enemies waiting for us. To save myself the time and effort (and bring you a better result), I will henceforth be using the images used in DKII's FE1 LP to show you the full map at chapter start. Credit for those images goes to DKII, of course. Please go check out the LP itself, it's pretty great, both as a read and as a source of info on FE1. It can be found here. This is the first chapter with combat preparations. "Press start when the remainder's 0" is to be taken very literally: you can't start the map with fewer than the maximum amount of characters selected. Let's check the map first. The return of manly man. 'Benson' is 'Bentheon' in the official translation. One of the social knights is called Machis (Matthis). I'm guessing he's recruitable. Now enemy data: Benson; 2 social knights, level 1, lance; 1 social knight, level 1, armorslayer; Machis; 1 social knight, level 1, iron sword; 1 cleric, level 1, live; 2 horsemen, level 1, bow; 1 armor knight, level 1, lance; 2 archers, level 1, steel bow; 1 thief, level 3, iron sword; 4 fighters, level 1, axe; 2 hunters, level 1, bow; 1 thief, level 1, iron sword. Let's pick some characters. You can only see your characters' names, level, HP and items. There's no such thing as viewing their stats, managing their items, let alone any of the other fancy stuff modern FE games allow you to do in combat preparations. Alright, I'm ready. Story time. defeated. First I'll show off our team. Inventories are as follows: Marth: iron sword, rapier; Kain: iron sword, lance, vulnerary; Abel: iron sword, javelin; Doga: iron sword, lance; Gordon: bow, steel bow, bowgun; Sheeda: lance, javelin, silver lance, vulnerary; Maji: axe, steel axe, hand axe, hammer; Barts: axe, hand axe, steel axe, hammer; Oguma: iron sword, steel sword; Daros: axe, steel axe, devil axe; Kashim: bow; Julian: iron sword, lockpick; Rena: warp, relieve, live; Navarre: iron sword, kill sword. Now let's start. The thief doubled. :/ gained 1 defense! gained 1 HP! I love this guy. He has a 5.9% chance of getting this level-up pattern. it. This was the house next to the lake. This was the house next to the storage. The only other noteworthy event is Kain giving his vulnerary to Julian. In the enemy phase Daros lures out a fighter. He's going to profit from the avoid bonus the water gives him. By the way, most of the social knights and horsemen advance towards us, but the two social knights closest to Benson don't move. Turn 2 start. Julian takes down the hunter on the bridge like a pro. Julian (together with Sheeda) is moving north to stop the thief, by the way. For our eastern situation, I'm going to use a little something called teamwork. Good job, Kain. At least he got speed... More avoid bonus. Or not. >_< He killed him anyway. Doga no want choke points. Doga want kill. Abel, this is perfect. Now this isn't much fun. Navarre buys a hammer for Daros, but that's it. Enemy phase. He really wants to show off the speed he gained in his last level-up, huh? New turn. As the rest of the army moves west to meet the enemy cavalry, Kain finishes the hunter. At least, I think it was Kain. This is why I should have updated before going on vacation. Gordon is going to lure out the horsemen. He's going to get doubled anyway, so he equips the bowgun. But this horseman has differen plans, so Kashim shows off his dodging skills. This horseman has different plans too, but Kashim dodges no more. New turn. Good job, probably-Abel. Kashim finishes. Woop woop, item get. Gordon does... something. Let's see if the steel axe is strong enough to finish what Gordon started. It's perfect. Now this is not perfect. Fortunately Navarre knows how to deal with this stuff. Finally got you. You can't run away anymore now. ...Okay, I'll get you next turn. Enemy phase! This is what he says before he engages you in combat. It's pretty obvious who is going to recruit him. Speaking of Rena... She dodges the enemy attack and gets her first exp. Next time... let's recruit Machis. Blackzero
The armory guy's face though. Why can't the new FEs have faces that good?
