  1. Ah, and they are still called "Bodygrd" here - I was wrong about "Archanea" being the problem, at least directly. The actual issue was that part of the names table was 1 byte longer than expected, which caused the end character of "Bodygrd" - the last name - to be overwritten with the first class name ("Lord"). Or something like that. I believe I fixed it, but if you happen to have a B2C20 save I would be happy to check. I also replaced "Chiki" with "TIki" - that item description was the only place remaining.
  2. Ack! I think those guys are supposed to be "Archanea" enemies - that overflows and causes problems. I'll have to use an abbreviation - just need to knock off one letter, the question is which one? Any remaining instances of Chiki -> Tiki should be very straightforward. I will update with a new patch, probably not tomorrow though. Thanks again for finding bugs!
  3. Gotoh is such a jerk he doesn't even fight with you! Really weird thing to leave out. I think when I played Shadow Dragon (after FE3 but long before FE1) I assumed making him playable was a remake thing, and was really surprised when he joined me in FE1. I agree that Gotoh feels like a big meanie even when he's trying to be nice and help you. I don't remember Shadow Dragon and New Mystery well enough to know if that feeling is warranted in the official localizations, but that's the vibe I remember. What is your opinion of Eugen's beard? Clear best [story] advisorman, I think. Ward has some of the same, uh, idiosyncrasies in Navaron, but at least to where I am in the game (Ch 8) he hasn't screwed up any map deployments like Eugen wisely does.
  4. Yes, it's definitely helpful that Sigurd is loyally following orders that he knows are wrong (hmm...). But it's not completely flipped - Chagall is not exactly a Marth or other generic FE lord figure.
  5. Yeah, I feel this way about FE4 Eldigan. He's probably less stupid than Camus - Chagall is a bad king and a bad choice to be loyal to but he's no Medeus - but I think he's written to be pretty dumb and he has his own contrasts in Lachesis and Ares. So you get your blind loyalty is bad theme, and in FE4 it resonates especially well with the first gen theme that good - or at least "noble" - intentions can go badly awry. A fuller discussion of that will come, I'm sure.
  6. I know you already talked about it in FE1, but since I missed it, I am very amused by the idea that Lawrence is supposed to show that Camus is a vainglorious, stubborn fool. It is quite a contrast to have them in the same chapter.
  7. Thank you! I moved around a pause in the Chapter 10 opening, but I needed to add one as well. That's fixed, and I updated the zip file in the original post. Please post anything else you notice!
  8. Indeed, they made it really easy to make the changes. Thank you as well for your excellent hacking modifications - as you could probably tell, SNES assembly was never my forte, and I haven't exactly picked up much over the intervening time period.
  9. tldr: Here's a patch for Mystery of the Emblem that differs from the latest Robert the Sable patch only in that it uses NA rather than PAL names. (Full name changelist below) The other big note is that I have NOT played all the way through this patch, though I'd be a bit surprised if there are any errors not present in Robert the Sable's patch. So it's a little bit at your own risk right now. fe3_na_names.zip Longer story: Recently I wanted to play Mystery of the Emblem again, and maybe also Shadow Dragon and New Mystery with it. However, as an American, I am now used to the American names in Shadow Dragon, so the PAL names used in the updated Mystery patch are just a little bit offputting. While I was idly considering finding my old tools to update the names in my and Vincent's patch, I saw that Robert the Sable released his tools for hacking, and a project idea was born. Some small changes later, I think I have everything working. Of particular note is that I've only played through the Chapter 1 opening of both books and the Book 1 final chapter & ending to do some spot checks - it's possible that I screwed something up elsewhere, but I don't think so, because Robert's tools helpfully warn when there's line overruns or collisions. (I had several of both categories to fix - the NA names are generally longer, especially the places names like Archanea and Macedon.) Anyway, I thought this might be generally useful, so here it is. An important note is that I did this because it was easy, thanks to Robert's excellent tools, so while I'm happy to fix any errors I introduced, I'm not looking to take on any big projects. The patches are intended for unheadered roms - one of the 1.0 version, and one for 1.1. If there's an error, try getting rid of your header. Full name changelist, using this name chart: Feels kinda fun to release a patch again after 15 years. 🙂 Credits: Me: Original patch hacking and NA names changes VincentASM: Original script Quirino: Updated script and hacking Robert the Sable: Updated hacking, and extremely useful FE3 tools on github
