  1. most of your questions can be answered by the ultimate tutorial.

    1. color palettes are different for each class in the sense that green one one area of a class could be green on a different area of a different class. EX. the green armor on a cavalier could correspond to a mercenarie's hair color instead.

    2. im not sure about each part but the dimension for a the whole portrait needs to be 128 pixels by 112 pixels and using only 16 colors.

    3. depends on your artistic skill and patience. you could try the lazy method of just shrinking down your headshot.

    4. read arch's eventing guide or the ultimate tutorial. the answer of this covers a broad range of topics in hacking, you would need to learn quite a few things that are not limited to: making a map, eventing, color editing, classes editing, characters, etc. the basic answer would be knowing how to make a map and doing some basic eventing.

    5. you would just need mouth talking frames. fastest way for colors would be knowing how to use photoshop, thats fastest for me anyways. you should look for the portrait tutorial, that would answer a bunch of your questions, if i recall correctly, there should be templates and all that good stuff as well.

  2. your error might be because of the free space you chose. never assume the location of free space, its something i go by and nothing has ever went wrong yet. i dont know whether or not the space you used is indeed all free spaces or just some of it is.

    try using 00D00000 this time with the same steps you taken and it should work. and should it work, be sure to make note of where you repoint things so there won't be some giant headache in the future if something messes up. also make sure you have "hex value" in datatype selected and "all" in search direction checked before you hit "replace all". and one more thing is, make sure you leave room under the repointed item table before adding more data. (the proper reverse erdian in this case would be 2C22BE08 (original item table is 08BE222C) and 0000D008 (new location is 08D00000).

    a good way to see how big your expanded table is, would be to use the select block function (ctrl + e) in HxD. note that the 00 and FFs that are highlighted is the expanded portion of your array table. of course, this is assuming you repointed to an empty section of the ROM, if you didn't, you can begin to imagine how hard it would be to differentiate between important data and your repointed table.

  3. I'm not 100% sure but I read that its a bad idea to immediately expand all the way to 32 mbs on your ROM. If someone else could verify this, that would be great. I've been working on my hack for a little over a year and I still haven't had the need to expand to 32 mbs yet.

    With that said, all you need to do is use FEditor and keep upping the max index in the animation manager as you keep adding more animations, that's all there is to adding animations. Make sure you have only one program open at a time and save your animation after every insert before adding more.

    The second part is pretty much called expanding and repointing.

    And to be able to access those additional slots, look for the corresponding notepad file in the nightmare folders, which should usually be in the same folder as the module.

  4. you can make units be whatever faction group you want. you just need to label accordingly.

    here are a few example line from the events in my hack, keep in mind its an example and not a template:

    UNIT Guy Myrmidon 0x00 Level(5, Ally, 0) [6,12] [6,12] [KillingEdge] Guard// guy is an ally unit here

    UNIT Guy Myrmidon 0x00 Level(5, Enemy, 0) [6,12] [6,12] [KillingEdge] Guard// guy is an enemy unit here

    i suggest watching ghast's eventing tutorial or reading up on Arch's eventing tutorial if the above didn't make any sense. Once you learn more about eventing, everything will fall into place.

  5. I recently came to the conclusion that I've been overwriting stuff on my ROM. Long story short, I did not repoint my spell association nightmare module properly and ended up writing over parts of the ROM. I tried to fix this by repointing the original section plus the additional bottom portion. This did not seem to fix my problem as my game still freezes up and random black patches appear on maps that normally don't have them.

    Is there anyway to fix this? I'd prefer it if I didn't have to start over as I put a lot of work into this.

    I can't revert back to old backups as I repointed the spell association module about a year ago when I originally started on this project thinking I did it correct, until recently when it was brought to my attention that I did not. I don't have backups that far back.

    I did try to copy vanilla hex from a fresh copy of FE7 to my edited ROM in an attempt to fix it but that didn't work out, hence the freezes and black patches still happening.

    I fully understand that time is precious and people would want to receive compensation. So with that said, is there any general rules or guidelines about how hiring help would work? Forms of payment?

    And thank you for all the problems you helped me solve over this past year Agro, I'll be sure to ask if I run into any musical problems.

    As for the more progress work, I uploaded the first patch/demo. Let me know if the link works, I tested it and everything seems to be fine so far.