Julius Nepos
New FEs may have convenient combat preparations, FE1 has the best armory guy. [spoiler=Chapter 4, part 2]Rena is going to talk to Machis, so Navarre gets out of her way (and uses this opportunity to take down the horseman with the aid of his buddy Gordon). Ah, they're siblings. So does that mean Rena is from Macedonia? Yesterday we learned that some country called Macedonia has invaded Orleans. Today we learn that Rena is from Macedonia, but she betrayed the king. Punctuation. Please. Macedonia confirmed for Durhua's buddy-in-arms. Best line in the game right here. Wow, burn. Mods, ban this man for derailing. Smartass. This subtle hint causes dramatic irony. This recruitment conversation is a good way of working with the NES's technical limitations, in my opinion. [spoiler=Machis's - luck]0 luck: 3 times.1 luck: 3 times.2 luck: 1 time.3 luck: 3 times.4 luck: 3 times.5 luck: 3 times.6 luck: 4 times.7 luck: 5 times. Machis buys himself an iron sword. Maji visits the lower house. Kain visits the house in the corner. Kashim gives the armorslayer to Navarre. Now I got you. New turn. The armor knight and the archers have a great defensive position - let's see if I can lure them out of it. The answer is yes. BARTS, NO! New turn. Barts redeems himself. ...Or not. 13.7% chance of this level-up pattern. That's alright. 7.8% chance. YEAH, GO... I forgot who you were... I think Kain. Marth visits the village. Nice, some cash. Meanwhile, Julian and Sheeda cross the river to reach the island. Julian visits the house. That's 'dragon knights,' in case you hadn't guessed. Sheeda visits the arena. Now, how does the arena work in FE1? Let’s see. The bet is 158 gold. I can now predict what class + level + weapon opponent I will be fighting. The opponent’s level is always the same as your level. Take a look at the Arena FAQ here (scroll down to '5. Arena lists'). First, multiply gambled gold by ten; this is the amount of gold you will win if you win in the arena. Now find your character’s class in the FAQ. Use the following formula: gold won – 40 × (level – 1). Now match the result with your opponent in the Arena FAQ. Let’s take our current case as an example. Gambled gold is 158, so won gold is 158 × 10 = 1580. Sheeda (a level 3 pegasus knight) will be the one fighting in the arena, so we look up ‘Pegasus Knight’ in the Arena FAQ. Now we use the formula: 1580 – 40 × (3 – 1) = 1500. Now we look up 1500 under ‘Pegasus Knight’ in the Arena FAQ. It says ‘Pegasus Knight (Spear)’ (note: ‘spear’ is just a different fan translation for ‘lance’). This means that our opponent will be a level 3 pegasus knight with a lance. Well, what did I say? Let’s test some more. Sheeda takes a bet of 140 gold. 140 × 10 – 40 × (3 – 1) = 1320. 1320 is a social knight with a lance. Sheeda takes a bet of 139 gold. 139 × 10 – 40 × (3 – 1) = 1310. 1310 is a social knight with a lance. Sheeda takes a bet of 159 gold. 159 × 10 – 40 × (3 – 1) = 1510. 1510 is a pegasus knight with a lance. I've tested enough now. Let's fight! Results of the first round. Woohoo! Results of the second round. Oh yeah! :( 10.2% chance. I'm actually going to be super careful with the arena in the future because you can't withdraw from an arena fight. I do remember one time though... the fight went on for really long and then the arenamonger just ended it in a draw... I hope to be able to recreate such an event in this LP so as to find out when a draw occurs. Enemy phase. Yeah, it was Kain. gained 1 speed! gained 1 HP! That's a reasonable level-up. 15.6% chance. New turn start. Kain moves out. :// ://// Abel, I love you... 3.9% chance of this level-up pattern. At least he doesn't miss. On the enemy phase, the other social knight moves out too, for some reason. New turn. Good job, Abel. Good job, er... Navarre? Only the boss remains now. New turn. Marth visits the village. Guy! With hat! They know each other, apparently. 'Marich' is 'Merric' in the official translation. Uhh... Khadein? Now that sounds interesting. He has Excalibur and a freeze. I'll end this part with a fun fact: in FE11, the two villages in this map are switched around. Edited August 1, 2015 by Hattusili I

Julius Nepos
[spoiler=Chapter 4, part 3] New turn. Gordon, why? Barts, why? Doga, why? I know: it's the low hit rates. I overestimated them... Let's get some high hit in here then. Marich, why? Meh, at least he hit once. Oguma, why? That's the spirit, Navarre! No death quote for this guy. Item get. gained 1 HP! 13.7% chance of getting this bad level-up. New turn. You guessed it right: arena time. Marth (level 2) takes a bet of 136 gold. 136 × 10 - 40 × (2 - 1) = 1320. 1320 is a magician with thunder. Smooth sailing for Marth. New turn. Marich (level 1) takes a bet of 135 gold. 135 × 10 - 40 × (1 - 1) = 1350. 1350 means a magician with thunder. Exp get. I want to be careful with my tome usage though, so Marich isn't going to get any more arena battles now. New turn. And another new turn. Now it's Doga's turn to test his might. Doga is level 2, takes a bet of 139 gold. 139 × 10 - 40 × (2 - 1) = 1350. 1350 means an armor knight with a lance. They both do 2 damage, but Doga doubles and has higher hit. Doga wants to show off that he has a higher rate. gained 1 weapon level! gained 1 HP! Couldn't you have done as well on your level-up as in your fight, Doga? :/ 17.6% chance. Final turn? Nah. This was a 139 gold bet. 139 × 10 - 40 × (3 - 1) = 1310. 1310 means a cavalier with a lance. This actually isn't looking so good. Oguma will have to rely on his higher HP and hit. What did I say? Like a boss. Now let's see what happens when you enter the arena without any weapon equipped: Hint: he doesn't let you die (or even fight, for that matter). Final turn! Who is this Nina and who is this Hardin? I guess Hardin is some general/commander/bodyguard, but Nina? Maybe. Julius Nepos
1 DAMAGE I know, it's TERRIBLE. You know this is kinda of an odd request, but when you get the General character, could you have him use a Lance? I've never seen the General Lance Animation in FE1. Also get used to seeing that frowning portrait alot! Sure thing! I'll even try to make a video or a GIF out of it, but I'm not very good at that. If I recall correctly, it isn't much different from the armor knight lance animation though (except that it's a general instead of an armor knight). Medeus must have a hard time telling his commanders apart, what with them looking exactly the same and all.