  10. It doesn't help that there aren't any multi-weapon classes in Old Mystery, so Killer Lance guy in this chapter could only be backed up by a crappy Javelin. I think Kaga figured out how to make some bosses annoying in Genealogy (Pavise, and auto-weapon switching Adaptability (#KagaDidItFirst)) and Thracia (overstat Gomez in 8x, leadership stars). And then, yeah, you get Binding Blade's throne bonuses, but that's about it until, uh, early Shadow Dragon? Although Kaga starts doing bosses better in Tear Ring and especially Berwick, at least as far as I've played. I like the goofy FE1 portraits much more than the super serious Shadow Dragon and New Mystery portraits. But, yeah, Old Mystery lost the charm of FE1 without actually looking good which is a difficult place to be in.
  11. I did the hacking - VincentASM, who went on to create some site called Serenes Forest, supplied the translation. I'm very pleased that others have followed up and fixed the bugs I introduced and improved Vincent's script. I probably should've made it easier for them by releasing my tools, but they were written in perl by college student me so likely they would have been impossible to use anyway. Pretty much. No Pugi / Bhuj, doesn't count. (Samson was good for me, but I used Lionel for the same thing - indoor combat with Holmes - and he turned out better for me. A lot better than the zero axe users in Book 2, at least.) Oi! What's that supposed to mean? I'll have you know, Ward's the Endgame Ready Beard. He wants his horsie though, to gallivant about warding people, as I found out when I tried to do chapter 3 without him because I didn't want to buy his beard a horse. Perhaps not quite as dependent on it as Jeigan, apparently.
  12. Just found this! Don't have too much to say about the NES games (I've only played each once), but I'm always excited for the SNES games. I'll try to keep obnoxious commenting on two week old topics to a minimum, and then actually follow along. Yeah, sorry about that. I was using a pretty thick font for letters because I didn't know how to add a variable width font, but I just lazily used numbers that I'm pretty sure were already in the game. Kaga anticipating Berwick! #KagaDidItFirst (AndAlsoSecond) Wait, who's the broken TRS axe user? Samson? I just finished TRS for the first time, so I'll add my two cents - it's incredibly slow to play, and actively wants you to warpskip late game maps like Thracia does, but it's got fun busted units & weapons to deal with the challenging bits. I really enjoyed it, super clunky exposition and all. (It also has the worst map in the entire franchise so there's that.)
  13. Oh, cool, because I finally found my old stuff (3 hard drives ago!), and I didn't relish looking into it any further. Glad you fixed it. Probably the only thing that could possibly be useful is my insert all script, because it contains everything I changed. So if you want to know where the battle animation menu lives so you can update it, you can find it in here. (It's possibly easier to just search the ROM...) http://pastebin.com/dPra6NJb
  14. Not entirely! I use and love your site and pop into the forums occasionally. I've just been too lazy to create a forum account, but I can't pass up now that I've seen this topic. Great to see somebody updating our patch! If I can provide any help (without doing any, y'know, real work), let me know. I still have my (old, ugly, written in perl) tools on a hard drive somewhere. I never knew about that either, for the same reason. Not sure how I screwed that one up. I'm pretty sure I know what happened here, and it's just in the last version I released - I never ran into it when I was actually playing. I think it's a typo in my ending inserter that either screws up a pointer or offsets the text. I'll look into it. That's exactly what motivated me several years ago. :)