    Foreword

    I've always been fascinated about the universe, space, other dimensions, the multi-verse theory, and other related topics generally considered the next frontier/final frontier. I believe in the multi-verse theory and wanted to create some sort of story based around that. And seeing as how there are a bunch of hacks out there set in what I consider parallel universes to the 'official' universes, I decided to go with using this multi-verse idea.

    Book of Eden is about a traveler from another dimension that whines up in one of those fire emblem universes. I known and talked to many people and one thing that intrigued me was how people always wanted or likes to either put self inserts, or create an alter ego of themselves, or even personal characters and put them into their favorite games/anime/universe. So I'm taking that concept and exploring how someone with little or no prior knowledge end up in one of my favorite universes.

    I love cross over between characters of different stories and finding out that in the official fire games, the dragon gate is an actual thing, I just might have an easier time bringing in other characters from different universes. So, in addition to the cast of Book of Eden, there will also be characters such as Ike from FE9&10 and Felix from Golden Sun TLA, just to name a few. Most will just be cameos but others will have both major and minor roles in the story.

    There's a saying that goes a little something like: "Born too late to explore the seas, but born too early to explore the stars." that perfectly captures how I feel about the current state of our world. Nothing beats the feeling of exploring new places and having adventures with those closest to you. Maybe the only exception to this, is having your heroes alongside you for the ride. So, I hope to convey this feeling through Book of Eden.

    A mostly revamped version of my hack in the direction I want it to go from now on.  I was tired of myself being indecisive so I took a long while to think about which direction I wanted the story to go in.  I changed quite a few chapters while leaving others the same.  Added in a lot more polish and story elements so the story makes more sense.  FYI, not everything is completely 100% polished because if I waited for that, I would never be releasing any updates until the end of time.

    I have also imported my hack and workflow from the normal programs to FEbuilder due to some compatibility issues and ease of workflow, so I'm sure there are still some elements that I forgot to re-insert.  So if you see a portrait or dialogue that you remembered not being there from the previous version I released so long ago, please let me know so I can fix it.  I can't think of any off the top of my head but I went over everything I could think of.

    This version of the hack goes from Prologue to Ch.12, no gaiden chapters, for a total of 13 chapters.

    Many if not all of the characters have new portraits inserted and their stats adjusted as well.  

    I'm still looking for help, so if you're interested, contact me and we'll see if we can work something out.

    Please, please let me know of any bugs or errors as I am the only playtester so I'm sure I missed something.

    Just a few hot fixes, namely compatiblity issuses with a few weapons.

    Fixed an error with Caela's death quote.

    Fixed weapon lock with Richard's Shikita. (Recently changed Lyn_t to Lyn so the supports would work properly)

    v1.22

    This patch contains a few bug fixes and eventing errors.

    The beginning of the support system is in place but dialogue yet.

    Auto cursor and status screen may freak out, but not game breaking.

    A few changes to character stats and rebalances.

    v1.21

    This patch includes fixes for a few spelling errors, text skips, several bugged death quotes, and some missing chapter goal events.

    A few of the characters had their stats re-balanced, so additional feedback on them would be great. I had complaints of the hack being too hard and no way to recover from being RNG-screwed.

    Further refinement and tweaks on the save system.

    v1.2

    This patch introduces my "save" system so ideally, you can resume with your current progress/characters when new future patches are released.

    Fixed long load times.

    NPC Lana no longer disappears when suspending.

    "One year later" CG should no longer appear.

    More polish done on chapter Prlg - 8.

    A few new additions to aesthetics.

    Total number of chapters is still nine, chapters prologue to eight.

    More "hotfixes".

    Tweaked Chapter 2 positions

    If you suspend during Chapter 2, "Lana" will disappear upon resuming. Only way to "fix" this currently is to restart the chapter. Not too game breaking but looking into it.

    Other minor fixes.

    Side effect includes long load times for chapter 3,4, and 7.(Currently still being looked at, cause unknown)

    The "One Year Later" cutscene plays after chapter 7, this is not suppose to happen so ignore it for the time being.

    Minor story changes for consistency.

    Custom spells no longer stalls the game while targeting snags.

    -The Auto-cursor and status screen may freak out but nothing game breaking. It has been seen starting on a non Lord character so you may want to turn off auto cursor if it bothers you.