Julius Nepos
[spoiler=Chapter 5, part 1] This is the map for our new chapter. Looks like the northern castle has already been taken by now... Enemy data: 2 pegasus knights, level 1, lance; 1 social knight, level 3, javelin (it's the one most to the west); 4 social knights, level 1, lance; Merak (on the left side of the castle); 1 armor knight, level 3, lance (on the right side of the castle); 3 thieves, level 3, iron sword; 1 cleric, level 1, live; 1 armor knight, level 1, lance; 3 archers, level 1, steel bow; Wendel. Turban man! Could this be Hardin? Then this is... Nina? Damn, guess we won't find out who she is then. Turn 1 starts. I don't get the story. Inside which castle is she waiting now? The one overrun by the enemy or the non-existant one where the Orleans soldiers are? Maybe there's a castle farther south that we can't see? Anyway, before we begin, let's take a look at our team first. Inventory: iron sword (28), rapier (29), silver sword (17). So the guy from the southern castle gave us a silver sword for Hardin. Hmm... Inventory: iron sword (25), lance (31). Inventory: iron sword (27), javelin (18), knight killer (14). Inventory: bow (23), steel bow (28), bowgun (33). Inventory: lance (28), javelin (21), silver lance (20), vulnerary (5). Inventory: axe (34), hand axe (13), steel axe (28), hammer (40). Inventory: iron sword (35), lockpick (16). Inventory: live (16), relieve (16), warp (7), vulnerary (5). Inventory: iron sword (29), kill sword (16), armor killer (22). Inventory: freeze (19), excalibur (33). And these are our new people: Inventory: steel bow (28). 'Sedgar' in the official translation. Inventory: steel bow (28). So our turban man was indeed Hardin. I have a feeling he won't be the one getting the silver sword... Inventory: steel sword (38). 'Roshea' in the official translation. Inventory: lance (38), iron sword (42). I get the feeling I've seen you before somewhere... 'Vyland' in the official translation. Inventory: lance (38), iron sword (42). Then there's two enemy characters. He's the bishop up north. 'Wendell' in the official translation. Inventory: thunder. I wonder who would be able to recruit him? I've seen no hints, so... Marth? Or maybe he has ties with our own magician... Another manly man. 'Merach' in the official translation. Inventory: silver lance. Turn one's player phase is used up entirely on movement (no fighting whatsoever), so I didn't bother taking more screenshots before the enemy phase. One noteworthy thing: Biraku gave his iron sword to Hardin. What a good way to kick off a fresh chapter. Turn 2. Keep it up! gained 1 skill! gained 1 luck! gained 1 HP! Woohoo! 27.3% chance. Current score: five enemies taken down, no damage taken. Marth can't talk to Wendel... Sheeda visits the house. If we're going to go into the castle (and I guess we will be, since it's probably crawling with Macedonians), we shouldn't forget to bring Julian. Marth gives the silver sword to Navarre. Before I end the player phase, I'll let you take a look at our formation on the western front: Now the enemy phase. Roshe shows the good stuff. Roshe shows the bad stuff. Wendel talks to Marth. Hey, that's the place where Marich studied magic! I sense that Garnef is bad news. (He's 'Gharnef' in the official translation.) New objective: liberate Khadein from Garnef. Good Biraku. Bad Biraku. [spoiler=Wendel's recruitment.]Marth can't talk to Wendel. However, Wendel doesn't attack; instead, he moves towards Marth and will talk to him if he is in range. But there is another way to recruit Wendel. Namely by having Marich talk to him. Note: Marich can talk to Wendel, but Wendel won't talk to Marich. Sensei! The lack of commas in this translation frustrates me. Again. side. [spoiler=Wendel's - luck.]0 luck: 5 times.1 luck: 5 times.2 luck: 4 times.3 luck: 2 times.4 luck: 2 times.5 luck: 4 times.6 luck: 3 times. New turn. Wendel's stats. Besides a thunder, he also has a magic shield ('barrier' in the official translation) after recruitment. Since the eastern front is all clear now, our main force moves westward, to cross the southern bridge. Three exceptions: Sheeda moves north to reach the house, Marth moves northwest to reach the village, and Kain moves northwest to block the thief's passage over the northern bridge. The situation at the western front is a little heated and could turn sour if I don't plan carefully. Biraku and Zagaro take on one of the archers. Wolf takes down the thief Roshe had already weakened in last turn's enemy phase. Hardin singlehandedly takes down the other archer. Roshe tries, but fails... again... Enemy phase. What a hero. I forgot all about that social knight with the javelin. Biraku thinks it's a good idea to imitate Roshe. Will the situation at the western front be resolved without any Orleans soldiers dying? Find out in the next update! Edited August 13, 2015 by Hattusili I
Julius Nepos
[spoiler=Chapter 5, part 2]Forgot to upload last turn's enemy phase, whoops. So here it is now. I like Wolf. I'll keep using him if there's enough space on my team. Haha, Wolf is better at dodging than you! Biraku, stop sucking please. New turn. ...Are you a troll? Is this your level of trolling? first time! 'Peraty' is 'Pyrathi,' 'Mamkute' is 'Manakete' in the official translation. In case in the opening didn't already make it clear enough, here's another explanation on what Mamkutes are. It's a firestone! Hmm... maybe this is something Mamkutes can use? Sheeda visits the house near the mountains. The one east of the river. MAH BOI! Navarre + armorslayer = <3 Kain too OP, pls nerf gained 1 wlv! gained 1 HP! ...I didn't mean that, Kain. 21.5% chance. Wolf and Abel display some teamwork. Hardin, no... My next screenshot is enemy phase. Good one, Hardin! New turn. Our westward advance is going well. Only Marth and Sheeda are a bit behind (but Sheeda can cross all terrain). Roshe and Biraku have retreated into the safety of the woods due to low HP. Fun fact: In my first FE1 playthrough I lost Roshe in this chapter because I accidentally pressed 'End' instead of 'Unit' at the beginning of my turn. I should have withdrawn Roshe to safety that turn... gained 1 speed! gained 1 luck! gained 1 HP! See, Kain? That's a good level-up. 11.3% chance. I'm sending you off to the armory this turn. An iron sword for Biraku, a steel sword and a javelin for Kain, a bowgun for Wolf, a lance for Abel. I have enough steel bows and hammers already. Kain buys his steel sword and javelin. Enemy phase. That's the good stuff, Hardin! Hardin may also remain on my team if there is enough space left. New turn. Excalibur! Door Key!! We got this from the armor knight on the castle, Vincent. Bow power! Abel never fails me. Sheeda visits another house near the mountains. West of the river this time. Beware of reinforcements coming from the forts, huh? Noted. Roshe needs some healing. As you can see, I've moved Barts and Abel to protect Wolf, just in case the boss moves or reinforcements appear. New turn. The boss didn't move and reinforcements didn't appear. More Excalibur! No death quote for this guy. gained 1 luck! gained 1 defense! Marich thwomp. 5.5% chance. Silver lance? That changes things... Alright, here's the plan: Kain is going to give his lance to Abel (he already has a steel sword anyway), Abel is going to give his knight killer to Kain, and Marich is going to give his silver lance to Abel. Abel won't need to buy a lance then; Hardin will buy one instead. Just in case of reinforcements. New turn. Still no sign of the promised reinforcements. Biraku desperately needed this. A whole turn gone, and still no word! I'm going to move my units towards the forts, so I'll be ready for them. I'm not seizing the castle yet, because Hardin still needs to buy his lance. Alright, Hardin has his lance, and the reinforcements still aren't here. I'm seizing the castle. shortly. Punctuation! Well, this guy looks like the King of Orleans. And apparently Nina is the Princess of Orleans. Fair enough. By the way, fun fact: It's possible to seize the castle on either of the two castle tiles. So it's possible to clear this chapter without even fighting the boss (simply defeat the armor knight guarding the right castle tile and seize that tile). [spoiler=Reinforcements.]I loaded up a save state to get the info on the reinforcements. The reinforcements are as follows:fort northeast of the castle: social knight, level 1, lance (turns 11-16);fort northwest of the castle: pegasus knight, level 3 javelin (turns 13-16). [spoiler=Death quotes.]Okay, I realized I forgot Machis's and Marich's death quotes in chapter 4, so here they are anyway. Machis has no death quote. How typical. Also typical. Doga, is that you? Typical, typical. Killing Wendel as an enemy results in no death quote; if he is killed as one of your characters, he leaves you with this very unique death quote. Julius Nepos