  8. so i finally had time to go over my problem and only thing i can say is you were right, i am probably overwriting something important. but with that said, i've been combing over the sections in HxD and can't find the source of how to fix it so it looks like i'm going to have to start over, damn it. i tried to re-use data from a fresh ROM but no results. if anyone knows how to fix this, i would much appreciate the information.

    for now, i'll just restart my hack, could use a few changes anyways

    the above is what my spell animations list looks like currently.

    the 0xFFFF has always been there, but the bigger question is: is this the list you guys are referring to with the 0x45? do I just change the edited "slots" to default and start again at 0x45? (i do realize that the above is just the list for labeling the "slots" in nightmare, just fyi)

  10. go into nightmare and then into the chapter data editor.

    scroll down until you see 'goal window information'

    you can also change the chapter goal text by going to FEditor (ex. chapter 1 status text and window text are 0x65e and 0x65f, go to FEditor and type them in the input index)

  11. so in other words, are you guys are saying that the spells are or not undocumentated? because 0x45 is the middle of the original list for both item module and spell association module. i am aware of how the class module has a few slots where the game does use even though they are labeled unused.

    the actual end of the list doesn't start until 0x9A for item module and 0x7F for the spell association module.

    my game doesn't start acting up until 0x84 in the spell association. i can make as many custom weapons as i want, it's just when I use the spell association to assign spell animations that my game starts freaking out on me.

    and by the ending value, do you have any idea what it could be? i never heard of such a thing regarding the end of lists.

    any idea what else I can check to fix this problem?

  12. So I ran into a little problem I never seen encountered before.

    I was making and editing custom weapons in nightmare and this happened:

    The dreadful screech of death. Well I narrowed it down to the nightmare spell association module, at least I think that's what it is but I'm not sure. Is this due to a limited amount of custom weapons?

    I went back and forth betweens backups and found that this only happens after I pass a certain number of edited/custom weapons in the spell association module. As in, telling the ROM which weapon uses which spell animation, I can only make 6 of these before the game shows me that screen.

    Things I did do:

    The item and spell association modules are expanded.

    The corresponding notepad nightmare lists are as well.

    I did check if I overwritten anything and I did not.

    Does anyone know why this would happen?

  13. I haven't uploaded any LPs yet but I've been using LoiLo for the last few months and found it quite useful. LoiLo is also free.

    I haven't tested audio, as in recording audio from a microphone while recording games, movies, etc. Might have to use a separate program like audacity for microphone audio if that's the case.

    It's window based (computer window, not OS) recording software. This means you can record yourself doing any number of things and not limited to gaming.

    You could do a photoshop timelapse, video of yourself broswing the web or even a video of yourself typing in microsoft words if you felt like it.

    Only downside is that I don't think it records in small formats. It only records in AVI which is basically uncompressed and huge, but good for quality if you want quality.

    Generally, this shouldn't be a problem unless you have a really small HDD. If it does record in formats other than AVI, I haven't found it, so let me know if you locate it.

    The general interface is pretty intuitive in my opinion.

    Also comes with a basic editing software if you don't have things like premiere or after effects.

  14. Does anyone know if ambient noises exist for FE7? Things like crickets chirping or the wind howling. I have heard it in some Let's Plays and in normal vanilla FE7, but I can't find the byte codes in the music/song list. Unless they're being mis-labeled?

    Is this an actual thing or have I just been dreaming it up? Could anyone point me to where I can find ambient noises if they don't exist?

  15. Did you bring your edited ROM and .bak, nightmare, and save files to another computer and opened them there? If so, that would be the problem, I'm not sure why it happens but I think it has something to do with the compatibility of the saved files with different nightmares/EA/nups/etc.

    You just have to delete the saved files as in, for example, in Nightmare you can link certain modules to your ROM. You just have to delete or not place the saved files, minus your ROM save of course, in the same folder as the ROM when opening your selected program and they should open correctly.

    I got the same error and it frustrated me for several days in the past. But If this isn't the problem you are having then disregard everything I said, hahah.

  16. Has anyone encountered a black screen after their preparation screen in their ROM hacks?

    In my ROM hack, after the preparation screen is done with(I press start/enter to start the fight), a black screen appears and does not go away. Music is still playing and I can move my cursor around and everything but the display stays black until I either open up a menu like the character stat screen or option menu. Upon exiting whatever menu I open the black screen is gone and I have no idea why this is happening.

    Does anyone know why this is happening and how to get rid of it?

    I do have OOBB in my opening events. And I'm using ENDA at the end of the event, is this correct? I tried both ENDA and ENDB but there is no difference.

    Is it also true that I don't need a Turn event on turn 1 for the opening events if I have preparation screen set to yes in nightmare? Could this be why that black screen is happening?