[spoiler=Chapter 6, part 1] Mappity map. Inventory: iron sword. There's a thief in there. It looks like a prison. He's armed though. No hints at whom to recruit him with, so my guess is my Marth. Or maybe it's a thief-to-thief situation, so it's Julian. He's worse than Julian anyway. Ricardo = Rickard Inventory: silver sword. No manly man this time. This guy is probably the leader of the Macedonian invasion of Orleans. Our first encounter with the general class. High defense, negligible speed. Silver sword could be dangerous. A situation for our magic users, Navarre and Marth. Mariones = Emereus Enemy Data: Ricardo; 3 armor knights, level 3, lance; 2 archers, level 1, steel bow (in the north); 1 cleric, level 1, live (in the north); 1 armor knight, level 3, steel sword (guarding the northwestern pathway); 1 social knight, level 3, lance (the left one); 1 social knight, level 3, silver lance (the right one); 1 magician, level 1, fire (next to the chest); 4 thieves, level 3, iron sword; 2 archers, level 3, steel bow (near the throne); 1 magician, level 3, thunder (near the throne); 1 cleric, level 5, relieve (near the throne); Mariones. Chapter start. Thanks for telling me your strategy. Alright, I guess I'll have to get to the chests before the thieves do, if I want the items that's inside them. First turn. But first: our team. Inventory: iron sword, rapier, firestone, door key. Inventory: iron sword, knight killer, steel sword, javelin. Inventory: iron sword, javelin, silver lance, lance. Inventory: bow, steel bow, bowgun. Inventory: lance, javelin, silver lance, vulnerary. Inventory: iron axe, hand axe, steel axe, hammer. Inventory: iron sword, thief key (lockpick). Inventory: live, relieve, warp, vulnerary. Inventory: iron sword, kill sword, silver sword, armorslayer. Inventory: thunder, Excalibur, freeze. Inventory: iron sword, steel sword, iron lance. Inventory: bowgun, steel bow. Inventory: magic shield. Inventory: iron sword, steel sword. Marth opens the door and Julian gets to the chest. I have to move quickly, to prevent the enemy thieves from stealing the treasure. Enemy phase. Silver lance. Ricardo talks to Marth. New turn. Let's look at new guy's stats: Inventory: iron sword. [spoiler=Ricardo's recruitment.]Ricardo's situation is a lot like Wendel's. He won't attack any of your units. Instead, he'll move towards Marth, and talk to him when he's in range. Marth can't talk to him though. Julian can talk to Ricardo, but Ricardo won't talk to Julian. Here's Julian and Ricardo's recruitment conversation: Nonsense. Thieves can't class-change! Burn... rewards! [spoiler=Ricardo's - luck.]0 luck: 6 times.2 luck: 4 times.4 luck: 6 times.6 luck: 9 times. See that? Those thieves are dangerously close to that chest. Now I'll have to warp someone over there to protect the chest. Hmm, now I wish I'd brought Doga instead of Wendel. I have come up with a back-up plan though. First Barts tears this armor knight to pieces (though he shouldn't have missed, grr). Wolf, my man. gained 1 HP! Wolf, no. 12.1% chance of this disappointment. Excellent. The plan: part 2. Enemy phase. Sheeda is in danger. New turn. Let's find out what this thing does. Wow, Abel. Hardin does it well. Wolf, my man! Navarre does good stuff. More vworp. Need to protect that chest at the top. :/ She needed this. Enemy phase. GG GG

Julius Nepos
[spoiler=Chapter 6, part 2]Some important plot note: Mariones is a general. Generals are sent by Durhua. Mariones is the commander of the Macedonian army invading Orleans. So Durhua is probably the King of Macedonia. Alright, let's get started again. Knight killer!
